Especially because it's not superficial and fluffy at all, IMO.

Whoever said it was influenced by old school bluegrass and Americana was spot on. To my ears that's neither quirky or experimental. As I said before it reminds me a little of 60's folk singer Nick Drake.

I would kill for an entire album like this. You guys can keep the shiny, overproduced pop. I like the raw Lindsey more.

As for the lyrics, I don't care who or what it's about, it just sounds good.
The experimental part is the syncopic aproach in songwriting. Vocal melodylines and the melody in the pickinglines are drifting from eachother. (the reason Johnny Stew don't like it so much and the reason why I think it's a masterpiece.) Nick Drake was a master at that, too, so I think you're spot on with that comparison. It makes it so undigestible for the listener that wants to be catched by popstructure. The big difference with his work on GOS and SYW is the production that you call lo-fi. The picking sounds so much more warm. I really hear the strings resonate, something I totally missed in Say Goodbye (studio). That picking was syncopic, too but had it's effect mainly in the dazzling pace. Here it has so much more emotion in itself. Then the overly vulnerable and "naked" vocals strike me more then he has ever done. It really is a step further in his development as a songwriter. And he's going my way: To the core of the emotion, raw and direct. Like he did vocally during Never going back again-live and Say Goodbye-live. If he makes an album full of this sort of directness, I'll be the happiest man on earth. H*ll, I'd even pay for Johnny Stews copy.

PS. I repeat: For me this is his Save Me A Place part 2. But 25 years later: I'll always provide a place for me in you. (don't read this sexual please I'm dutch and searching for words ) His singing is so strong imo, because it reminds me of the way you try to sing for a child that's almost asleep: whispering doesn't work, you'll have to give SOME voice to keep melody. So is the guitarwork: it goes round like a small tin musicbox.

Me, too, but I don't mind.
for instance, you'll usually say "oy" and "fetch". Just for starters.
Also you will say "that's about as likely as me (insert something outlandish)."
When you're at the Ledge long enough, you'll discover EVERYONE'S predictable. I'll post something, and I already have a good guess as to what the replies will be and who they will be from. Very rarely am I surprised.... although it does happen sometimes. I imagine the content of my posts and replies surprise few people, too, although I try!

So what I really meant to say is, "nice song, but it's no 'Red Rover'".

It appeared to me to be sort of a superficial, fluff type film. I cannot imagine that Lindsey would want to even sit through a film like this. He has limited outlets for his songs, with the solo thing not appearing to pan out and FM not recording often. I doubt he would waste this opportunity to get one of his songs out by sitting down and handcrafting a song to fit the film. It might have been something he wrote during that "burst of inspiration" he had during the SYW tour.
Don't you think that this song could be applied to the relationship between parent and child?

Oh you and I
We sure can dream
Of conversations
That might have been
I know that I
Treated you unkind

Then long ago
I lost my mind
And even after
All these years
Oh I can even
See you clear

A child was born
Another dies
And every life
Has it’s price

No I won’t shut us down
No I will stay around
As long as I can

That's what I thought when I first heard it, not about his 30 year old "relationship," or whatever it's being called, with Stevie.

Hmm, good analysis. I hadn't thought of the guitarwork like a musicbox, but I love the way it sounds like he's playing it in front of you, just for you.

Why are so many people saying "another time"? I clearly hear "another dies" as someone else did earlier. It is a common poetic device to express the passage of time through the cycle of life and death. The addition of "every life has its price" is far more intriguing. I'm still giving some thought to the interpretation I will put on my site, and I love that this song does make you think. Yay Lindsey!

It is "another dies," but I just copied and pasted the lyrics that someone transcribed.

That comes from my first attempt of transcribing the lyrics. I think Christy's version is better though, "another dies".

Sorry - wasn't trying to point the finger! I know I have been ridiculously off-base in hearing lyrics, much worse than this. You should have seen what I had down for Red Rover before the lyrics were given to us in SYW. It was embarrassing.

?? Oh, I didn't feel attacked or something, that's alright. Maybe we should do a new post with the correct lyrics. Although, there's more differences between our versions. I'm not really sure which is right!

It can. Period. Esp. if you read it like a heartfelt lullaby: he sings it that way, too.

In another way..it could also apply to him speaking about/to kristen, could it not? I think maybe he'd get a kick out of reading our interps, he's always said his songs are open to much thought.

I like it. The guitar work is special, especially the solo. And his vocals are strange but interesting. It's like he's singing in his bedroom trying not to wake up his mum. It's really pretty and honest. I like Lindsey's music stripped down like this.
