happened, Later that same night (late April 19/Early morning April 20) two well known "celebrities" went out of their way to make unscheduled/unannounced appearrances to give from their own pockets (One was a musician who collected money at his show on April 19th and rode on his bus overnight from Iowa to hand deliver the collected money).

Neither were mentioned on national network, But the local stations interviewed 'em and both of 'em did not want any glory for what they did.

Linkin Park Creates Disaster Aid Charity

Thursday, December 30, 2004

With memories of a successful summer tour in Southeast Asia still fresh in their minds, the members of Linkin Park are spearheading an effort to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami that have devastated the region. With an initial contribution of $100,000 by the rock act, the newly created organization Music for Relief will directly support American Red Cross programs to provide immediate help and long-term support to those in need.

"We are fortunate to be in a position to help, but this needs to be a broader effort," guitarist Brad Delson says, saying the band will call on fans and peers to join the effort.

"If one of our fans can donate $10, then that's going to help... We are also going to appeal to our musical peers by asking them to donate as well," he adds. "The bottom line is the more we can do, and the quicker we can do it, the more lives we can save."

At deadline, news services were reporting more than 114,000 are confirmed dead in the wake of a tsunami that followed Sunday's 9.0 magnitude earthquake in the depths of the Indian Ocean, off of the coast of Sumatra.

Over the summer, Linkin Park played sold-out stadium shows in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. "The outpouring of emotion from our fans there was overwhelming," Delson admits. "It really affected us."

Linkin Park is no stranger to charity, having donated $500,000 to various charities throughout 2004, according to the band's label, Warner Bros. The group's official Web site includes an "Awareness" section, with links to such organizations as the International Child Abuse Network, the United Way and the Japanese American National Museum.

Delson describes the band's creation of Music for Relief as "our way of giving back to the people who so desperately need it."

Those interested in information about contributing to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, can visit the Music for Relief Web site at www.musicforrelief.org.

UK

Cardiff's Millennium Stadium is trying to stage a 'Live Aid' style concert to raise money for the Asian tsunami disaster appeal.

Stadium bosses are in talks with some of the UK's top performers to mount the charity gig on 22 January, but they are working against a tight deadline to get the massive charity gig organised in under three weeks.

"It's going to be tight," said stadium manager Paul Sergeant, adding a team of people from the stadium was working over the bank holiday to try to get the concert plan off the ground.

Talks were going on with "A list acts" including some from Wales to support the concert, said Mr Sergeant, although he refused to name possible acts.

AUST

The Australian entertainment community will rally together to help victims of the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami with an all-star concert and telethon set for Saturday (Jan. 8). Reach Out to Asia will feature performances from the likes of Kasey Chambers and "Australian Idol" winners Guy Sebastian and Casey Donovan in the Forecourt outside of the Sydney Opera House.

Members of five different Australian rock acts -- Jet vocalist Nic Cester, the Living End guitarist Chris Cheney, You Am I guitarist Dave Lane, Spiderbait drummer Mark "Kram" Maher and Dallas Crane bassist Pat Bourke -- will team up to create a one-off supergroup for the show. Noiseworks, the 1980s Jon Stevens-fronted rock act, is also planning to reunite specifically for the event.

Others set to perform include the Dissociatives (Silverchair's Daniel Johns and producer Paul Mac), Killing Heidi, Eskimo Joe, Alex Lloyd, the Whitlams, Scribe and Missy Higgins.

Hosted by Australian television personalities David Koch, Melissa Doyle and Larry Emdur, the Sydney portion of the fundraiser will be broadcast on radio and by all three Australian commercial television networks along with a telethon originating from the Telstra Dome in Melbourne. Proceeds will benefit the victims of the tragedy via the Tsunami Relief Appeal.

Most tickets for the concert are sold out, although a note on the Ticketmaster 7 Web site reports that a limited amount of additional tickets will go on sale tomorrow (Jan. 5).

In related news, a Hong Kong charity event staged Sunday night and broadcast locally by TVB featured Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse, Leon Lai, Aaron Kwok, Leo Koo and Alan Tam and raised more than $6.2 million, according to published reports.

He named the acts yesterday. U2 (big surprise), Franz Ferdinand, Elton John, Coldplay, and The Darkness.

I hope it happens, every penney helps.

NBC, Celebs Step Up Tsunami Aid
Jan 4, 2005, 11:05 AM PT

Hollywood is springing into action in response to the unprecedented tsunami tragedy in Asia.

NBC Universal announced Monday it would air a star-heavy telethon Jan. 15 across all of its network affiliates and cable news stations.

The hourlong telethon will preempt normal Saturday programming for the 8 p.m. time slot and air live on the East Coast and on tape delay elsewhere. The NBC-backed event will run on the network, as well as its cable channels: USA, Bravo, Trio, Sci-Fi, MSBNC and CNBC. NBC-owned Telemundo and Pax will also air the event and Clear Channel will handle the radio broadcast.

The network has yet to announce any of the celebs and musicians participating--the lineup is expected to be finalized this week--but the format is likely to be similar to the massive telethon that was simulcast on dozens of broadcast and cable channels in the wake of 9-11 and raised more than $150 million.

A similar celebrity-driven event last Sunday in China, which included Jackie Chan, raised more than $6.2 million, according to Hong Kong television station TVB.

Meanwhile, several of NBC's local affiliates are holding a separate telethon this Wednesday, which will be fronted by Sarah Jessica Parker, Debra Messing and Téa Leoni.

The death toll from the Dec. 26 earthquake-powered tsunami has passed 150,000 in 12 countries in Asia and Africa.

Individual celebrities are also opening their wallets. Steven Spielberg and his family donated $1.5 million among three charities: Save the Children, CARE, and Oxfam. Sandra Bullock has written a $1 million check to the American Red Cross. And eco-friendly actor Leonardo DiCaprio has pledged a "sizable" contribution to UNICEF to be used toward relief efforts in Thailand. DiCaprio has a particular affinity for Thailand, having filmed much of the 2000 movie The Beach on the now-damaged Thai island of Phi Phi.

The disaster was "devastating, absolutely devastating," DiCaprio said at a news conference Tuesday. "It is a horrific, horrific situation for all involved."

Jay Leno will auction off a Harley-Davidson motorcycle autographed by Tonight Show guests like Nicole Kidman, Matt LeBlanc and Donald Trump, with proceeds going to the Red Cross.

Even infamous American Idol castoff William Hung has the charity bug, according to Hong Kong's Apple Daily. Per the paper, Hung is selling his albums and posters to raise money for victims of the tragedy.

Not to be outdone by Hung, some more reputable music names have been moved to do their part for victims.

Willie Nelson
is headlining a benefit concert Sunday night at the Austin Music Hall. The bill, which will benefit UNICEF and Doctors Without Borders, also includes Patty Griffin, Spoon and Joe Ely.

Across the Pond, Boy George has already laid down vocal tracks for a tune called "Grief Never Grows Old," written by British deejay Mike Read. In addition to the former Culture Club singer, Robin and Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John and Cliff Richard are among those contributing vocals to the track.

Also in the U.K., an effort is under way to mount a massive Live Aid-style concert at Cardiff Stadium in Wales.

While details are still sketchy on the gig, organizers have targeted Jan. 22 as a possible date for the concert, with offers supposedly out to Coldplay and U2.

SoCal rockers Linkin Park were among the first to throw support behind aid efforts. The band announced last week it had given $100,000 for aid and is teaming with the American Red Cross to set up the Music for Relief fund.

"We are fortunate to be in a position to help, but this needs to be a broader effort--both by our fans and by other musicians," said guitarist Brad Delson.

Donations for Music for Relief can be made at www.musicforrelief.org; for the Red Cross, visit www.redcross.org or call 1-800-HELP-NOW.

Well, it shouldn't

Their names in association with this will draw in millions more.

Interestingly, celebrity endorsements span way out of charities. Celebrities are used to sell just about everything. I get that they get paid for those, but the mindset is the same.

Also, I think the celebrities are helping to get this in the public eye and focus that eye on donations.

anyway - food for thought

Arrow Strand...

I meant that it's a celebrity world, that makes me sad. That people are obsessively driven by what they do. It's ridiculous.

I mean, I'm borderline obsessed with Lindsey/Justin/Keith/Josh/Evan (LMAO!!), but whether they endorse something or not, that doesn't change my mind. If I wanna give to a charity, I will, regardless of what they think.

it's not so much the one-upping im interested in seeing...it's the giving...i am thankful "they" are in a position to...and hopefully with enuf one-ups some monetary relief for goods will get through.

i pray for the logisitcs to get situated ASAP...it is so heartwrenching to see these helpless peeps braving the heliblades clawing for a box to feed/water their families.

if the govts can "rebuild" what we take part in blowing up, why cant a bridge/roadway be built/rebuilt to get through to those suffering a natural disaster?

bush's and clinton's comments this morning that 'it's up to those who live there on the ground to find a way to get it through' was/is nauseting.
