You know, I never did read it, keep me posted as to whether you liked the whole thing when you finish. I hope you enjoy it!

Then you get to his side of the block and the facades of the buildings shape up and things begin to look nicer. Then you get to the waterfront where the gadgillionaires live.

The book talked about Whitey Bulger too, who is still on the run. It was interesting to see what someone from the neighborhood's perspective was on him. He is an Irish mobster, he was the Irish godfather, I suppose, of Southie. The author's brother worked for him as did many many others.

And the forced bussing, that ruined the neighborhood because all of the teens dropped out of school, they feared for their life if they went.
That's too bad, about the forced bussing... But that Whitey Bulgar things sound really interesting, I've never heard of him!!! Course, you know we all love mob stories.... I'm Irish and Italian, I love them even more...

You have to read this book, Amber. I know you would really really like it. Southie is mostly Irish American. The author's name is Michael Patrick MacDonald. You dont' get much more Irish! He lost half his brothers to untimely deaths but it is still ultimately a triumphant story for him. His mother is sassy, she was known as the looker of the projects. She never left the house unless she was in spike heels!

Whitey Bulger has been a fugative for 10 years. He was a big FBI informant for years so they would look the other way while he did his dealings (and paid them off). He had a vast network of crooked cops/agents on his side keeping him in business. There isn't a lot of detail about that in the book but it talks about how he basically owned Southie and that folks thought of him as a hero. It is interesting to learn their perspective, why they would see a crooked mobster as a hero. Very interesting.

Oh my, you can't go a week without hearing about that ****er in this state. The Boston Globe has a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE database just for him, have you ever checked it out? Thank gawd his asshole brother quit as president at UMASS. I met him *once* at a college assembly and he was...weird.

I know, him being president of that college was so weird. Since we hear about Whitey all the time I figured Amber would say, "Oh yeah, that guy, I heard about him, but I guess not!" Apparently Boston is not the center of the universe.

Re-reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

I don't think ANY book has ever moved me like this one.

I think I'll read that. I just ran out of book. And by that, I mean I read an entire series, and they haven't written the next one.

LOL - isn't that the worst? I've been waiting FOREVER for the next book in the LOTR series

Perks is very Catcher in the Rye...not sure if you'd like it Amber, but then again, I don't know. All I know is I really related to it.
