Texas Makes Plans To House More People
POSTED: 10:47 am CDT September 1, 2005 UPDATED: 3:16 pm CDT September 1, 2005 AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas has agreed to take in an additional 25,000 Hurricane Katrina refugees from Louisiana and house them in San Antonio. That's the announcement Thursday from Texas Gov. Rick Perry's office. Perry spokesman Robert Black said Louisiana asked Texas to provide shelter for more evacuees. He said Perry has spoken with the mayor and county judge in San Antonio to begin making the plans. Black said no site's been selected for housing the refugees and no timetable's been determined for moving them. He said more details were expected later in the day. The refugees are in addition to about 25,000 already being moved into the Houston Astrodome. Most of those people are coming from the Superdome in New Orleans. www.wdsu.com |

Ken - this is an answer to our questions earlier:
Congress To Reconvene; Big Easy Slips Toward Anarchy FEMA Suspends Some Rescue Operations Amid Violence UPDATED: 3:00 pm CDT September 1, 2005 Congress will reconvene from its summer recess Thursday evening or Friday to pass emergency legislation for victims of Hurricane Katrina, a Senate Republican aide said Thursday. The Bush administration will seek $10 billion as the first installment to cover immediate costs for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a congressional official said. President George W. Bush will tour the hurricane-devastated Gulf Coast region on Friday and has asked his father, former President George H.W. Bush, and former President Bill Clinton to lead a private fundraising campaign for victims. "This is an agonizing time for the people of the Gulf Coast," President Bush said and urged patience, saying relief is on the way. Meanwhile, with images of looting and reports of gunfire frightening evacuees and rescuers alike in New Orleans, the government said it is sending enough National Guardsmen to keep the peace. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said there have been only "isolated incidents of criminality" in New Orleans. There are 2,800 Guardsmen in the city right now, and each day another 1,400 will be added -- quadrupling the size of the city's police force by the weekend, he said. The government is confident that it can keep the peace while finishing the city's evacuation, Chertoff said. The rest of the government's response is moving full ahead, with massive quantities of food, water, blankets and cots being moved in, Chertoff said. But he added there is "no way to minimize this," saying the situation on the ground remains very dangerous and will require many months and a lot of willpower to overcome. Earlier, FEMA announced that it has had to suspend rescue operations in some areas after gunfire broke out. There was also a report of a shot being fired at a military helicopter near the Superdome, where fights and trash fires have broken out. Evacuations from the Superdome to Houston have begun, but thousands more people are desperately trying to get out. Heavily armed state troopers had to block a surging crowd that moved toward buses near the Superdome. Angry refugees hoping to escape the stifling confines of the dome are packed shoulder-to-shoulder up to the barricades where heavily armed National Guardsmen stand. Medical operations at the dome have been disrupted. One doctor said he will evacuate his team as fast as he can. An Air National Guard nurse who worked all night in the dome's special needs medical facility saw the scene outside and said she "wouldn't go out in that crowd for anything." Meanwhile, outside the New Orleans Convention Center, survivors grew more frustrated with the lack of help. "No one has thought enough of us to even bring us a cup of water," one man said. Daniel Edwards said many people have gone days without food or water. Tens of thousands of people are stranded on the streets, with no sign of emergency workers, Several bodies lie scattered around. Edwards pointed to an elderly lady dead in a wheelchair and said, "I don't treat my dog like that." He said he buried his dog. "You can go overseas with the military but you can't get them down here," Edwards asked. The Rev. Isaac Clark said he and others were evacuated to the convetion hall bus bus and were dropped off with nothing. "We are out here like pure animals," Clark said. Earlier, the first busloads of Hurricane Katrina refugees pulled up to the Houston Astrodome. Air conditioning, cots, food and showers await the thousands of storm survivors who have endured three days of putrid squalor at the Superdome. The Astrodome, 350 miles away, was quickly converted into a sort of giant Red Cross shelter to accommodate them. Separately, two school buses loaded with refugees arrived at the Astrodome overnight. They are not being allowed to stay, but are being given food and water. One of the problems to be worked out is showering arrangements for 25,000 people in locker rooms designed for sports teams. A lot of the people leaving the Superdome Wednesday night said they had no idea where they were headed. "They tell us to line up and go, and we just line up and go," one man said. The exodus of hurricane refugees from the Superdome to the Astrodome is expected to continue through the day. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has chartered about 500 buses for the 350-mile move. More than 20,000 people had sought shelter there, but with no air conditioning and little electricity, the heat and stench have been unbearable. "I don't care where they're taking us. Anywhere is better than here," one evacuee said. The death toll from Katrina is not known. The official toll in Mississippi is up to 121. Refrigerated mobile morgues are cruising around Mississippi coastal areas like garbage trucks, picking up bodies left on sidewalks and in front yards. The mayor of New Orleans said his city's casualty figure was in the hundreds -- maybe thousands. Some Looters Say They're Taking Only Essentials Desperation continues mixing with random lawlessness inside some New Orleans stores. The looting goes on, even after the city pulled some police officers off relief duty and ordered them to go after people who are ransacking shelves. One woman was sobbing uncontrollably as she loaded children's clothing and snack food into bags to take to her kids in a shelter. Another man approached a reporter with an armful of toothpaste and deodorant and said he was only taking personal hygiene products, and not anything he could "get drunk or high with." A woman on a bike played it safe -- riding up to a drug store and asking others if any arrests were being made. When she was told no, she said she was a diabetic and needed to find test strips. Residents Nationwide Open Homes To Refugees People across the country are reaching out to victims of Hurricane Katrina. Some are even opening their homes to refugees. A woman in Georgia said she has space and people need it. So she's offering a spare bedroom as temporary shelter. An Arizona woman said not only does she have room for refugees, but she can also put up some of their pets. "Even if it's 110 degrees, I'm sitting here on dry land," she said. These people and others are using the Web site craigslist.org to get the word out. Unfortunately, many victims don't have access to computers right now. But federal officials still applaud their efforts. "There are a lot of great Americans out there," a spokesman with the Federal Emergency Management Agency said. Developments Major developments in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina: Lootings, carjacking and other violence spread in the Gulf Coast region, and the military says it expects to increase National Guard deployment to 30,000 from around the country to help with security, rescue and relief. www.wdsu.com |

If they are on Greyhounds that can hold 47 per bus, that is 23,500 per trip with 500 buses. Assuming they have more than one driver, they can evacuate 47,000 in one day with two trips, which is enough to evacuate the city (around 100,000) before the end of tommorow, which is a good thing.
_____________________________________________________________ Police Try To Control Angry Superdome Crowd Stranded People Wait For More Buses POSTED: 2:52 pm CDT September 1, 2005 UPDATED: 3:18 pm CDT September 1, 2005 NEW ORLEANS -- The last of the 100 buses that arrived at the Superdome Thursday morning has been filled and pulled out. Now, people in long lines waiting to be taken to the Houston Astrodome are sitting down, as they await their next chance to get away from the hot, smelly Superdome. Heavily armed police are standing by to keep order among exhausted and angry refugees. At one point, a crowd broke through a line of National Guard troops and rushed the glass doors into the adjoining Hyatt Regency complex. However, they were stopped by 19 armed state policemen wearing bulletproof vests. Trooper K.W. Miller told a reporter to move to the back of the crowd, adding that the situation "is getting worse and worse." Last edited by strandinthewind; 09-01-2005 at 03:39 PM.. |
