Obtuse References / Metaphors

All these top 10 lists got me thinking: What about the top 10 references and metaphors in La Nick's songs that are just totally out there? Songs or phrases that you wish she would re-work? Words that just don't fit? Songs about stuff that you just can't relate to? I couldn't come up with 10, but here are my top songs that I find just ackward:

Jane - no need to elaborate
Paper Doll - refusing to wear a coat
Nightbird - makeup and boots
That Made Me Stronger - song writing
I Miss You Now - European cities and fame questions
Seven Wonders - Emmiline
Love Is - the track of my tears
Kick It - kick what?

Street Angel - I've come to love the music & vocal, but the lyrics? Ugh. I still don't really know what a Street Angel is (I just know that they live on the streets & they always will.)

Ooh My Love - the whole castle thing - eh.

Street Angel - I've come to love the music & vocal, but the lyrics? Ugh. I still don't really know what a Street Angel is (I just know that they live on the streets & they always will.)

Ooh My Love - the whole castle thing - eh.

There's one that's been bugging me lately, I can't think of it right now....

Oh I'd love to see Stevie going to the laundromat in her platforms.

One thing I'll say about Ooh My Love, TOSOTM was recorded in an old castle if I recall correctly, so I guess it's about her affair with Rupert Hine which would have been "in the shadow of the castle walls".

Wow, I love the lyrics to Nightbird. "I wear boots all summer long" that's fantastic to me.

But I agree about the cringe-worthy lyrics to TMMS.

I dunno... ...that one seems WAY obvious; probably the most obvious of ANY Stevie Nicks song...its about HOMELESS PEOPLE!!

Hmm, I dunno. I just know it was a Dutch-style castle and apparently it was "fabulous"
It cost a bomb too. I think they converted it into a recording studio, if I recall correctly, I don't think it was one to start with.

Here are some lines that have me perplexed:

"There is a world that rises within the wind rose" from 24K Gold

"Sometimes the real color of my skin... my eyes without any shadow." from Nightbird

"The blankets that I love..." from Nightbird

"I wear boots all summer long." from Nightbird... kind of see a pattern here?

"In silence she says 'Excalibur.'" from Sable on Blond... WTF????

"Tar People" from Space Needle

"You fill the room with the wind and the rain and the water." from No Spoken Word, as opposed to "...the rooms are all on fire everytime you walk in the room." from Rooms on Fire. Hmmm... fire, wind, water... we are only missing earth. How 'bout, "You fill the room with mud every time you walk in the room."

"One set of doors was the color of honey; one set of doors was pink and grey." from Affairs of the Heart.

"And if I was a child, and the child was enough...for me to love... enough to love." from Gypsy


Perhaps someone should write a murder mystery where the clues are based on Stevie song lyrics... call it "The Stevie Nicks Code."

I adore the song, but that whole section is awkward. It just doesn't work and the reference to "tar people" is simply laughable. Only she could call heroin junkies "tar people" and then use it in a song. She's a good writer, I'm sure she can come up with something better and more creative to express the failure of their stints in rehab.

Boy, I disagree with some of these. I love the wind and rain line in NSW and the castle thing in OML.

I'll contribute the line "Well, if she had flung out her heart against him, then in all of her wisdom, Oooh, that was a mystery"
