I LOVED the TV movie, I thought Blythe Danner, Tammy Blanchard, and Beau Bridges all should have won Emmy's. But the book? Blech.

That one disturbed me to no end, just like Alan Duff's brilliant Once Were Warriors. Those were both books that I couldn't finish for a long time because they were so heavy.

So was Lovely Bones worth it in the end? If you say so, perhaps I'll give it another shot.

Thanks for the heads up, I will not read that one. Stay away from WWTM and you will avoid the same feeling. I mean, at the end there was peace and closure but it was after decades of suffering. Blech.

Dammit, I missed the movie, and I love those actors. I didn't want to watch it because the book made me feel so lousy.

If you enjoy C.S. Lewis, I'd recommend The Dark Is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper (Hume Cronyn's writing partner & wife after Jessica Tandy died), which I find superior. The Grey King (4th book) remains my favorite kid's book.
Incidentally, her book Seaward, which is not part of the series, has Rhiannon as a character.

Just finished re-reading Rachel Calof's Story, which I'm requiring as a text in the coming year. I'm also reading The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara, which I keep putting aside because it's depressing.

Well amidst all the intellectual books being read here, I'm going to have to say that I'm in the middle of Hidden Star by Nora Roberts

Had to put the Mortara book aside again. I just received about a thousand pages of assigned reading, beginning with A Problem From Hell. I imagine someone here has read it already. I'm four chapters in, & I'm embarrassed that I never read it when it came out. It's a powerful book.

I stopped by Barnes and Noble on the way home today and ended up getting Metroland by Julian Barnes. I've always loved the movie and when I saw it on one of the front tables, I figured there's no better time than the present to read it.
