Gunmen target medical convoy
New Orleans mayor issues 'desperate SOS'

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- New Orleans' Charity Hospital halted efforts to evacuate its patients after it came under sniper fire, according to Dr. Tyler Curiel, who witnessed the incidents.

The attack came as New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin issued "a desperate SOS" for the thousands of people stranded in an around the city's convention center with no food or water and fading hope.

Curiel and his National Guard escorts, were returning to the hospital after dropping off patients at nearby Tulane Medical Center, when someone started shooting at their convoy of Humvees.

"We were coming in from a parking deck at Tulane Medical Center, and a guy in a white shirt started firing at us," Curiel said. "The National Guard (troops), wearing flak jackets, tried to get a bead on this guy. "

The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. (12:30 p.m. ET). About an hour later, another gunman opened fire at the back of Charity Hospital.

"We got back to Charity Hospital with with food from Tulane and we said, 'OK the snipers are behind us, let's move on,'" Curiel said. "We started loading patients (for transport) and 20 minutes later, shots rang out."

The National Guard soldiers told staff to get away from the windows, and evacuations were halted.

Charity Hospital has no electricity, no water and the only food available is couple of cans of vegetables and graham crackers.

Evacuations by boat were halted after armed looters threatened medics, and overturned one of their boats.

The sniper attacks were the latest incidents of violence that have disrupted efforts to help people in the flooded city.

This is horrifying. The help is there but they can't help. What is the motive for shooting at rescuers? We need to get as many police officers in there too as we can get from whatever towns/cities can spare them. I cannot believe this. It is pure evil. There are babies in that hospital. And lots of other helpless people. I'm now beyond sickened.

Why? That was the ONLY thing to to do...

Waiting 4 days only made for more deaths...

As far as that goes the President is too. I do not follow Gov. Rick Perry. Under his watch, our schools rating and childrens test scores have plummeted. I am not sure at what time the leg will meet again?

Oh no. You're not going to pull me into that muck. He has to go at some point. The real point is that as I stated earlier, they f*cked this up royally.

I think the presence of 41 & 42 are going to bring hope, not 43.

People from Texas responded immediately. The people that took the stranded at the Superdome did not even know that over 4500 people right here in Beaumont were already here, had been here, taken care of. The Church in Groves has 1400 evacuees housed there. There are folks from here that took privates boats down, but due to the terrain, or lack thereof, could not use their boats. And I would go out on a limb to say that many other states have too.

That's how Jason operates, you've known him long enough to know that. He likes to try and back you into a corner so that he can disregard anything you say by saying you're spinning. That's his modus operandi.

That started with his predecessor. Bush was a horrible governor.

What does the governor have to do with test scores in elementary schools?

I took those silly educationist tests in elementary school -- I must have taken a hundred or more in my six years at Baldwin Stocker. I know I went through hundreds of #2 pencils. I scored super well on just about all of them, as I recall. What did that have to do with the governor at the time? I don't even remember who the governor was at the time!

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one....no changing my mind. I'm a lifelong Texan, born and raised.
