Just noticed this on rockontv.com - they show it airing on Sept. 28th at 9 PM/8 PM central, but check your local listings, you know how effed up PBS programming can be.

Get Up, Stand Up: The Story of Pop and Protest
Coming on the heels of this summer's worldwide Live 8 concert event, GET UP, STAND UP serves as a timely reminder of the potent role music has played in a century's worth of political protest. The film traces the birth of protest songs to the American union movement and explores the impact of pop culture in politicizing the baby boomer generation during the Vietnam era. As rock critic Charles Shaar Murray says in the program: "Suddenly, politics became something which, as a thinking pop fan, you were supposed to know about." The music in GET UP, STAND UP is omnipresent, moving seamlessly from "The Times They Are A-Changin' " to "Power to the People." By weaving historical footage and commentary from today's musicians and music critics, the program puts the power of pop into perspective. From the 1970s on, American musicians began taking on larger and larger issues in countries as diverse and far-flung as Bangladesh and Tibet. Benefit concerts and individual hit songs, including Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas" and USA for Africa's "We Are the World," raised millions while capturing the attention of billions worldwide.
Ultimately, GET UP, STAND UP is an investigation and a celebration, a reminder that pop can be so much more than simply "popular" music. Using songs as punctuation, the film chronicles the way music has been used throughout this century to convey social dissatisfaction, from labor unrest to terrorist attacks.

I'm guessing they'll mention the Clinton campaign and "Don't Stop?" Or the phenomenon of Rumours??

Thank you! I love those kinds of shows. Also, I marked my calendar for Sept. 26th, because that is when that Bob Dylan thing that Martin Scorcese made debuts. I can't wait to see that, either.

Sept. is a good month on PBS!!!

Did you see American Dad? there was a comment (it was by a worm, or something weird) like - "I've never been above ground, know nothing of the world around me whatsoever, can identify nothing, but even I think Six Feet Under is pretentious.."

I haven't really seen it, by the way. When I had cable, I tried to watch it, but it was too boring and gray for me, and the people didn't seem attractive.

Amazon has some decent clips from the Dylan doc on their site.

That's all I can think of. Lindsey did write some songs that were IMO, overtly political for Say You Will.

Only the best incarnation of the band, IMO. MTM, FG, and BT are my favorite FM albums.
Bob's the most down to earth artist I've ever seen. And I was making jokes with Bob Welch yesterday. How muthaf*cking cool is that?

Bob's totally cool. I get very angry that they gloss over his participation in the Mac whenever there's some type of interview or documentary. Did the Mac ever have a protest song or a song that made some type of social commentary? Hell yes they did. From "Future Games" to "Bermuda Triangle," Bob's tenure was filled with such songs. I think SYW is really the only album since Bob's tenure that really had that.

The first epsiode was quite good, discussing Joe Hill and the roots of protest singing. After that, I quickly lost interest.

It seemed to be a German production. This meant an episode would start off taslking about Dylan for example, then have this large section in the middle about German 60s underground rock groups and then have this bit of a summary about Dylan at the end. I found a lot of the European stuff a bit boring (people outside Aus would probably say this about Aus bands) - and often not all that related to protest music.

Yer I was about to say that this was I think four part documentary it was shown here earlier in the year.

I did watch bits of it but don't ever recall seeing Fleetwood Mac on there?
