I agree in part. I too love Mariah and was addicted "back in the day" and was really shocked when she changed the format of her music. But I had to walk away for a while and come back to her music and appreciate it in a different way. Yeah, she doesn't do ballads the way she used to or use her voice the way she used to, but she does an amazing job of layering vocals and really takes time to make a REAL remix and produces some nice tracks. Emancipation is an awesome album and We Belong Together is worth the price of the album, IMO.

Also, I watched Mariah about 1 1/2 yrs ago do some of her older songs and honestly, she couldn't do it. Her voice was extremely raspy. So, I guess she works what she's got. She's more of a studio singer anyway. But I still love her.

I could not agree more. She is very adamant about that and I think it's awesome. I saw her getting ready to go into Letterman and she was being rushed in, but walked off the "red carpet" to a fan she saw in a wheelchair, hugged her neck and mouthed the words, "you doing okay?" - I respect her for things like that and this isn't an isolated event.

Anyway, like they say, people build you up to knock you down. I don't like every song or everything she's worn or said or done, but in the end I respect her talent and songwriting and the fact that she is grateful for her fans...and appreciates them giving her the life she has.

hmmm...so nobody knows The Family Stand nor sees the resemblence in titles......So I have a request: Trackaghost, please quote my last post and say you agree with me. Then I know I'm not alone and can go on in other threads that rock my boat too.

And about that classy remark around Satan's balls: Mariah should lick them for a month or two. Enough to turn in that academic drizzle into raw emotion.

Not only that, but in my humble opinion, her top range was really mostly unmanageable squeals, which is not a singing voice as traditionally defined. Tower - if you are reading, what do you think?

I did a little research and I came up with this...

Also, I always love to point out that Cyndi Lauper has 4 octaves. You look at that little pixie and would never think so, but she does.

I always thought Celine had almost as much as Mariah, but I suppose not. And I have almost four octaves myself, but hell if I can actually use my voice to its full capacity. I have little or no control over it once I get to certain high notes. Forget it, especially I haven't been in choir for a long time.

But anyway, back to the real people.

I've heard a lot of people saying that Mariah has a seven or eight octave range, but I didn't think that was humanly possible, actually.

On that note, a voice teacher once told me that many opera singers have only around a 2 1/2 octave range and that's all that's necessary. I guess it's not really all that important to have a large one.

She blew me away when I saw her live with Cher. I didn't realize she had that kind of range and she was going from difficult note to difficult note with ease, it seemed. She's great.

I have two words for you:

SHINE. LIVE.

I almost passed out when she performed it. Her voice has not lost a single thing. Not one note. That chorus is a killer and she pulled it out of herself like it was nothing. What a talent. And she's fantastic live. I saw a solo show of hers without Cher two years ago and she came down into the audience to sing (literally jumped off the stage and into the audience) and when people shouted out for her to sing a certain song, she'd sing it. Sometimes acapella.

Ahh, discussing Cyndi's awesome vocal talents again. Love her. I was blown away when we saw her last year - I went out & got her live DVD the next day. She is phenomenal.

Diss - did you get the DVD yet?

She's coming back (or she was just here) but it was a casino show & sold out within a week or so & I missed out.
