"Get ready....stand in line...take me home with you..." Anyone have any idea when "Steves" Riff was penned by one Mr. Lindsey Buckingham???

Yeah. Some people say that every Stevie Nicks song is about Lindsey. Well, I'm not going to try to prove otherwise, because there's no really hard evidence against any supposition anyone wants to make. But what does that say about a songwriter if thirty years' worth of songs are about the same subject? Is that even possible ... in anybody's case? Wouldn't that be a sign of some sort of mental problem? an obsession, at the very least.

Doesn't it make more sense to assume, if you think Stevie Nicks is a really great poet, blah blah blah, that she has written about dozens of different experiences & people over the decades, & brought her little measure of wisdom (blah blah blah) to many of the little cracks & crevices, the nooks & crannies of experience?

How great can a poet be -- any poet -- who has nothing to write about for 30 years except a single love affair & the fallout from it? Does Stevie live in a shoebox?

A good example of this is the "baby don't leave me" apparently originally intended for GDW - but then actually on IYEDB. I know there are other theories, but I think the GDW pleading (and the song itself actually) is her pleading with alter self (the same one she says is in SOTM) not to leave or she will lose her innocence, sense of self being, etc. In IYEDB - I think it has a whole other meaning and it literally is referring to a person.

I also think the "standing in a line" does refer to waiting for charity or some other perhaps demeaning thing or that the person will lose everything and be forced there, etc. So, I think that works along with that song. Interestingly, many many people think La Nicks wrote SB as a plea to LB to save her from marrying Robin. When that theory is explained, it makes sense - that is the thing about La Nicks' songs, they can be applied to so many things. I like that

On edit and in reference to your statement "They're all in the song cuz she said so" - well why would she lie? Again, in Landslide, it is consistent that it is about her dad, the financial option they offered, and LB's leaving her to go on the road, and the decision she was forced to make. Those things go hand and hand to me - so I take her at her word - which many are IMO inexplicably loathe to do.
Hon, I don't want to keep defending why I think Steive is less than forthcoming when she tells us what she wants us to know about her songs. It's obvious to me why she says the things she says. It's the stuff she doesn't say that brings out all the red flags for me. I've just been listening to her for too damn long.

Hey, let me ask you this about SB. I know you meant she wanted somebody to stop her from marying Kim not Robin, so just for ****s and giggles, suppose that does come across if you listen to that song. I didn't know she wrote it on her wedding night until about 5 years ago but when I saw her sing it on Solid Gold in '83 I believed it was about her wedding and her having a change of heart and desire about marriage in general. If you've seen the Civil War version of SB, the one she wanted made but doesn't want anyone to see, do you see any meaning it that little movie?

Are most of her songs not about the exact same subject? She loved him, she lost him, they couldn't be together due to extraneous conflict, etc? I believe it was either Mick or John that are quoted as saying she romanticizes her own romanticism. It's the truth. She does. I wouldn't call it a mental problem...i'd call it sabotaging your life and the ability to live it for your art. She draws on this.

Oops - did I say Robin

As for the wedding night, that is cool you got that vibe, but I never did. There was a big thread about on Nancy's board awhile back with some cool comments.
probably - because she is sort of

I agree, every song changes for every listener, and in my opinion, even if a song seems written about a specific subject, can be about something totally different at the same time, covered by a safer symbol. Then artists (at least those I like) rewrite their songs many times through their performances, during the years, according to what they're living, the way they've changed, their new inspiration, etc. A work of art can never be completed, I think, it's visible only a small part of it.
By the way, since I love to speculate about Stevie songs too I think BATB is about Stevie-Mick relationship (not only the intimate side, but also their friendship, their roles in FM, their being easily labeled by media and fans) and about the person she felt to be at the time.

My FAV's are the ones in the late 70's and early 80's when she is just LOADED and speaks in seemingly incomplete sentences and about three tings at one time

I personally believe she just plays to fans on this, her most popular songs were written about Lindsey. You do have a point though, I remember him saying in Destiny Rules that he cannot believe they are still dealing with the same subject matter. If all of these songs are about Lindsey and Mick... I find that kind of heatbreaking that she can't move on.

But the point I think people are missing here is she doesn't..err...didn't... move on for arts sake. She draws on the relationship that never had any closure.

Well, I do not think she has written anything about Mick since before Tusk as they recorded, I think, B&B for Tusk in a bluesy demo. As for LB, she will never get through that and he will not either as far as the songwriting goes.

But seriously, glitter, what I was trying to say is that it's not "right" or "wrong" -- it's like the Devil citing Scripture for his purpose. For practically any Stevie Nicks song, you could dig back through interviews & articles & comments made onstage & find some sort of support for any supposition you want to make. Just because somebody writes a song doesn't mean that person remembers all the details that were put into it at a time when that person was in a different frame of mind. I think Stevie often sounds a little confused about her own songs in interviews, anyway. I have often thought that. Talking with Jim Ladd or other guys in the old days, she used to start talking about what she was doing while she was writing the song instead of what the song "meant" -- like with "Stand Back," the story she always tells is that she was driving along with Kim somewhere & they're listening to "Little Red Corvette" on the radio. Well, is THAT what the song is about?? That's just the circumstance she was in, the activity she was engaged in, when the song was being created (or was being thought about). Remember her story about "Dreams"? She was sitting in Sly Stone's sunken lounge with its dark, gaudy colors up at the Record Plant when she put that song together. But the song isn't about Sly Stone, Stevie! Or maybe it is . . . who the hell knows?

So all these songs are really about what the listeners see & hear in them. When you hear "Beauty," you obviously hear a tale of love between Stevie & ... Lindsey, I guess? I hear a song about Stevie & Mick & I see all those dozens of photos throughout the years -- the ones that used to appear in magazines like Hit Parader -- of the two of them, arms around each other, at some function or other, the top of Stevie's head going up to Mick's rib cage.

Somebody was wondering in another thread just how old the stories about their affair were, & people said it predated Mick's book in 1990, which is true. I remember a little photo of Stevie & Mick -- it could have been anything, like one of those awards ceremonies -- appearing in a trashy rock magazine with a caption: something about Stevie & Mick having recently "split up." I was a little fan back then (around 1980) & I didn't know much of the scoop, so I thought it was just a goofy caption that didn't really mean anything, or a mistake for Stevie & Lindsey splitting up, or the band split up, or something. And there were occasional stories that would surface through the years about Stevie & Mick, & the stories were pretty widely known among the rabids, especially at times when Stevie & Mick were hanging out together a lot, like 1986 (Mick followed her around in California to all her shows & played conga drums next to Bobbye Hall).
I agree with so much here, as usual. I think we agree a lot because we remember things as they were playing out and not from trying to piece together quotes left from back in the day. I know what I remember but it takes too much time to run around trying to dig up old articles we read 25 years ago before a few of these things were archived on the Internet. Hardly any of the rock press is archived and I didn't save all the old mags like some people did. I never envisioned myself needing to look up quotes someday.

ITA, hunting down quotes and articles will never result in much of a clear view. I also agree about Stevie having confusion on her own songs, but I disagree on her revelations about her writing process. It plays to her need to shade her honest feelings and emotions if she talks about process and not meaning. People run with her explanations of her songs and they often run the wrong way, imo, but so many people are buying into Stevie's confessional poetry style of writing because they think they understand her songs so much when she says she writes from her journals and writes the truth. Songs are personal to everyone and I don't really care what she was meaning to herself in her lyrics unless I hear her say one thing about a song then contradict that statement in another interview or within the lyrics of the very song she spoke about. I find that annoying and she does it all the time. I don't think it's because she wants to mislead people. I think it's for another reason. I think she should not talk about the meanings or inspirations of her songs if she wants to be ambiguos on the meanings. Nobody but she knows what she thought about 100% of the time while penning a poem. Like you said, I'm not sure she always knows either.

I don't know, quite a few people consider Petrarch a great poet, despite the fact he wrote/revised sonnets about his Laura for, oh, 40 years or so.

I might be wrong, but I've always sensed that some fans get defensive about Stevie's lyrics if discussions lead to a conclusion she wrote about one aspect of her inner turmoil too much. Does that change something about being the poet that she is? Is she not as special or not as insightful? In the same situation would we think that about Bob Dylan?
