One of my cats is actually named Patsy
I considered renaming my first cat Neelix Edina, but I got so used to the name.. (not her, she mainly reacts to "want a treat?" in Dutch) (And Patsy mainly reacts to "Neelix!" )

I think getting a shelter dog is a great thing. The sad thing is as you noted, the shelter dogs tend to get sick more often or at least faster than a pure bred dog tends to. Though I think in its own way the procedure is a little cruel, I wish people would spay or neuter all animals they are not going to breed. That way, the amount of unwanted animals would be greatly reduced and people could try and breed a great number of diseases out of bloodlines.

I was nervous about getting a shelter dog - and initially she did have some health issues - more nervous issues actually - she was such a wreck - had been abandoned etc....

She's happy as a clam now and well adjusted - or so it seems, at least she's stopped chewing her own fur off.

I have had her checked out by the vet and all is good thus far - which is great considering the shelter said she was 9! She does not act like a 9 year old dog though....

And last night I discovered that my dog can eat from a fork like a person - well as long as I hold the fork

I am glad she is better. It just amazes me how people can be so mean to a pet as to abandon them.

ITA. People are so very ignorant about pets, particularly dogs. They figure "hey, let's get a dog" without researching anything. Puppies especially - hello, you have to TRAIN a puppy constantly, it's not just going to act the way you want it to by itself.

We used rescue with Bubba & it worked great. There are numerous certified rescues across the country for many breeds & they do full medical checks, immunization updates, spay/neuter if not done already, behavior evaluations, etc. That way you know what you're getting into from the start, plus most of the dogs are purebred.

I got my dog from a shelter. She's sooooo good too, we've never had any problems with her. Her name is Summer. She's hilarious too, she thinks she's a lap dog, even though she's about 50 lbs. And she does the whole 'sleeping like a human' thing too, it's great.

Amen - I work with the Scottie Rescue here, which, like most rescues, handles more than just Scotties if the need arises. In fact, one of my fav. moments at the Scottie Specialty dog show this year was the Rescue Parade. Some of those poor dogs had been beaten and abused so badly that death would seemingly have been a blessing. Many were still a little bald from where they had been burned, insects were allowed to eat them away, or they chewed off their own skin due - - all due to neglect or just plain cruelty. When you see the boards with pics at the shows, you just break down and cry. But, there are happy endings as witnessed here http://clubs.akc.org/stca/highlight.htm

It is heartbreaking to me that people would be so cruel to animals. It's just gross.

I can't even imagine how someone abandoned my Clancy. She's such an amazing dog and has brought SO much joy into my life - I guess it was meant to be - but still - I can't fathom how people can just up and leave their pets behind

I'm in the process of moving -and yes, it's harder to find a place that takes pets - but it's worth the effort to me - and i found an amazing place in which both Clancy and I can live...there's no way abandonement would even be a consideration!
