During this time, he successfully argued on behalf of the U.S. government, in a high-profile case, that there was "no political repression" in Haiti under President Jean-Claude Duvalier, aka "Baby Doc".

In 1983, Giuliani was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. It was in that position that he first gained national prominence by prosecuting numerous high-profile cases, including indictments of Wall Street figures Ivan Boesky and Michael Milken for insider trading. Giuliani attracted some criticism for arranging very public arrests of people, then dropping charges for lack of evidence instead of going to trial. He also spearheaded the effort to jail drug dealers, fight organized crime, break the web of corruption in government, and prosecute white-collar criminals. He amassed a record of 4,152 convictions with only 25 reversals. Senator Alphonse D'Amato who had been an long-time ally of Giuliani broke with him because of his prosecution of D'Amato contributor Milken.

It was in 1983 that Giuliani prosecuted Marc Rich on charges of tax evasion and illegally making oil deals with Iran during the hostage crisis. Rich fled the United States for Switzerland to avoid charges and was pardoned by President Bill Clinton in 2001.

Certainly not everyone, but the vast majority of Americans do.

Again, all they have to hit him with on any relevant front is his use and misuse of the NYPD to clean up crime and his wanting to cut off funding for an art exhbit most do not want funded. Middle America will add that to his 9/11 hero status. I am not saying they are correct. I am just saying that will be the overall perception by many if not most.

I am not in favor of the gut by any means. I just think he is the most preferable R if we have to have an R.

Again, I am not saying he deserves that (though his actions were exemplary on 9/11) - I am just saying people look at him that way.

I agree. I bet they will run him, especially if Hillary is the nominee. He and McCain are the only Republicans with the name recognition that she has. And besides, they have paraded him out in the past when they need a boost.
