What irks Steve is the myopia some Fleetwood Mac fans have: the ones who a priori assume that Fleetwood Mac albums without Stevie Buckingham or Lindsey Nicks -- or even Peter Green -- can't possibly be any good or of any use to anyone. He deplores the fans who blithely & arrogantly say that Fleetwood Mac came into being only in 1975, & that its artistic stature was a function only of its commercial windfall in the United States -- thus eliminating any artistic achievements from incarnations earlier than 1975 or later than 1987.

I don't usually speak for Steve, but I've discussed this with him so thoroughly that I feel I know where he stands.

Which Egan tracks were they on? I know Mick contributed to "Star in the Dust" and "Make it Alone" on Not Shy but I don't recall John being on anything and I certainly don't hear anything distinctive about the drumming on those two tracks.

Edit: I just looked over my collection and, without exception, John Selk is credited with performing the bass guitar on every song on every Walter Egan solo album until 1999's Walternative, at which point Walter started playing the instrument himself.

As far as I know, John never appeared on a W.E. album. Oh, the first time I heard "Star In The Dust", I could tell it was Mick, even before I read the liner notes...but I do agree wholeheartedly about "Make It Alone".

You're correct (see my edit above). John Selk played the bass guitar on all Egan solo albums until 1999. In fact, of the Rumours-era lineup, John McVie is the only one who didn't appear on at least one Walter Egan record.

It's all in how Mick used to play...his "off" beats, his not-quite-finishing-a-roll fills, the overall timbre of the drums themselves...how he tunes, or actually USED to tune his drums. "Star In The Dust", to me anyway, just SCREAMS "Mick Fleetwood on drums" ...too bad he doesn't play that way anymore.

I'll take your word for it. Although I would most definitely notice if the drums were absent from a song, I've never really paid any attention to them or the different styles of playing/tuning them. I'm also not a musician, so I suppose that affects how I listen to a song as well.
