I was chatting with someone a few nights ago and I think he cured me of my excessive smilie usage habit. It was tough and he was patient but I no longer feel the need to rely on them. I feel so free. It was like smilie rehab. One by one, I'm kicking my addictions. I will only use smilies in cases of dire emergencies, like when I feel someone is sure to be insulted if I don't. I look at my posts now and they look so clean. So pure. It's freeing for them, too. I hope I can stay clean with this one. It was a tough night for both of us.

I think I need to go through this smilie rehabilitation program

I feel as though I used them a great deal - in fact - when I'm writing e-mails and/or chatting on AIM or something - I feel lost and naked without them...

Like, Oh no - I'm being sarcastic - but how can I portray that without

Seriously - I'll be writing an e-mail to my sister and randomly I'll type And then think...wtf..she can't see an actual shruggin smilie in the e-mail...

I need help

me, too. But the way I think of it is, it would be like talking without making facial expressions, and I just can't do that. I mean, expressions are a must. Plus, I abhorr the snobbishness about using emoticons, so it's part defiance that I use them, too. But mostly it's that "talking without facial expressions" thing.
But, Sue - more power to you! You gotta do what's right for you.

How are emoticons snobbish?
I like using them just because I think they are fun and they can help convey what you are saying.

they're not, some people are snobby about people who use them. Like, if you use them, they will be snobby at you.
Oh, and I agree.

I'm with you. Emoticons were considered mandatory when I first got online. I got into trouble with my sarcasm in email cuz people would think I was serious. They are very important in certain instances. And, you're right, I don't speak deadpan why would I chat that way?

Very cool. I want an iPod. When I was your age it was cassette players. Discmans were just coming out maybe? But hella expensive. Anyway, I'm psyched for you, that gift rocks. And agreed, wiffle ball is super fun!

Yeah, I got a Sony Walkman for my 17th birthday. It was the height of greatness.

Is it? Want to hear more about it? I just like using them, is all. Then I noticed, that some people think it's stupid, which I think is stupid. That's about all. Oh, and I think everyone should have smiley freedom without someone making fun of them.

someone talking in real life, or writing on here, isn't writing a great novel, or even a crappy one. They are just talking. But you are right, no novel requires smileys.

yeah, I said that, I just like to use them. I only found out later that some didn't like them.
