You know I like playing devil's advocate just for the sake of a good discussion Seriously, you hit upon the exact thing we differ about most of the time...the literal meaning of SN songs...if there is any literal meaning in any of them. Sometimes she gives little explanations of her process in writing a song, and she drops hints about inspiration now and then. Rarely does she say this song means this. She also tells us to read between her lines...go read the story, or think about it...just to name a few things that hint at what she wants people to know about her meaning. I don't insist any song is about XY or Z. You know I like to argue so I toss out the cookies and wait to see who takes a bite. I can always depend on you. ![]() |

Here it is:
"That song certainly could have been said in a lot harder terms. And I could have sounded a lot angrier. The music could have been a lot angrier behind it. But I chose to make it more poignant as opposed to you know, like if I had been speaking all those words, I probably would have been yelling. So, 'doing the best that I can,' in the hardest of terms, means 'get off my back,' basically. I'm doing the best that I can. And I have been doing the best that I can for as long as I can remember, so either give me a break or leave me alone. And it's a very serious song for me... I mean, it's sad: 'in my distress/I wanted someone to blame me/in my own way, disaster was the only thing that I could depend on.' I mean, that's pretty much down in the very depths of despair. Which is where I pretty much was when I wrote this song; which meant, I cannot take all of this advice and keep on living with all of you. You've got to let me grow up and leave me to make my own decisions. I'm a grown up. I'm not a child." ~Stevie Nicks, Castle Walls interview "I wrote this song to tell people that yes, I did suffer, and I have suffered but that I refuse to let the bad parts ruin my life and the good parts of my life be erased. So I said I'm just going to simply remove the bad parts and I'm coming out of a phase now, I think, where I was unhappy, and I was very lonely and I didn't feel if I exactly knew if I should still be here or not. Maybe I would be better off on the next plain, living a much more spiritual life, maybe. Saying 'in my distress, I wanted someone to blame me,' because people would go around me and like if I did something that wasn't right, they'd take the blame for it or they'd get me out of it. I'd get to the point where I'd go 'just get mad at me, it's my fault. I did it, nobody else did. I did it. Why are you blaming somebody else?' And it says 'in my devastation I wanted so much to change.' I did, I wanted so much to be happier because I was becoming more unhappy by the day and in my own way they only thing I had to depend on was disaster because it seemed like nobody would get off my back, nobody would leave me alone, nobody would keep their opinions to themselves. It was like most of the people I know are quite a bit younger than I am and I would want to say to them, 'you haven't been through what I've gone through, so please stop telling me what I should do!' It means let me do what I have to do. This is not your problem, this is my problem." ~Stevie Nicks, 1989 taken from http://www.sararhiannon.com/tosotmalbum.htm (lord love ya doll and thanks as always!!! ) |

Oddly enough, someone earlier implied this was one of the rare times she didn't mean this the way it sounds or reads. She's just being tounge-in-cheek that time. She only really means the negative things she reflects on about LB. She only says good things because as we know..."I only say what you want to hear." ![]() |

![]() One of the funniest lines she's ever written. I have a hard time believing that stout little drama queen steers clear of conflict. She wouldn't be able to write a single one of her bloody songs if she did.

I don't think Stevie's ever really been "negative" in things she's said about Lindsey. The most biting comments were made during the Klonopin Years, of course, and she has since admitted that she apologized to a lot of people after kicking the Klonopin, for the things she said and did while addicted to it. She took responsibility for her actions, owned up to them and apologized for them.
But, even then, her comments at the time sounded to me (and I admit to having a bit of a bias) that she was simply being candid about how SHE felt during those years, and how things he did made her feel. Of course she couldn't comment on how the things she did in turn made HIM feel, because she's not him and wouldn't know. Those comments would have to come from him. I don't think Lindsey was the bad guy. I don't think Stevie was the bad guy. In fact, I don't think there was a "bad guy" -- just two relatively young people, trying to navigate their way through life, careers, romantic relationships, fame, etc. Who doesn't screw up royally now and then, even without the added baggage of wealth and mass adulation? That they can work together now and tour together for two years, says a lot about each of them as people and about their relationship (I'm not implying a torrid love affair with that statement though -- so no wrong ideas). Expecting them to get along 100% of the time is unrealistic... they'll always have a complicated relationship. But they are in each other's lives, when they could very easily have gone the route of never seeing or speaking to each other again (Michelle & John Phillips, for example). Here's how I look at it: If Lindsey were an awful, violent, jealous bastard, then Stevie wouldn't have anything to do with him. If Stevie were a calculating, spiteful, vindictive bitch, then Lindsey wouldn't have anything to do with her. And if either of them exhibited some of that behaviour in the past, well, then, that's all water under the bridge now, and the two people that behaviour would have affected most, have obviously matured since then and have forgiven each other. Ok, time to head off to work! ![]()
