Well, I opted for the faux wood Romeo and Juliet models - ya know, the ones with the disporportionate hands sticking out trying to touch - but never doing so - the boy is in soft pink and the boy in baby blue - sighes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interestingly, if you took the word Mick and put Lindsey in its place, there would be far less of an argument because more people like to see her with him.
When there's an argument about Stevie's song inspirations, is the argument really coming from people who don't think she loved Mick and some other men she was involved with, or is it coming from people who don't want to believe Stevie has a particular muse? I don't think anyone, except the people putting words in other people's mouths, said Stevie could not and did not love Mick. Some people don't think BATB is specifically about Mick, even though Stevie seems to want us to believe so. How does that mean those people won't accept she loved Mick? They just think the song is not about her sadness and pain over losing Mick as a lover. She says she wrote it for Mick, or it was inspired by events surrounding their breakup. I accept that. I think most people do. There's also a nuanced difference in saying a song is about someone, instead of for someone, or inspired by someone. Stevie knows that nuanced difference, and you do too, Jason. You used the nuances in what she said in the Ladd interview to defend her failure to deliver the show she promised. Stevie minces words a lot just like her buddy Bill Clinton, whom I also love. I don't see why a disagreement on her song inspirations always leads people to defending or attacking any believed attachment or love for anyone she's been in a relationship with.

To be fair, I sense just as much resistance here, if not more, to the idea that Stevie could have always been attached to Lindsey (stronger resistance if you say she still is) and he was a great muse for her songwriting, (again, stronger objections if anyone says he still is.) Why? I don't really get it any more than I get people saying she didn't love Mick. Posters who actually bring up her not loving Mick are the ones who attack posters saying she's still bonded to Lindsey. It's not the people who say she's still attached to Lindsey that are saying she couldn't or didn't love Mick. Isn't that weird?

I've noticed over the years that a lot of Stevie's devoted solo fans have a big problem with anyone implying she could have a needy attachment to Lindsey. If she actually did have such a bond and it still plays a large role in her emotional life, would that make you like her songs or her career any less? I'm not saying I side with anyone who thinks her songs are about anyone in particular. I don't think there should be arguments about what her songs mean unless people are open to seeing Stevie's songs as a reflection of her own conscience. Diss said something I agree with when he pointed out she's often reflecting about her own role in her past relationships when she writes. I think that's the most significant thing to note about BATB and Storms. I like what her songs mean to me and I don't care who she says her songs are written for, which is not the same as saying who they were written about.

I posted this next thing in another thread last night when I thought I was within the discussions in this thread. Too many threads to keep track of. lol! I'm putting it here too to follow up on why I said BATB is not about Mick, imo, but mostly about Stevie...any connection to other persons living or dead is coincidental and names have been changed to protect the innocent.
-------------------------------------------------

From a Rolling Stone interview in 1981. This is the first thing she said publicly about the story of BATB.

Stevie says that her favorite fairy tale is Beauty and the Beast. She loved the fable as a child, but when she saw the Jean Cocteau film rendition in later years, her fascination was cemented. She'll recount her version of the yarn at the drop of a hat, claiming that, at the end of the fable, "Beauty became the Beast, and he became the beautiful one."

The story line, as Stevie tells it, concerns the plight of a sweet-natured woman named Beauty, the youngest of three otherwise repellent sisters, who volunteers to become a captive angel in the Beast's castle after her father incurs his wrath by plucking one of his prized roses. Beauty rides to her palatial prison on a magic white horse sent by the Beast and settles into a grotesque lifestyle wherein she spurns the affections of her gentlemanly captor, breaking his heart a little more each day with her increasingly cruel taunts in the face of his love.

When Beauty learns her father is dying, the Beast allows her to go to him, but warns that if she does not return by the seventh day, he will expire from despair. On the eighth day, she leaves her dead father and venal sisters and rushes back to the castle to find that the Beast is done for. In his last breath, he says that all a beast who loves her can do is die for her.

there are several more paragraphs to the article and then it ends with this last passage:

Sitting across from Stevie as she dries her eyes and slips back into here and now, I can think of only one appropriate question.

"In your version of Beauty and the Beast, Beauty finally understands that there are difficult choices to make in this world. Knowing her fate, if you were her, what would your decision have been?"

"I would have chosen the Beast," she says softly. "Absolutely."

-----------------------------------------------------

Does anyone really believe Stevie sees Mick as a beautiful person after he dumped her for her friend and left her heartbroken? I'm sure that experience was somewhat of a wake-up call for her. She didn't fully realize what it meant to be on the receiving end of that traumatic experience until it happened to her.

For anyone who knows the story of BATB, without even reading this article, the heartbreak of the female character in the story comes from her realizing how badly she hurt somebody who deserved better than what her choices resulted in when she left him. They both suffered the consequences but it was too late to undo what had been done. If that IS the pain really coming through in this song, does it have to mean she never loved Mick? I'm sure he hurt her a great deal when he ended their affair and I think she loved him. But is it possible she feels a different loss or sorrow for someone else SHE might have hurt?
