I don't agree with what he has to say about Born In The USA at all.
I don't even own that album, I think it's too 80s and too commercial, but I think plenty of Springsteen's lyrics are about "rebellion and desperation". I also think Born In The USA's genius is that it sounds so pro-American, and yet at heart is this total criticism of America. A right-wing dude can sing along without realising he's singing these really left-wing lyrics. How fantastic is that? That's pure rebellion if you ask me! I think Bruce knew EXACTLY what he was doing there.

Tom Petty, hands down.
I never got the appeal of Springsteen. His voice is good, but not great or unique. His lyrics are good, but I never found the music of his songs to be catchy or even especially memorable. Petty, on the other hand, was probably the one artist that really turned me on and got me interested in music in general. I've been a fan since I was eight years old and the first album I owned by any artist was Full Moon Fever. He's consistently great and has yet to release an album that fell short of that. He also has a deep respect for his fans and for the integrity of his music and has demonstrated both numerous times. |

I guess I like Sprigsteen mroe because Petty reminds me of Dylan with that nasal voice thing. I can only take so much of that.

I'm posting too late to count, but I just wanted to comment on these two artists.
I love them both so much. A little while ago, on imdb, someone in the music forum put them up against each other and Bruce won majorly, but I couldn't decide at the time. Now it would be Bruce. I never understood his music or appeal until I started getting his albums and really listening to his words and the way he sang them. He's absolutely amazing. I haven't had the opportunity to see him live, but I have seen some shows on DVD and they are mindblowing. I think Darkness On the Edge of Town,Nebraska, The Rising, and his new one are brilliant. Especially The Rising. It's become a major favorite album of mine. I really think his music is amazing and incredibly diverse, although a lot of people seem to typecast him unfairly. Now Tom...awesome, awesome, awesome. Amazing artist. I love him and honestly haven't heard anything by him that I could say I dislike. Saw him in concert and he was INCREDIBLE. One of my most favorite concert experiences ever. I think his music can be so catchy, I love his lyrics, and sometimes he has those really gorgeous songs (like Square One off of Elizabethtown) that just blow you away. I really love him as an artist, but his songs probably move me just a *tad* less than Bruce's- and that's kind of what qualifies a preference for me, when choosing between artists. But really they both kick ass. I'm a big fan of each. |
