Honey, I sat in a meeting tonight with a woman who was a nurse, a labor and delivery nurse and she was yapping away about "Why didn't they just leave?" If it wasn't business, I would have told her off but instead I just went into calm voice and tried to explain why they didn't just leave. She was from Colorado Springs, home of Dobson, et al, so I shouldn't be too surpirsed.

While federal and state emergency planners scramble to get more military relief to Gulf Coast communities stricken by Hurricane Katrina, a massive naval goodwill station has been cruising offshore, underused and waiting for a larger role in the effort.

The USS Bataan, a 844-foot ship designed to dispatch Marines in amphibious assaults, has helicopters, doctors, hospital beds, food and water. It also can make its own water, up to 100,000 gallons a day. And it just happened to be in the Gulf of Mexico when Katrina came roaring ashore.

The Bataan rode out the storm and then followed it toward shore, awaiting relief orders. Helicopter pilots flying from its deck were some of the first to begin plucking stranded New Orleans residents.

But now the Bataan's hospital facilities, including six operating rooms and beds for 600 patients, are empty. A good share of its 1,200 sailors could also go ashore to help with the relief effort, but they haven't been asked. The Bataan has been in the stricken region the longest of any military unit, but federal authorities have yet to fully utilize the ship.

You're right. We've got to figure out a way to make this country whole again.

You're a strong person, because I don't know what I would have told that woman.

Even if every person there was someone who actually refused to leave (that is absurd and of course I don't believe it in the least) I still can't understand why someone would be yapping about it. Who cares, lady? You think they should be left there because of that? Is that what you're getting at?

Yeah, Chris, I don't know how you were able to take that.

This is quite apropos:

A little piece of you
The little peace in me
Will die
For this is not America

Blossom falls to bloom
This season
Promise not to stare
Too long
For this is not a miracle

There was a time
A storm that blew so pure
For this could be the biggest sky
And I could have
The faintest idea

Snowman melting
From the inside
Falcon spirals
to the ground
So bloody red
Tomorrows clouds

A little piece of you
The little piece in me
Will die
For this is not America

There was a time
A wind that blew so young
For this could be the biggest sky
And I could have the faintest idea

This could be the biggest sky
This could be a miracle
This could be etc

They're talking about mass graves Suze. If they do that, we will never know the true death count.

From what I've heard, they're still in there (the freezer isn't working, obviously) and there are between 30-40.
