I think OSOTM is far superior to RAL and SA, but it in no way showcases her true capabilities. Of her solo albums, only BD and WH accomplish that. TISL has flashes of brilliance, but widely misses the mark in others.

I've always loved "That's Alright," even before I had any interest in country music. It's so wistfully poignant. And John's bassline is just great.

I rarely listen to SA or RAL. With a few exceptions, they are embarrassingly subpar albums. We know what she's capable of, and "The Nightmare" and "Jane" ain't it.

no its not lyrics...i don't really even know the lyrics to the song....it's just the general sound of country music i dislike....i don't listen to enough country music to put it into adequate words of exactly what I dislike. But I do live in Texas so it's around. i usually also dislike the generic "country voice" but luckily stevie does not have that. but country music and rap are the two main genre's I dislike

Would it be presumptuous of me to wonder if maybe you just haven't heard much good country music? Most of the country music that you hear casually just by virtue of living in Texas is probably the bottom of the barrel crap, just as most of the pop/rock songs you hear on corporate radio aren't anything to write home about.

If you can't articulate what exactly you dislike about country music in general, can you say what you don't like about "That's Alright?"

Sidenote: I really despise the "generic countyr voice," as well, and its a convention that really puzzles me, as country music used to be all about singing from a distinct voice. Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris... you only need to hear about two seconds of any one of their songs, and you know whose voice it is. And they bring something unique to any song that they sing. Whatever happened to that?

I live in Texas too (Speaking of...Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind? LMAO! Sorry, George Strait humour.) and growing up, my dad listened to either oldies or country. I went through a period when I didn't like it at all, but lately, I've been listening to it more. I love 80's country, which gets knocked a lot for it's pop leanings. Dolly Parton is my favorite female country singer, she's just phenom. Her and Stevie are eerily similar too. Keith Urban is my favorite male country singer. I have never been to any country concerts (well, Keith, but that's Keith, baby!! LOL), don't own many country CD's, but I do love me some Ronnie Milsap, George Strait, and various songs from various people.

I would say in almost every genre, there's a sub-genre of singer/songwriter who is different, stands away from the norm. I would put Keith in that category. If you don't like country, that's cool, but there are lots of artists in various genres that might surprise ya.

I agree with you so much. Lately, a lot of what's being done has already been done before and done better by someone else.

But in reference to "That's Alright," some people tell me they just don't like twang in general.

You've forgotten the one and only George Jones, surely one of the greatest country singers ever.

I hate modern country music. Most of it sounds like bland pop music sung in the generic country voice you've described. Just cos you've got a twang in your voice doesn't make the music country.

Yes, and the lovely Lucinda Williams, too. Though she seems to get categorized as "rock" more than "country," I think, at least at the record store. Same for Steve Earle. Of course, the best music often does seem to defy easy categorization.
