Default Redeeming qualities of songs you hate

OK, go back & look at your Stevie disliked/hated tunes list & find at least one line that you like from each song. There has to be one, right?

RAL - Rock & roll ballerina, where else would she go?

I Sing For the Things - Have you touched the soul of someone, did the fear inside you make you turn & run?

HAEWAFY - Poet...priest of nothing...legend

Whole Lotta Trouble - and the angel said "well, you must have had a dream and you remember it" till the dream followed through

Fire Burning - so still there is a fire that no one sees

Alice - you cannot tell a gypsy that she's no longer a member

I Still Miss Someone {hard one, but if I must pick} i miss those arms that held me, baby when all the love was there

Desert Angel - Something broke the stars into pieces AND no black clouds, just the faces of you

Kick It - well I loved you more than life itself (nothing like forever more)

Thousand Days - well I can see the trouble, the sun is here today and I requested a storm

Every Day - {ugh} don't give me visions to explain

I Miss You - the invisible girl, that was my name, she walks in & walks out

Paper Doll - You'd prefer to be just a little bit in and out of love with me, and not to scream and shout

Freedom - morning star of eveil hit me, cut me like a knife

I'm not including Street Angel, which I have decided to remove from my disliked list.

I just realized that if Diss does this, his post will be reeeeeaaaaallllllly long...

I'll get carpal tunnel syndrome before the post is finally written and finished.

The Nightmare: This is not the world. This is not the world

Alice: Like Alice through the looking glass, she used to know who she was

Desert Angel: Not one line.

Docklands
"Sometimes I feel like I'm in a foreign land
And there's a mirror I'm looking through"

Jane
"She could look a challenge...right between the eyes"

Desert Angel
"Something broke the stars...into pieces"

Two Kinds Of Love
"A great temptation to have even started
Well don't you know, as you walk on by
That great temptations never really die..."

Sometimes it's a Bitch
"It's not what's in the mirror...but what's left inside"

Unconditional Love
"When all the dreams that I believe
Are in your eyes
Don't you see at last..."

Romy

Interesting to note that many of these lyrics weren't written by Stevie at all, and the ones that she did write are mainly from her non-sensical Rock A Little period where she was just recycling old material and piecing together non-sequiturs from her journals.

The Nightmare: none- this songs has no lyrics, they're all ripped off from her other material.

Greta: none- horrible.

Love Changes: none- it reads like a bad Richard Marx song

Docklands: none

That Made Me Stronger: none, really.

Cry Wolf: none

Love's a Hard Game to Play:

"The problem here is not my fear
The trouble is you can't convince yourself
For tonight, let's lose the past
Make love last
Put our worries up on the shelf
"

Mirror, Mirror: none- the song makes no sense at all.

Sister Honey:

"Can we still be friends
the answer's always yes
Even best intentions turn around one day
"

Paper Doll:

"And even if you did miss me
You never let me know
You'd prefer to be just a little bit
In and out of love with me
"

Some Become Strangers:

"Did it have to be so easy to live without it
I was hoping to remember you with just a smile
Now the memory of giving you is giving out
"

Sometimes It's a Bitch: none- it's waaay too cheezzzzy

Unconditional Love: none- just awful.

Just Like a Woman: I like the song, but not the performance

Thrown Down: none- the main reason I don't like this song is because of the lyrics. I think the music is great.

Imperial Hotel: none- too much third-person overload.

Sorcerer:

"I'm tired
I'm thirsty
I'm wild-eyed
In my misery
"

How Still My Love: none- there's really not much to this song, just repetitive nothingness.

I've been saying that for years. It's incomprehensible jibberish.

Many times for me, the redeeming qualities of a song are in what Stevie does with it vocally. If she can sing insipid lyrics with passion, it's a redeeming quality.

Welcome to the Room.... Sara - I like the way she sings "Oh, I see - welcome to the room Sara!" That's about it.

When I See You Again - I like the touch of having Lindsey sing the last part alone.

Sister Honey - "Can we still be friends? / The answer's always yes"

The Nightmare - I guess I kind of like the way she sings "Blinded by the light of the day", even if it is trite. Also "this is not the world, this is not the world"

Docklands - "sometimes I feel like I'm in a foreign land, and there's a mirror I'm looking through"

Races Are Run - I like the way she and Lindsey sound on "oooh, oooh, yeah" after the chorus

Love Is Dangerous - "Maybe it's my crossroads / maybe this is mine"

The Second Time - It's been so long since I've actually listened to this that I can't think of anything that struck me as good about it. There's probably something if I went back and listened to it again, but it's not worth it.

Silver Girl - "Sometimes she was just an actress / but you'll never really know" and the way she sings "You cannot see her soul" overlapping at the VERY end.

Illume - the verse where she kicks it up a notch "What I SAW on this journey is what LEGENDS are made of, I CANNOT pretend that the heartache falls away!!"

Gate and Garden - I guess the way she sings "Do I love you / well, I always did" although it's not that great, really.

Nothing Ever Changes - I like the bridge: "I can turn all your music on /
I can make you feel alive / I am gone but I'm never gone from you / It was just the first time / Come back!" I also like the way she sings "nothing ever changes... not it doesn't" at the end. This is song is actually OK, I guess.

Sable on Blond - "Something you don't touch / Because it hurts too much" and "Do you hold that dream in your hands each night"

Imperial Hotel - the chorus of this is OK. I like the way she sings "at the Imperial" near the end, with a little extra vigor

If I Were You - another song where I like the chorus alright.

Long Way to Go - I like the line "have fun, tell the world" and the way she sings "Oh, you are fading out"

Ghosts - "So long ago I was an innocent / It had nothing to do with age / One day they were lovers...one day they were friends / There was nothing else to say"

Fire Burning - "I understand your position / I withdraw my decision"

Alice - I like the chorus OK and the way she sings "this is ME talkin' to you"

Doing the Best That I Can - I like the way she sings "It's alright baby, I'm doing the best that I can" and "I didn't win or lose...I just threw the cards"

Sometimes It's a Bitch - "I tried to dance with what life had to hand me / My partner's been pleasure, my partner's been pain"

Desert Angel - I like the way she sings "this has always been my sanctuary" as well as "You're on the other side of the world" and "Where is my husband / where has he gone? / And where is my father? / Where is my son?"

Greta - the way she sounds on "Another lady, another time /Another heartbroken state of mind" and "Where will the kings go, where will the kings go now?"

Listen to the Rain - I like the way she sounds on the line "Listen to the rain" itself

Love Is Like a River - "I called it 'worth it'"

Just Like a Woman - eh, I guess the chorus is OK.

Kick It - the way she sings "I think that is the meaning of love / And I prefer to kick it"

Thousand Days - despite the fact that I don't like this song, I LOVE this line "But I like some kind of TIME/LIFE edition" - great comparison! I also like "And as all archangels do to you / And as all arch enemies will finally do to you, too," "Well, the sun is here today, now, and I requested a storm", and "And if the sun warms up the rain / And the rain puts out the sun."

One More Big Time Rock'n'Roll Star - "Undercover music lover" and the way she sings "When it rains, it pours / When there's no one at the door / Yes, he did send me flowers"

Rhiannon (Enchanted Version) - Stevie going faster near the end kind of gives it a little extra drama - it's hard to praise this version, though. lol

That Made Me Stronger
- "Well, once more I tell the shadows of my soul to stay back"

Every Day - that little pause after "it cures the silence" - nice touch

This was a very cool idea, Paula!

I Miss You-Nope, I can't find anything I like. I hate it that much.

When I See You Again-Well...at least she puts a lot of emotion into it.

Desert Angel-"Something broke the stars...into pieces"

After the Glitter Fades-"We all chase something and maybe this is a dream" (really, I should like this one more than I do--I'll work on that)

The Highwayman-"Heartbeats on the wind" (It's a heartbeat mention and I can hardly argue with that).

Rock a Little- "Then you knew her...funny little dancer"

The Nightmare-I have to agree that everything good in this song is taken from something else that's much better.

I Sing for the Things-all of this is good except for the way her voice sounds

Alice-"I'm going back to the other side of the mirror"

Two Kinds of Love-um, I can't find any lyrics I like

Cry Wolf-"If you're feeling humble...don't look back"

Sable on Blond-actually, the lyrics are great but I've never been able to get into it (another one I'll have to work on, like ATGF)

Love's a Hard Game to Play-"The problem here is not my fear / The trouble is you can't convince yourself"

Too Far From Texas-"And I can't show my love, and I can't stop it"

Fall From Grace-"I choose to be quietly discreet / If that is his desire"

Love Is-"You know that I loved you then...Oh well..."

Goodbye Baby-I love the song, I just don't like the way she sang it on SYW

Thousand Days-"Why does the greatest love become the greatest pain?" and all those great lines that sounded better in "Whole Lotta Trouble"

Free Fallin'-"I want to write your name in the sky"

Reconsider Me-um, it's all basically the same--not much to speak of

Somebody Stand By Me-"I stand in one place a different name -- a different face"

Gold-"My heart beatin' time with the breathing" (I'm not sure what that means but it sounds cool)

These are three of my favorites. I think Sable on Blonde is her best vocal on TWH album.

Ehhhh - it's OK. I much prefer it live. The album version does nothing for me (as opposed to Gypsy, which is so much better on the album than live )

You'll come running back to me when youneed your next bootleg fix!

These are great songs! I don't get why they're marginally redeemable.

Default Goodbye Baby

I LOVE Stevie's "Goodbye Baby" vocal on Say You Will. At first I was like unsure, but after a few listens, it has became one of my most favorite vocals from her. The emotion and pure honesty in her voice gets me every time. The opening lines of the song sound so mournful and so wistfu and that all comes from her voice for me, not the lyrics. of course the lyrics take it over the top as far as sad songs.
As for the topic, I have to think about it. There are not that many songs of Stevie's that I really dislike. (Silver Girl..hurl)
