But seriously, I would love to strap a torrent-head into a chair and do an audio test to see if he/she could tell the difference between a FLAC and a high bitrate mp3.
The problem is that a large number of people rip them at low bitrates to start with. MP3s are inferior in quality to begin with (not that most people can hear it on MP3s with high bitrates) and the reason those chaps are so anal about them is because they want to keep music and bootlegs in their original form instead of having stuff converted to MP3, slapped onto a CD, and then traded and ripped once again at a lower bitrate. If they take the time to boot the stuff, I'm going to take the time to adhere to the standards they set. Most traders won't touch Mac/Stevie stuff with a ten foot pole because it's all been ripped as low quality MP3s and traded for; a lot of it is plain ole ****.

What happened to just sharing music for the sake of sharing it? Like, sharing the groove, man, dig? I wouldn't give a rat's ass what people intend to do with it, especially since, a) I am pragmatic, b) I am not entitled to financial compensation, c) it is not my music to begin with; the artist is the one who unwittingly gets exploited in all of this. And it's one thing if you have undergone extraordinary effort to make an authorized studio recording of something... but here we are talking about primarily AUDIENCE recordings, which are full of ambient noise and clutter; they are hardly pristine feats of engineering to start with, so what is the point of treating them like they are like master tapes? Again, only a spectrum analyzer and perhaps some breeds of dogs could discern a "lossless" vs. a high bitrate mp3. So let's fight the real enemy here- crappy bitrates!

You can't. You just have to keep trying until a slot opens up.

OK, can someone please walk me through what the heck you do after you download the files? They're all flac files, and I downloaded some program called FLAC frontend to convert them to WAVs, but I can't seem to get that to work. All this just to hear "How Still My Love"...
Help???

Try going to www.dbpoweramp.com and downloading the free converter. That's what I use and it's pretty easy, once you figure it out! I don't say "easy" lightly either-I'm a recovering technophobe who is incredibly techno-challenged, so if I can do it ANYONE can!

Hey Jessica, thanks for the tip... I downloaded that program but now it doesn't seem to recognize the .flac files from the torrent program... Is there something I need to do to them first?

If you have Flac Front End... that's all you need to convert them.

Open the program - it will be a small square window that opens up with a blank white area with the word files above the white area... this is where you drop the files into to convert.

Open the folder where you have the flac files and drag and drop them into this window. Once that is done you are ready to convert.

In the bottom section under the heading "General Options" you have an option that says "Delete Input Files". Check this off if you want the flac files to be automatically deleted once they are converted to wav. If you don't want them to be deleted leave it blank.

Below that under the heading "Output Directory" make sure it says in the window "Same as input directory" meaning.. you want the converted files to be placed back into the folder where you got them from.

Once you decided on those two items click the button on the right that says "Decode" and a black dos window should open up and you should be able to watch as the files are being converted to wav... takes no time at all.

Try dragging and dropping one file into the flac program as a test to see how it works.

Good luck.
