Actually, I haven't listened to either disc of the Chicago album in a good long while, but I'll make it the soundtrack to my day and get back to you!

Most of that album, though, is the band jamming in the studio with a bunch of great old Chicago blues musicians. So if you want to stick to pure, unadulterated Fleetwood Mac at first, get those Boston albums (and before anyone else chimes in, yes, I know, there are one or two jam tracks with other musicians on stage).

All right, I've been listening to Blues Jam in Chicago all day, and it's really a fabulous set, but a lot of the focus is on the "guest stars," and it's strictly a blues album. There's a lot of great emotion, a lot of fabulous playing, and lots of beautiful subtleties, but I don't know if it's the best introduction to the early incarnation of the band. I'd stick with the Boston Tea Party CDs, which include a mix of both great blues songs and the band's more rock-oriented material (Oh Well, Black Magic Woman, Green Manalishi, etc.).

Or! According to Mr. Stew on the pre-Rumours forum, Sanctuary is releasing a three-CD set in November that looks like it will be the perfect introduction to the early years of Fleetwood Mac. One CD for R&B and the blues, one CD for "experimental" studio work, and one CD for live stuff. SOunds like the perfect starter kit to me.

I play everything they ever brought out regularly. Except for Tango In The Night, Time and Behind the mask.

I started collecting Pre-Rumour Mac albums when I bought the Chain box set. I fell in love with Why, Hypnotized and Man Of The World. So I went out that day and bought a lot of Mac albums and through the years I have bought more.

Time actually isn't that bad. I think Christine's songs are really good. I also actually like Bekka's Nothing Without You and Winds Of Change. Not a big fan of Billy or Rick though.

I do think that Bekka should have done more of her own songs on the Fleetwood Mac tour instead of ruining Stevie and Christine's songs IMO.

Time is such a pleasant album to listen to because you have Richard Dashut's expertise shining through on virtually every track. When you get a guy who knows what the fack he's doing in the mix booth, the sky's the limit.

Bekka has a particular vocal style -- balls to the wall -- that you either like or don't. In my case, I don't generally love this sort of extravagantly modulated vocal presentation, this kind of R&B howling & grinding ... it winds up striking me as phony hyperextension, the equivalent of a tawdry, slam-bang Michael Mann movie, jacking up the kinesis. (look at the lady in my banner. She's the polar opposite of this)

but the guys sure put together an interesting arrangement for Gold Dust Woman. It wasn't even all that complex, but it was fresh & it had dramatic arc & suspense.

They wouldn't get past John Williams or Danny Elfman, David, why bother?

Oh my, yes. And god bless her for it.

The "balls to the wall" style seems to infect a lot of singers who, technically, have very good voices and lots of range. It's almost as if they feel compelled to sing this way because they can. It's virtuosity run amok.

And of course everybody recognizes that somebody like Billie did not, technically, have a very good voice - but boy did she know how to use what she had. No matter how loud or high you can go, you either got that kind of soul, or you don't.

Though, to be fair to Bekka, she IS the daughter of Bonnie Bramlett, so there's a bit of a family tradition there with the balls-to-the-wall vocal style.

Yes, yes ... family tradition ... nice, nice ...

If it were her family's tradition to scream like Rhesus monkeys, I don't think I'd like that, either.

It's not only when she is singing her own stuff. Have you ever seen her sing back up for Faith Hill? OMG! Those facial expressions and grunts are scary.

No scarier than a certain singer towards the end of a certain song about a Welch witch in the 1970s
