Default Songs that remind you of stuff.

Go this idea from the "what are you listening to" thread. Are there songs that, when you hear them, you immediately think of something: a movie it was in, a time in your life, a place you've been...

"Sunshine of Your Love" and the piano ending of "Layla" make me think of the movie Goodfellas. I so f*cking love that movie with a passion.

"The Sign" by Ace of Base reminds me of my trip to FL that I took after finishing LPN school in 94. It was all over the radio (and not in a good way.)

"Jealousy" by Gin Blossoms makes me think of this guy I made out with all night long at a friend's party right after I broke up with my crappy ex. Incredible kisser - the make-out guy, not the ex.

"Reflections" by The Supremes reminds me of the TV show China Beach (it was the theme song.)

"It's Your Love" by Faith & Tim brings me back to my hubby's best friends' wedding 3 years ago.

"It Takes Two" by Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock (hehehe) takes me right back to Regal Roller Rink, circa 1988. Oh, if only I could go back to the days of white skates with pink wheels, tight jeans, blue eyeshadow, frosted pink lipstick & big hair. And cigarettes - lots & lots of cigarettes.

I"m sure I have more, but the one i always think of is that song from Laura Brannigan (self control?).
I heard it the summer I was in my first year in All Stars, (older cool girls, so I heard things I wouldn't normally hear) And one time after practice we were all riding down from the field to the parking lot in the back of a pickup , everyone singing "WOAH OH OH!!! WHOA OH OH!!!!" really loud...

Good one! "Another One Bites the Dust" reminds me of my 1st grade bus ride home (must have been 1980 or 81.) All the 6th grade kids that sat in the back used to sing it every day.

Ah, yes. I vaguely remember.... Oh, we're the same age! I love that!

I'm back in elementary school every time I hear Carly Simon's "Coming Around Again," and further back whenever I hear Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel." (Though I'm not sure of the release dates; it's just that I was a Michael Jackson fan before I was a Carly fan).

Whenever I hear Ani DiFranco's "She Says," I think of my coming out in the summer of 2003.

When I hear Stevie's "Gate and Garden," I'm brought back to a tumultuous almost-romantic relationship I had with a Christian fundamentalist homophobe who will probably never admit that she's a lesbian.

The whole "Green Album" reminds me of the same person, too, because she used to play it around me a lot.

FM's "Only Over You" reminds me of this ridiculous crush I had a year ago. Same goes for "Everywhere."
REM's "Nightswimming" (one of my fave songs of all time) reminds me of when we used to have a pool in our yard at home, which we couldn't seem to keep up and gave up on.

Stevie's "Everyday" and FM's "Landslide" take me back to the first times I ever heard or saw Stevie and I fell in love with her voice.

Barenaked Ladies' "Pinch Me," The Cardigans' "Losers," matchbox twenty's "Back 2 Good," Filter's "Take a Picture" and that damn "I Need to Know"' song by Marc Anthony remind me of high school.

And that's all I can think of right now.

I remember in 8th grade, me and my best friend would always hang at her house, be stupid, (her parents owned a winery, it was a pretty cool place) lounge around all day, and listen to Terence Trent D'Arby and Tracy Chapman, and UB40, Eurythmics, and Midnight Oil. And when her mom took us places, Graceland was often in the tape player in the car. I guess that's more of stuff reminding me of a song rather than the other way around, but oh well. Uh...those artists remind me of funny friends and doing stupid stuff?

That's so odd. I was just thinking about something really similar the other day.

Whenever I hear "Get Back" by the Beatles, I think of my grandmother. Her name was Loretta, and she used to LOVE that song. She used to dance around the house yelling "Get back, Loretta!" God, I miss her. I also think of her when I hear "A Long December," by the Counting Crows. Actually, I bawl like a baby when I hear that song. She was dying in the hospital when it was out, actually, that December- and there was one line in that stupid song that still kills me- "the smell of hospitals in winter, and the feeling that it's all a lot of oysters and no pearls."

"In A Little While" by U2 brings me right back to the first months of being in love in my last relationship. It was our song. Silly.

If I hear either "Freshmen" by the Verve, or "Truly Madly Deeply" by Savage Garden (shut up!) I think of my friend Joe, who I haven't spoken to in five years. He loved "Freshmen," and we were the right age then. And "Truly Madly Deeply"- I remember driving around in my mom's minivan (hee!) with him, and it came on the radio, and we both just started unabashedly singing it- no shame. We really let loose. Oh, my god. How embarassing. We ended up driving around for an hour trying to find a store that was open so we could buy the CD, then we drove around all night listening to it. How completely lame is that? Maybe it's more weird than lame, since I was the world's biggest Clash, Radiohead, & Sex Pistols fan at the time, and he was rocking goth crap like Rasputina.

I also think of him when I hear the Dance version of "Go Your Own Way" and Cake's cover of "I Will Survive." His girlfriend dumped him one summer, and I remember holding his head on my lap for hours while he bawled like a little bitch, listening to those two songs on repeat. Hee.

And then there's silly stuff. I realized last week that anytime I hear "I Shall Believe" by Sheryl Crow, I get chills because of the association I have with it with Alias. There was this scene that broke my heart between Sydney and Vaughn where it was playing, and even though I actually dislike them intensely, it was so emotional, and every time I hear it, I think of that moment and get all upset.

Gosh, I have so many.

OMG there are SO many...here are a few:

Ordinary World - Duran Duran; reminds me of 6th/7th grade and this assistant band director I had a MAD crush on from the time I was 12 till...well lets just say if he asked me to hop into his bed I wouldn't say no

Wherever you will Go - The Calling; it reminds me of Love Actually - the movie

Sex and Candy-Marcy Playground; everytime I hear that song it takes me back to the first time I heard it - it was in the middle of the day (I was skipping school) I was riding in a friend's car - the person I was dating was there I felt young, alive, in love and FREE...

It's good to be King - Tom Petty; reminds me of my friend Shannon - her dad was SURE she was on drugs because she liked this song and it has the line, "it's good to get high and never come down"

Ok - I could go on forever - but right now my dog is staring longingly at her leash so I think it's time to take her for a run

When I hear the song "Never" by Heart I think of how my little friends and I would roller skate to that song at the roller rink.

Exclamation WAY too many to list

Humpty Dance by Digital Underground reminds me of hanging out with my friend and we would stay up until almost dawn watching The Box. We always wanted to call in and request videos, but couldn't. LOL

Any New Kids song takes me back to when I was 12-14 years old and every made fun of me. I remember they had a lipsyinching contest at the mall and my friend and I dressed up in all NKOTB stuff (and I mean, we were covered head to toe because the mall said whoever wore the most stuff won a prize...well, we didn't. ). I chickened out, but she got up there with 2 other gals we met that day.

I remember seeing the video back in the day for True Blue by Madonna on my dad's satellite TV (either MuchMusic or MTV, can't remember). I freakin' loved that song!

Also, I remember hearing/seeing the video for Van Halen's Jump and Twisted Sister's We're Not Gonna Take it...those songs remind me of my cousins who were sesly into heavy metal back then.

Eternal Flame by the Bangles reminds me of my friend, Stephanie, we LOVED that dang song. Another song that reminds me of Stephanie was Mariah Carey's Can't Let Go...she would blast the dang song as we drove by Jason Littlejohn's house because she had a crush on him. Sheebus. LOL

Sigh....I miss the 80's.

"Baker Street" and "Shadow Dancing" reminds me of my military tour when I lived in Pensacola, FL. Spent most of my summer evenings at the clubs dancing the night away and having a great time being 21 yrs old.

The Chicago song, "25 Or 6 To 4" reminds me of all those basketball and football games being a cheerleader.

Any Bee Gees song reminds me of my honeymoon LOVE those guys!!

Anytime I hear "Stand Back" by Stevie, it makes me want to get up and dance. Also, a great song when you are exercising and hitting a punching bag
