Peter was in town to cover the Quebec referendum - and was broadcasting from our station. Well, I was in awe, and sort of stood back and just listened to him talking to his team, and stayed out of his way. But at one point in the day, he came over to me and started to talk to me about Quebec politics. He wanted to know my take on it. A naive little 25-year-old. But that was what made him a great journalist. He didn't purport to know it all. He knew the importance of talking to people about their experiences. He was charming and so humble - didn't take himself too seriously. He gave me his contact numbers - told me to call him if I was ever in New York and wanted to visit ABC News. I regret now that I never had that chance. Anyway - I have carried that experience with me throughout my own TV news career. He's been an inspiration. He was in a class all his own. His death is a huge loss.

Great story Cat.

Alright I just read through all 8 pages of this thread and I'm having really mixed emotions. On one hand I definitely saw the self-indulgent side of her with bringing up 9-11 and the whole masterpiece thing, etc. but it's not the first time I've heard her speak of this so I wasn't taken back. In the Jim Ladd interview before Vegas I remember her talking about 9-11 and about how it happened during the tour and I almost felt as if she was saying 9-11 got in the way of her masterpiece and that the album would have done a lot better if it hadn't gotten lost in the drama of 9-11. That was a tad bit disturbing.

I also don't think it's necessary for us to sit here and judge Stevie on her letter. If there's one thing I've learned from living in Los Angeles it's that celebrities live in a completely different reality than we do. As many people have said they are pampered and catered too and the world revolves around them and Stevie is no exception. She has no children, no husband, so in reality the only person she really has to focus on is herself. She has lived this way for 30 years and it's really all she knows so who can blame her. I think we need to look at the larger picture and at her intent in writing the letter. She has a huge heart and she didn't have to write the letter.

P.S. who cares if she smokes occasionally and still tells people to stop smoking. Damn she's not God people! I can't imagine being a celebrity and having to live up to everyone's expectations. Thank the good Lord she doesn't read this board.

By page three of this thread I was exhausted. I have no powerful feelings for Peter Jennings either way. It is certainly a loss that he is gone. I feel for his family, having experienced many losses myself ( I won't insert any poetry here...don't want to be self indulgent or anything).

It goes without saying that I am critical of Stevie whenever I think she is below par or doing something silly. I bash her work when I think it sucks.

Of course she is self absorbed. Anyone surprised by this ? She's a friggin performer. I find her note writing style unsophisticated and at about a junior high school level. BUT, I do not find her disingenuous. She wrote this guy a letter because she felt for him and wanted to reach out. I think she put it out there after he was gone to maybe help one person to quit smoking and not die a painful death from lung cancer.

Anyone else write a letter to a famous stranger lately when they were going thorugh a crisis ? Do something nice for someone you'd never met, just because you could ?

I am a misanthrope and a grouch, but man... I can give the woman some credit for being nice. No one held a gun to her head to write that letter. She did it because she wanted to help.

That line about not smoking does seem out of sync if she herself is still smoking cigs, pot, whatever. What I've wanted to ask here for a long time but haven't had the guts to, is this - do any of you think she's still into cocaine? Someone gave me a link to this "A-List Hollywood" site where it supposedly has the low-down on a lot of celebs and they had a clip on Stevie where they basically said she's still into it, although she's doing it a different way now. I don't believe everything I read, but this has been at the back of my mind eating at me for awhile now. She wouldn't look and sound as good as she does if she was doing it, right?

As for the letter, it was a nice gesture. Sure, it could've been worded a little better, but the thought behind it was what counts.

This is very true. I have been a smoker for the past 15 years. I have tried and tried to quit. This past Saturday I decided to quit for good. I am on my 3rd day without a ciggarete and it REALLY SUCKS but I know I can get through it this time. Today has been especially horrible so when I checked Nicksfix on my lunch break Stevie's Journal entry really touched me. The stop smoking part at the end really grabbed me because Im in the middle of this quitting thing. I know some you thought it was funny and thats ok. I just wanted to let you guys know that quitting smoking is really really hard and this really did help me out with my quit today.

I'm with you. Believe it or not I never smoked until I was 26 and now I've been smoking for 2 years. I don't smoke a lot (2 ciggs a day on average) and when I drink but I still think it's terribly unhealthy. I've been thinking of quitting and the whole Peter Jennings thing really inspired me to make more of an effort to quit. I'm not saying I'm going to stop smoking because I read what Stevie said but it sure is some extra incentive.

I think that's total BS but then again anything is possible. I don't think she'd be able to stand up if she was doing coke today. I'm sure she still wants to but I highly doubt she's using at this point. Can you send a link to the site please?

after what she went through, i seriously doubt she'd go back to it. i was a user/abuser and had a hard enough time quitting after two years of minimum three or four lines/day. she used for years and put up an unfathomable amount of coke. if i ever touch it again, it will be the most shameful and disappointing moral failure i hope to never experience. i believe that sentiment is shared by most addicts in recovery. sorry it's off topic in this thread, but i had to say it. NO. a few butts here and there is really nothing in comparison. cutting a line is, even if you don't actually take it - just watching it happen is scary.

i smoked from ages 13-18... as soon as i turned 18, i quit and have never smoked since... at 19, i developed really bad bronchitus - so bad that i ended up in the hospital because of it.. when the doctors did an X-ray on my chest, they said that my lungs were black and looked like the lungs of a 55 year old man

lt's now been longer that i haven't smoked than the length of time i had smoked... i haven't checked to see if my lungs are now clear, but i hope to god they are...

i have dreams about smoking still to this very day.. but i will never ever do it... not worth it and i always tell everyone i know who does still smoke to quit, but they just don't seem to listen

Congrats on quitting! I wonder if my lungs are black? That would be really nasty .

I didn't really think she was still into it either, but when you read unsettling gossip, somehow it seems to worm its way into your mind a little.

Besides, she seems so strong and healthy nowadays that if coke was back in her life again, she couldn't do the things she's doing now. It's a shame how a little Hollyweird gossip can bug me like that.

I think the letter was a very kind gesture. Stevie lives in her own world, so she probably doesn't know how to write without talking about herself. It doesn't make it any less sincere. There is so much meanness out there; I get inspired when someone takes a moment to acknowledge another's pain.

But the ~'s really bug me.

When my grandfather died in 1994, I wrote letters to my favorite singers at that time. I poured out my heart to them, and their assistants wrote back to me. Amy Grant's people sent me a book relating to what I was going through and Michael W. Smith's people sent a sweet letter to comfort me. When I received that book, I started crying because it was such a nice gesture and they didn't have to do that. I had cried sooooo much and needed to vent out my frustration and grief. WHY would I write to them and not talk to my own family, well, because of their music, I connected with them. I've always connected with music, so I went that route, someone else may not, we're all different.
