I'm only about 30 pages in, but I am liking it so far. Oates is one of my favorites too, though sometimes she frustrated the hell out of me.

Also known as We Were the Mulvaneys. I couldn't even finish that one.

What do you mean? Sorry. I slogged through it, though. I'm a book whore. and in this case, the whore really applies. I kept waiting for something to occur.....

I thought Foxfire was brilliant. I was....there's no words to describe how disappointed with the movie I was. That was a travesty.

She wrote a book called We Were the Mulvaneys about a girl that gets raped and how it affects her family (i.e. they had to sell their farm, the father blamed the daughter, etc.), and it was just so dull and pointless that I felt like throwing it across the room. I loved Blonde, though. Thought it was brilliant.

Next I did the "Monsters" one, which went through all the stuff about Loch Ness, Yetis, Bigfoot in the pacific Northwest, and various other repeated sightings of strange creatures. That one was good. Now I'm doing...UFO's? Yeah, I just started that one. Anyway, I really like them, lots of good info and pictures. The other ones are like...Healing Powers, Ghosts and Stuff (not called that, though) and Psychic Powers. Score, since my friend hardly has any books in her house and rarely reads.

Those books sound really interesting... especially the "Monsters" and "UFOs".

I'm reading "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" by Robert Heinlein AND "With God On Their Side" by Esther Kaplan.... it's about how the fundies have taken control of our government.

oooohhhhh. So, you're saying that We Were was really dull, just like Do With Me What You Will, but you didn't read Do With Me. I haven't read Blonde. I almost bought it once, though. I'm sure I eschewed it in favor of some fast paced chick mystery set in SF....hehehehe.

Blonde is HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE! I flew through it because it was so good, but I never thought I was actually going to finish it. The miniseries sucked big time, though, what a disappointment that was.

They are great!!!!! The whole series is called "Mysteries of the Unknown" and all the titles are:
Mysterious Creatures
The UFO Phenomenon
Psychic Powers (I'm reading that one now)
Search For the Soul
Spirit Summonings
Powers of Healing
Cosmic Connections
They sound cheesy, but they are not. They just present all the historical evidence, and who did what, and who photographed what, and the fakers with the real evidence. it kicks ass!!!!! It's like it was made for me!
I've tried to read Heinlein before, but never got into it. With God on their Side sounds great....unfortunately I very rarely read non fiction. But Still....

Oh! I guess I should read it then! Thanks...I'll need something after I finish this series. I love huge books. I hate skinny books. It just means you have to buy another book the next day.

Are they Time/Life books or something like that? I think I remember seeing them advertised on TV a few years ago.

ooo...yep! They're good, though! I like them. They're basically just like history books.

That book was so depressing. The girl is raped and so she is sent away from her family against her will and they don't even really speak to her for years. It was awful awful awful. A TV movie was made out of it but I couldn't even watch it.

I felt the same way about The Lovely Bones. Everyone said how good it was, and I kept hoping for some life-affirming thing to happen or SOMETHING. I couldn't find anything by the time I was half way through, so I just put it down. I never finished it.
