I know some people here look down on Spielberg, but honestly Jaws, ET, Close Encounters, the Indy films - I grew up loving those films, I don't understand the hate at all.

I think it is the whole thing that FM went through after Rumors. I think people who are too cool for the room like to disassociate themselves from the popular things. But - to each their own

She looks so wrong playing a grown-up.
Actually, I had a little cognitive dissonance as well with that whole age thing, just watching her on Letterman. She was good in Ice Storm.

I thought Spielberg's first few films were good, but that he has turned into a feel good hack. Everything is always wrapped up in a neat little bow. I find him very formulaic and boring. But, I don't expect his movies to make me think. I saw Minority Report against my better judgement and hated it. Didn't see Schindler's List, and won't. I have had it up to my eyeballs with Holocaust movies.

I thought his performances in Collateral and Interview w/A Vamp. were especially good. And I haven't seen BOTFOJ, but he got an Oscar Nod, right? And A Few Good Men is really, really, really, one of my very favorite movies. I didn't like him in Eyes Wide Shut, though. I thought that was a less than good performance.

I thought the failure of EWS was mostly Kubricks and the subject matter or more Kubrick's interpretation of it. The story was very dated and outlandish. I thought he was okay in it, but horribly miscast. He does not play meek in a Kubrick fu&k fest very well

Nicole was good, though.

I think his acting reflects his lack of intelligence. He doesn't learn, he's repetitive, the only thing he's good at is to exaggerate and luckily for him two great directors like Stone e P.T. Anderson and a good one, Michael Mann have been able to transform a defect in a quality, at least for three movies. He doesn't even try to build a character, there's no deepness, or creativity. Kubrick has built a statue to his incapacity to see, to react, to be an actor. That doesn't mean he can't be successful. I didn't say he was stupid, he knows what he can and what he can't do. But what he does hasn't for most of the time any interest for me. About the actual situation: if the story is true, he's proving to be incapable to protect from himself the woman he loves; if it isn't true he's been dull enough to accept this farce. In both cases he's not showing intelligence to me.

Romy

P.S Hmm... I guess now I can wait for my honorary Tom Cruise fan card.

Oh, I think she's in deeper than that. She's probably promised the next 5-10 years of her life to him in order to become a huge star ala Nicole Kidman. Not a bad gig.
He really needs to let Pat Kingsley handle his PR again because IMO, his sister just doesn't get it. She's not objective enough.

She has a wonky mouth, weird teeth and a weird child's face on a grown-up model's body. It just freaks me out.
I always thought she was a decent actress too but her role as Tom's new girlfriend ain't too convincing I must say.
The Letterman appearance was a little pathetic. The really need to prompt her on the details of her and Tom's relationship. She looked quite blank when asked about it.

I say it would be over in less than a year. I hope she really didn't buy she could become a star like Nicole Kidman only staying with Cruise. There's a whole world of class between them. I think Katie Holmes has a potential, but to renounce to a controversial role to make his Beverly Hills prophet happy doesn't show that kind of courage that a real actress should have, IMO.

Sociologist, my ass. He admitted back in the sixties that he founded Scientology to get tax breaks.

Yes, it's one of my fave movies ever. The cast is spectacular. But, actually, I think most people here have seen it...

He was the lone embarrassment in the incredible Magnolia. That movie showed what a truly amateurish actor he is.
