Leave it to me to find bizarre and kind of nonsensical parallels, but that just reminded me of capital punishment. "Will innocent people get executed? Of course some will, but that's par for the course. No need to get rid of the institution."

[QUOTE=GateandGarden][COLOR=Indigo]Sometimes I think I'm the only one who has a hard time seeing that! It's so common that it seems like people don't even pay attention. It's awful to see something on the side of the road, and even worse when it's in the road and people continue to drive over it. [QUOTE]

I know. I have friends that go out over the weekends to spots where there tends to be lots of roadkill and remove it from the road or side of the road.

ha - yep..it's not an easy thing to do and in some places it's illegal. I know I couldn't do it for a multitude of reasons, but I respect them for it. It's just horrible to know that could have been someone's companion and friend now laying in the road and no one gives a second thought.

I couldn't handle that either. I admire your friends for it. Why is it illegal in some places?

I'm not exactly sure what the rules of civil procedure say for it, but it has something to do with the fact that some interstates, etc. are maintained by the state and it is the responsibility of the game warden to remove the animals and discard certain parts in certain ways; especially deer. Makes no sense to me...but I guess it also has to do with disease control and stuff.

I'm interested to know your stance on swatting at mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes spread deadly diseases. It's a matter of self-defense. If an animal's not hurting you than I think it should be left alone unless you're going to eat it, which is natural. Animals eat other animals. I've never understood the fact that PETA is so opposed to that. I think if a person doesn't want to eat animals then that's his or her decision that is not to be pushed onto others. I usually don't like to for various reasons.

Anyway, I'm getting off track but my point is that mosquitoes are harmful (sometimes deadly) to humans and in the case of recreational fishing, the fish are not.

But if we're comparing fish and mammals or mammals versus other animals like mosquitoes and such (or if mosquitoes have absoltutely nothing to do with this and were only used for the purpose of sarcasm), I still have the same question, I suppose. Why are mammals better than those other animals? Because something's more cuddly it's automatically better? Its life is more precious? That doesn't make sense to me.

Wink Hmm...

Don't we kill ants and super small insects everyday by walking on them (without knowing it) and driving over them? LOL

I'm bein' funny, but PETA sesly needs to get their priorities straight.

Oh, okay. I see there might be good reasons behind it, then. Hard for me to say for sure but maybe so.

I lost respect for PETA a long time ago. They've been rendering their own efforts useless for some time with things like their "holocaust on your plate" campaign. The real problem is that they are the most prominent animal rights organization and this type of **** casts a bad light on the movement as a whole.

I totally agree with this statement. I can't speak for other people, but I don't believe that the lives of insects, fish, or other creatures are at all less valuable than those of mammals. That's not to say that I never kill insects. I won't hesitate to kill a mosquito if I find it buzzing around my house, neither will I hesitate to drown out a colony of Argentinian ants if it moves in to either my crab tank or my frog tank (which has happened before), and of course I regularly buy crickets to feed to my frog. I also apply a monthly flea preventative to my cats. For me, its a matter of the fact that mosquitos, ants, and fleas pose a serious risk to the health of my pets, which are far more precious to me than any insect. And of course, the frog has to eat something. I would also not hesitate to kill a tick if i ever saw one on one of my critters.
Other than that, I live and let live. Any other wayward creature - spider, fly, whatever, I capture live and set free outside.
