I love praying mantises. I love most insects. I've always been an insect person. Have to touch, have to bring inside, scare the hell out of everyone else. But there are some I can't stand, and the walking stick is on the top of my list. I'm telling you, if you bother those things, they can spray this awful stuff at you, and right in your eye if you're in the right place. And that stings for hours. Also, they're always screwing. I never see just one walking stick. I can hardly find other lesbians but the walking sticks are constantly doing it on the front porch. They can all go to hell. Bastards.

Omigaw, I forgot that one! but really, I suppose we could go on and on. To me, there is hardly a far side that is not funny!
Me and my sixth grade friend would always bust up about one with a poodle baying on the edge of a cliff. I forgot the whole gist, but.... It was something like..."suddenly, Fifi realized that..."

Never seen a walking stick. Except in pictures. Love mantises though. I was terrified of them as a child, especially the babies... man are they quick! But I finally forced myself to get over the fear and held an adult once. Very quickly went from terror to fascination. Now I think they're adorable!

I've never actually seen a walking stick in real life, I was thinking of the bugs that look like leaves, and also, therefore, a bit like praying mantises. That's cool you're not weirded out by bugs, but I can never go there. It's strange, too, because i've literally probably watched hundred's of shows about bugs, and familiarity is supposed to dissuade fear, but... I remember one time when i was 3, my mom was going to softball practice, and we had to walk across a massive field of spring clover/bees. She just walked across, but i looked down and became frozen, could not move, and started crying as my mom was about 50 yards ahead. My mom was like "Come ON, AMBER, just walk through! Geesh!!" and i rarely disobeyed her, especially when that tone came into play, but i was literally petrified frozen... heh, she eventually walked back and got me, I think...

Yeah, unfortunately, I think walking sticks are kind of similar to praying mantises. (See "spawnofsatan" photo). But the worst a praying mantis has ever done is bite me, and I asked for it. Besides, they look so wonderfully pensive and sophisticated. Anyway, I can see how the field of bees is scary, especially when you're young. I always just walked through, but I really don't know how I did it without getting stung. Oh, another useless bug I forgot about and have no sympathy for--horse flies. Those things are scary.

I couldn't agree more! I remember the first time I saw a praying mantis I just didn't know what to think! They're crazy! But, strange as it is, I ran into a huge adult one and handed it a small bug to eat. I had it in my hand and the mantis looked at me and then look at my hand and then took the bug out and ate it like a pig. It was so funny.

Omigod, at the stick bug, *shudder*...Also, one time when i was in 3rd grade, a wasp landed on my lunch, and i called the yard duty over (who apparently hated me) cause i was scared, and she flicked it right onto my arm, and it stung me!!!! I swear, she aimed for my arm. And another time, when i was 3, I remember I was standing on our porch in my rubbers, and all of a sudden, millions of ants started crawling up my shoes!!! and getting on me!!! *shudder*. Maybe i've just had bad experiences with bugs. The one bug I'm not as scared of is Spiders. Sure, the ones from Australia that are deadly freak me out, but in general spiders are my "best bug" I think i like them, too, cause they eat other bugs.

Wasp stings suck, huh? The one time I got stung by one I had stepped on it when I was barefoot walking through the front yard. (Dumb move, huh?) And I also hate it when ants all of a sudden appear all over me. I never see them coming. I've never been bitten by fire ants but I hear that's pretty bad, so I hope I'm spared that. I agree that spiders are cool. Sometimes the large ones scare me but I just don't bother them. There was one in my dorm room about a week ago, and he was pretty big. I was just going to let him do what he wanted because I couldn't see any sense in bothering him. But he was crawling all over my walls. And he got on my Stevie wall. He proceeded to crawl over every picture of Stevie I had. It was like it was deliberate. (The wall is completely covered with pictures of her, too). Then he stopped at one of those pictures in which her breasts are practically hanging out of whatever she's wearing. I was like, Oh please. Now he's groping Stevie! I picked him up and put him outside.

I still bring bugs into my classes sometimes, like I did in elementary school. I've yet to grow up. It freaks people out when I'm in a class with tables rather than desks and there are about six of us to a table and I come in and promptly put a praying mantis down on the table. A few years ago, my teacher asked me to take it outside because it was freaking her out. One time I had a really cute tent caterpillar in English class and I named it after my English teacher. When I announced to her that it had the same name she did, she was just a little disturbed.

Omigod, your stories tonight are hella funny!!!! "The Bug That Molested Stevie!" That should be a movie.
I was stung on the foot by bees twice, on my foot, it hurt, but not that bad. I submit that my fear of bugs is more about the creepy way they look than anything more rational. I'm glad you bring bugs to class, it is cool. And you made me remember that i loved caterpillars as a child! I'm really glad some people like bugs, and i wish i could, but i just can't. Even with how bleeding heart animal lover that i am, it just can't happen. Though I think they are fascinating, and understand their value in the scheme of things, and all that.

Once, in a place I was renting (a mother-in-law place under the main home) The landlady had chickens, and I saw two chickens fighting over a potatobug one had found. they kept stealing it from each other and I think they ended up tearing it in half....chickens are ruthless! chickens are also very funny, especially the bard rocks, they are a HOOT!

I love caterpillars. My favorite is one that I've never run into, actually. It just looks cute in pictures and I love it. It's the Woolly Bear caterpillar. It looks soft and fluffy, though I know it's probably not particularly fluffy. Yeah, and The Bug that Molested Stevie could make for a really funny (and awful) low budget film. I'm glad you liked my stories.

I think the walking stick (or stick insects, as some call them) are rampant in Louisiana. I'm in a suburban area and there are many, but I bet there are even more in rural areas. Ugh. Y'all don't have too many in Cali? Glad you liked the Potato Bug website. And thanks for the chicken story; I had no idea chickens were that entertaining. I don't think I've ever spent any time around any. Man, I need some pets of some kind. I wish my parents weren't so opposed and the university didn't forbid it in the dorms. Oh, and I meant to say--I've only seen a scorpion once, and it kind of scared me. I watched it walk around and that was interesting because it was new to me, but I was really scared to do anything else because I was afraid it would pinch and/or sting me! And I do admit that it wasn't all that attractive, either.

Oh, I would love to see some foreign bugs! I've been looking for field guides on Amazon for bugs on other continents, and so far I've only found one for African insects. I'd love just to see the pictures because I hear they're so different other places, and significantly bigger. I get all excited about big bugs, especially those monstrous dragonflies and full-grown cicadas. Australia has cool bugs, too? That would be a great field guide to find somewhere. I would be screaming about the roach, too. Those are never pleasant. I would be wise and stay away from the deadly spider, too. Do y'all have gigantic stink bugs in Australia? I was young when I saw one for the first time, and I had not yet learned that I can't touch every insect or arachnid I see. I was with my Dad and I picked it up and held it and then thought to ask, "What's this called?" He said, "A stink bug," and then I put it down and noticed that my hand smelled pretty bad. Okay, so I should quit now, since I could go on forever about bugs.

Sounds interesting. Big bugs rock. We should trade places sometime. I'll attempt to deal with your parents for awhile and play with the bugs while you put up with all backwoods imbeciles around here, the outrageous sizes of foods and drinks at restaurants, and the unhealthy selections of everything at the supermarkets. What do ya think?

What a long ass thread.... look at everything I miss when I have a bridge game weekend.

1) I think all guns should be banned, except for law enforcement and military personnel.

2) I think all hunting should be banned. Yes, I am a "big-city" person, but I can dream can't I?

3) I wish the green party would win more elections.

4) Potato bugs and praying mantises are disgusting.

5) Amber, you used "irregardless" incorrectly.

6) Most of the "republican celebrities" listed at the beginning of this thread are idiots, so it doesn't surprise me that they are republican.

7) Four months ago, Dissention was a meat-eating, Democratic heterosexual. Now he's a vegetarian, Green homosexual. Change is good.

8) I would like to join Lux and Jason in the gutter.

9) If all the "conservationist" republicans hadn't killed off all the wolves, bears, coyotes and mountain lions we wouldn't be having a deer overpopulaton.

10) I readily admit that I am a hypocrite for being against hunting all the while eating meat purchased from a supermarket. Hey, nobody's perfect.

11) Anyone who thinks that their time on earth is "passing through" should just get on with it and pass over to the other side already and leave this place for those of us who consider it our home and want to take care of it.

12) Venison is really gamey and I don't like its taste.

13) I think Cabaret is really hammy and too over the top.
