I've always liked this song, even the TISL demo. Yes, there are cliche lyrics. So? It's catchy. I love Stevie's vocal on it, she sounds so young. The spacey production really works as well.

I would have rather had this than Destiny Rules, which I think is horrid and her worst vocal in years.

I also love the Wall of Sound TD, and prefer it to the SYW version by far.

I would much rather have Not Make Believe on the album than Silver Girl. I love the production! I agree, her vocals on the first verse are very nasally and for a long while, it turned me off from the song. After I got over that initial shock, I really started enjoying the song and feel like it fits in so well with her TISL and SYW songs. I like the theme she has going on.
The "sometimes it was too heavy" line is so so..it is very Stevie so I can deal with it.
The one part I really do not get is "they both rushed by, like a thief in the night, taking no prisoners, just like the first time"...(sorry if those are not the EXACT words) What on earth is she referring to? I understand the Dickens reference and the "taking no prisoners" line always reminds me of Peacekeeper. I just do not really understand that line.."taking no prisoners..just like the first time". Maybe I just do not get it.

I agree with you. In fact of friend of mine even burned a copy of SYW and replaced Silver Girl with NMB!

It's actually "too-ew heavy".

I adore this song. It has a very underproduced song to it....like the music was recorded in a cave. I dunno if I would have liked it on the album. The flow from LMZ/NL to NMB makes all the different. It's still up there on my list as a favorite.

Was there a FM demo of this song? I only have versions marked as TISL demos. Did Lindsey play and produce on that one?

This thread made me haul it out and have another listen.

Still not a fave. It has a couple of lines I like - but overall doesn't do it for me. But would I pick it over Silver Girl??? In a heartbeat, baby.

the wall of sound version:

* ...has no friggin' fragment of "wall of sound" in it
* ...has some nice strummed guitars extra but totally lacks the brilliant bridge of the albumversion
* ...does not stand for long because the song is too repetative without the bridge

Lindsey's outtrovocal rocks, though.

Not Make Believe is ten times better then Silver Girl. I'm gonna burn me one with that switch. Good idea.

I actually liked this song more than some others she had on 'Say You Will.' I love the music and Stevie's voice on this song. It sounds totally different than anything I've heard from Stevie...I love it.

"Silver Girl" has grown on me considerably, but I'd still switch it out for "Not Make Believe."

"NMB" is catchy and spritely, and has a terrific vocal.
I love the story she tells in the lyrics, and the use of the Dickens reference actually enchances it for me, as it instantly conjures a sense of grandeur.

Oh come on ChiliD, that production never ever has that Phil Spector "space" in it. It's just "bricked full" That's something else then the lightness and depth of the good old real wall of sound. I only know it as an MP3 but even then.... If Lindsey ever came close I think you can hear it in Someone's Gonna Change You're Mind. Nice joke, though.
