Context is a wonderful thing. Go find the thread where we had that discussion and link to it so that people can read it if you want to bring it up, dear. Your summary oversimplified what I said.

I am so not wasting my time doing that. But you can feel free to.

In any event, if what I said is 100% untrue, you can always state so now

Nope, I'm all set. I wasted enough time searching through the Pope thread to see where people were "beating" on him and your claim turned out to be unfounded.

Not untrue, just misleading in the context in which you said it. If I recall correctly, Hillary began a discussion about when it was okay to disrespect people who didn't warrant any respect and I said something along the lines of it isn't okay to disrespect anyone, but we're all human and we all do it. I used an example of when people try to shove God down my throat, I sometimes say things that are very disrespectful to them regarding their religious beliefs.

When I read that thread initially, I took some of the comments to be mean spirited. Once people explained that they were not, I apologized for the misinterpretation. So, nice try.

Actually, I remember you were more general than that. But, since neither one of us wants to look it up - so be it. Personally, I think if you knew you were correct here, you would look it up in a heartbeat

Well, there's nothing I can say to that. If I was going to meanspirited about the Pope, I wouldn't have bit my tongue so hard in that thread. Instead, for once, I took the high road.

More general? Hardly. I said the exact same thing.

"Feelings and actions of disrespect depend entirely on the person and the situation. I can be quite disrespectful, I'd never attempt to say otherwise. There are times when people get on my goat so much that I actively try to disrespect them. Take religious people, for example. I have such a disdain for religion that when people talk to me about it or tell them how they'll pray to God for this or that, sometimes I'll take glee in offending them. But I'm only human and I'm not perfect."

Happy, dear? I think it would be as offensive as you make it out to be if I hadn't acknowledged such behavior as wrong and disrespectful. But I suppose you only remember what you want to remember.

Nope. He's talking about a thread from a month ago where I said that when people get all up in my face with their godspeak (which I find to be disrespectful), I'll be disrespectful back to them. Doesn't make it right by any means, but at least I can recognize such behavior within myself.

In the statement

you hardly limit your glee to people shoving God down your throat as you suggested earlier in this thread. Rather, you specifically refer to a generic "religious people," your disdain for "religion," and that you take "glee" in offending people who merely "talk to me about it or tell them how they'll pray to God for this or that" - that is not the same thing as shoving their God down your throat

Well, the larger point was related to the narrowminded comment.

I'm all tuckered out from debating all of this but wanted to point one thing out. Spirituality is not all about the possibility of the existence of a supreme being. For me personally, it certainly isn't all about that, and I wish you wouldn't oversimplify it.

He cannot. As he just reiterated, he has a general disdain for religion - apparently all of it - which is his right.

Also, I agree that organized religion is not spirituality - though they can coexist, albeit rarely so IMO.

I don't know why I'm getting into this, but I have to say that I agree with Jason. In reference to that particular quote, I think it's very unfair to "religious people" in general, as we all know they are not all the same. And some people do not mean to condescend when they discuss their beliefs. It's a long way from, "I believe such and such" to "I need you to see the absolute truth."

Well, I personally don't approve of organized religion, but there are a lot of people who are Christians and spiritual people on this board who don't actually participate in organized religion. All of that being said, it is his right to hate religion as you said, so I don't want to act like I have all the answers and I think he needs to change, because I don't think that much of myself. I just think he's oversimplifying a lot of things.

Hm...had to step away from the Ledge for a while at work...but I really enjoyed these last few posts....I agree with you and Jason....good stuff being said...

I realize that there are people who have a real disdain for religion - any religion....and I totally understand that there are some wacked out Christians (and members of other religions) around...and they're going around giving us a bad name....but that exists in any group.

I've said that before though....but it's true - I've met some mean and hateful atheists...I don't hate ALL atheists or atheism as a result
