I think Stevie, like most everyone, can be hurt. But I don't think vulnerability equates a lack of toughness.

People who aren't hurt by anything, have shut themselves off. And that's no way to live.

I think her toughness has more to do with ambition, networking, and self promotion qualities than sensitivity to criticism.
seriously.. why does she have to be either one extreme or the other?? either tough as nails or extremely sensitive?? she's obviously a very emotional person.. if she weren't, she wouldn't be able to write the kinds of songs she does... on the other hand, if she wasn't a little tough, she wouldn't be able to cope with all the BS she went through with FM over the years or battle through the drugs, the weight, etc...

i'm sure she could handle the comments she would read on the internet... but i'm sure others in her camp who are more "computer savvy" filter out the BS- some of which spews out from the very people who frequent this board quite often..

Well I think Stevie knows that there are going to be ppl in this world that either like her or they don't, and I think she has accepted that from day 1. As long as she is being herself and claiming to do what she loves, and she claims to be feeling pretty lucky, then I say rock on!

Nuff said...

Exactly. Just because they may not tell her about the SOTB pics (which I think are very complimentary, btw ) or our Chiffon Head gift baskets filled with tamborines, scarves, cocaine & brandy deosn't mean that they DON'T say to her "hey, they want to hear a different cover song" or "Paula touched your legwarmer."

And hopefully they've told her, "Brian in PA loves 'When I See You Again.'"

I can totally see why she'd stay away from reading about herself on the internet. Can you imagine? Another very famous singer I know (okay, not Stevie famous, but she's a huge star in Canada and beyond) once told me that the worst thing a famous person can possibly do is Google themselves. Cause you can sit for hours and hours, and go from emotional euphoria to the point where you think everyone in the world hates you and you want to slit your wrists.

I think Stevie is tough as nails - but I also think she is extremely sensitive about her lyrics and music because they are so personal. She also strikes me as very insecure about herself and her music, despite the huge success she's had, and the multitudes of fans who shower her with love. I can understand that - because I can tell you that if I'm at work, and every single person I work with complements me on something I've done, and ONE person criticizes it, the multitudes of praise are wiped from my psyche, and the only thing that I carry away with me is the criticism.

Can you imagine an entire fan community?? There's tons o love out there... but there is criticism, too. As I said, I don't blame her for staying away.

That being said... I absolutely think people in her entourage read the boards, and I'm sure they pass along the good stuff.

And hopefully tell her to come back to Toronto!

That's different. You're talking about old wounds there.

I think she's a tough broad too, and probably sensitive more to criticisms of her appearance than her music. There is no way she could have made it this far without having a pretty thick skin. That being said, I don't think she is a stone.
But I believe she is more likely to respond to a criticism of her work with "When was the last time you sold millions of records, Motherf*cker ?" than "It hurts my self esteem, it hurts my everything."

When I was much younger I viewed her more as a helpless, vulnerable person who needed defending (see, the photography worked !), and defended her often and passionately. These days, I don't think of her that way. She can take care of herself.

Wow...seriously?! That does seem to ring a little bell... I'm telling ya... they're feeding this stuff back to her! Hey, I was on an email list once when we were talking about covers and I mentioned Black Velvet, shortly thereafter she performed at some charity function and did Black Velvet... so I know EXACTLY how you feel! Only not very many fans from the list had seen the charity performance so the impact wasn't as great as RandR is having on this board.

Okay... let's put our next order in...

I Want To See Stevie Wear A Top Hat and A Scarf
and Her Eyes Without Any Shadow (just kidding on that one, even I wouldn't do that)

If she could take any criticism sent her way, why would she stop touring or going on stage when she gained weight? She said that was all people talked about.

I don't want to go over the story again because so many people have already heard it, but when I met Stevie in 2001, I talked to her about the internet because I wanted her to know this is where all of us are. She told me she doesn't own a computer, has no desire to own one, and doesn't like looking at stuff about her on the internet.

This must have changed since she did say she emailed Sheryl Crow, but I don't think she reads the boards.

Yeah, she must have a computer now. She has a digital camera now so she has to have a place to store the data. I don't know about the net but I would not be surprised if she did send emails and IM's sometimes.
