Nope... I don't buy it. She might have wanted it but I don't think it was ever going to happen.

And according to the Dixie Chicks when interviewed in 02, were asked if you can "just do someones song without permission" and they said "yeah you can just do it, but we're all friends with Stevie and wanted to ask."

I think all you have to do is get permission from her publishing company or Sony/BMI whatever...

Wow..interesting. I just watched those kids on AI discussing their song choices and they said they couldnt do whatever they wanted without the artist authorization. If Stevie owns the copyright on the words, I just don't see how someone can use them without her consent but maybe I am way wrong.

I heard Stevie say she needed a drummer until the end of the year but nothing about "touring" until the end of the year, unless I missed it. I thought the "needing a drummer" could be the Vegas thing too. I heard that was a semi permanent replacement type gig for when Celine and Elton are away. I really cannot see her touring with Don and then embarking on a solo thing but if ya'll see that happening..more power to ya. I would rather have her alone anyway.

Didn't she way she worked on that project, but the Hollywood people creeped her out so she stopped. I think that was in Rolling Stone, but I am unsure - though she did say it.

I think La Nicks since The Dance has not really had time to do it and it appears she has no time now either. Maybe one day.

How it works is as the owner of the song(s) you sign over your copyright to the publisher (bmi, ascap etc), who are responsible for tracking and administering the songs use and paying you your royalties, based on radio play, use in commercials, played in shopping malls... anywhere where there is an audience. The publisher collects the rate - keeps half the proceeds and the other half is given to the artist as royalties. The rate per song on an album used to be 7.5 cents per song, but it's probably around 8 cents per song now, and each time one of your cds is manufactured you are paid that 7-8 cents per song if you are the copyright holder - this is paid to your publisher by the record company... and again they keep half (for tracking and collecting) and you get the other half. Those are some basics.

I'm sure the artist has to give permission along with the publisher, like a partnership.

I don't think that's entirely true. The copyright holder gets paid when somebody uses a song, but depending on how the publishing rights were obtained, I don't think permission has to be granted by a songwriter for someone to use their song. If a songwriter sells the publishing rights to their work they often lose control of the work. I thought.

When MJ bought the Beatles catalog I don't think PM was too pleased that "Revolution" was being used to sell sneakers.
He obviously had no say in the matter.

Well, I for one am just glad to get anything out of the woman whether it be with Don or not. And the whole thing about this being a cash grab well maybe so but Stevie made what 20-30 million last year for singing songs around the world. Hello!!! Can someone sign me up for that???
If anyone hasn't noticed most entertaiment is a cash grab.
So even if the majority of us think Don is a prick, I'm not going for him I'm going to support Stevie. And has anyone thought that since Don goes back with the Eagles in August (or September, whichever) that Stevie might tour with him for June and July then come back through without him, since she said she would "need a drummer through the end of the year". But hey if some of you don't want to go, less competion for tickets for the people that want to go.

Can someone direct me to the quote or interview where Stevie says she is touring until the end of the year? Perhaps she will tour with Don for June and July, he will go do California with the Eagles in August and then he will team back up with Stevie? Perhaps she means she is doing more Vegas gigs? (I was told she has signed for a semi permanent engagement there by several people, not including the May shows, lastly Caesars when I called about tickets) Perhaps she has some benefits or private shows scheduled throughout the fall where she will need a band? I just do not remember her saying or implying she was touring as a solo act after this Don gig. I would much rather have that cause I cannot stand his music or his stage presense but..I am not buying it completely until I hear it from her. Did I miss this?
As for tickets...you are going to be completing with Eagles fans for these seats and Don's tickets are usually expensive. I doubt there will be more available seats do to the lack of love from 'some' Stevie fans. More difficulty in getting good seats, more money for the seat and less Stevie.

Thanks for the info about publishing rights..it is fascinating. When you say MJ bought the Beatles catalog therefore McCartney lost his rights...did Stevie sell her catalog? Or does she lose some of those rights when she signs publishing over to Sony/BMi as Macman described?
It seems so odd that her intellectual property can just be used ....I remember that guy who has "Let's get ready to rumble" being really ticked and suing someone who tried to use something on a show that was similar. I guess that is different somehow than songs. I would love for someone to explain the part of DR when Lindsey is talking about being paid for the songs. I was left very confused when he said he would only be paid for two or three songs...who decides which songs they are going to pay for?
