Obsessing on the Tusk album right now, and found myself wondering if they used a "whisper vocal" on Brown Eyes. This is something The Doors did on Riders On The Storm to make for an eerie atmosphere...there is a second vocal track which is entirely whispered. Brilliant, really. There are clearly two tracks of Christine's regular vocal, but it just feels like there's that little something else there. If I listen very closely, I think I can actually hear it, but it's so subtle that it's more of a feeling. Since I've been listening so closely, I feel it's Lindsey doing the whisper. The way the end of some of the words are enunciated sounds more like Lindsey to me (i.e. "s" 's slightly drawn out, etc.). Does anyone else get this vibe, or can anyone who is more technically inclined verify that they used this technique? It certainly adds to the wonderfully mysterious atmosphere of this song.

Brown Eyes is perfection!
Like Justin said, there is a prominent b/ground vocal in the left field (I'd agree that it's Lindsey), and he is singing in a soft falsetto very close to the mic, hence the 'whisper track' you're wondering about. I think the Tusk Bonus Disc demo is even better - while the vocals are better mixed in the final cut, there is a lot more happening instrumentally in the demo. It probably wouldn't much of a song without the lush vocals, and I guess they realised this and really went to town on the sound of the vocals. Last edited by DownOnRodeo; 03-01-2005 at 06:17 AM.. |
