Talking Any Kiwis here? aka New Zealanders

Hey...I am trying to get financial aid at the moment to study abroad and have wanted to go to New Zealand for the last few years. Are there any New Zealanders who would be willing to help me out with questions, etc.?

It's amazing

I lived in Melbourne for a year or so and met so many new zealanders...

But not recently. I think they are all in London

Yeah evidently the native Maoris only make up about 10% of the population! whats up with that? Well I am going to try and get a study/work thing going by attending Massey Univ and then working part time to pay the rent.

Probably the same reason Natives are only 1.5% of America's population...

This is great. A friend of mine spent two years traveling the world and NZ was her favorite place. She actually married a Kiwi and brought him home with her. Then he made a new Kiwi friend here and her best friend married him! So I know two. I also used to work for one, the senior VP of marketing of my last company, unfortunately he is not a good representative, blech.

If you get to go enjoy it.

Apart from the fact that it's the most aesthetically beautiful country in the world (an opinion boarding on fact), I think the mentality over there is great...hmm although sometimes it backfires. If you're not completely humble then you mightn't enjoy the masses. Australians are very humble compared to Americans but it's known that Kiwis cannot even handle us. We're arrogant bullies in their view. Sometimes this isn't so great because although Australia is infamous for it's tall-poppy syndrome, New Zealand won't even let you get your foot in the door. Kiwis are also incredibly bitter about us and whilst we generally see it as friendly rivalry, I feel like a Pakistani in India when I'm over there. Scenes of the Haka sum up the response to my presence there. Ok so I generalise and exaggerate but you're not an evil Australian so you'll be fine anyway.

That came off sounding more negative than positive. It's a great place and it's true, Kiwis are better than Aussies. Apologies to myself.
So Lux, are you saying that you consider yourself an Aussie now?
Coz, I've been in the this part of Europe 20 years now and never thought of myself as anything other than a Kiwi. Just wondering.Never picked up a foreign accent either, still kept the old twang

Default Well,

The Welsh are somewhat the same towards the English... I've encountered so much dislike and genuine hatred from the Welsh in my time towards English friends of mine that I won't visit Wales myself, which is a shame because the scenery is great..

Funnily enough I encountered two retired Aussies visiting the UK today, when I mentioned my mother was in Sydney and Cairns last month they were really nice and friendly. I then made the grave mistake of saying she then went to NZ for 3 weeks and loved it, especially the scenery... That seemed to piss them off rather...

I personally love Australians having been brought up on neighbours

I spent a couple of years in japan, and a couple in the uk and we are very close siblings, nz and aus.. all the rivalry is based on nz inferiority complex... being so damn small and all....

Oh Lux...how sad for you, people can be so cruel, when your'e a kid! Guess you did the right thing and kinda blended in as best you could.I never realised the so-called "friendly" rivallry was that bad, and I have Aussie relatives..hmmm..
Your'e right though, going abroad at an "advanced" (hahahahaha) age was reatively easy although my accent was a great source of amusement for quite a while In general, the Brits love Antipodeans and if you mention this, they're away with relation stories (like you know all their uncles/aunties who happen to live there! )
Madformac...I'm glad your Mum survived her hairy driving story and enjoyed the scenery

Yeah, I was told by one of the financial aid advisors: "You'll be either the butt of playful ridicule or fascination from the people of New Zealand because of your southern accent." It's not twangy like Tennesseans, but I DID grow up in south.

I would expect the latter option to apply from most NZers, however from the general Uni pop, it could be the former
Whatever...you'll be fine, have a great time.
