The only extra I saw was the song "I'll be Home for Christmas" and La Nicks was not on it

I wonder if she's gotten over her taste for 70's style rockers (i.e. 2/3 of Fleetwwod Mac's men and what...3/5 of the Eagles?) and developed a taste for the slightly younger, smoother style singer ?? They always look very chummy together. Everybody, let's Find Out!

Since this thread has gone way off topic once before, here is another tangent...

With all of these discussions about songwriting and singing ability and performing, and all of these comparisons with Deborah Harry, Heart, Dylan, Joni, etc., I was wondering if anybody on here is a Carly Simon fan?? I have never heard her mentioned here once, yet in a way she is/was like an East Coast version of Stevie. They both came of age as recording artists around the same time (although Carly predated Stevie by a few years), and like Stevie, she's got a unique gift for song and was truly one of the pioneers of female singer/songwriters ala Joni, Carole King, etc. Her recording catalog goes way back to 1965- practically 40 years! And although her career's had its share of ups and downs (mostly downs), she has flown under the radar for the most part, yet she has been one of the most prolific, thoughtful, melodic, and interesting performers out there. Can I gets me some love for Ms Simon??

Anyway, despite their vastly different singing/songwriting styles, I have always found it interesting to compare/contrast them. Carly is the golden girl from a pedigreed family that had formal musical training and got married, had children, but rarely ever toured or performed in concert. Whereas Stevie came from northing without any musical training and has been a consistent road warrior, all at the expense of her personal life. And so it was in this spirit that I waited with great "Anticipation" (okay, that was lame) for Carly's Christmas show at the Apollo Theatre in NYC last Friday. It was billed as Carly's first concert before a paying audience in ten years. This is almost true- I saw her in concert in the summer of 1995 when she did a short 17-date trek. Back then, at the age of 50, after not touring in over 15 years, she completely knocked my socks off in concert. She was this long, tall goddess with the husky, velvety voice who commanded the stage and sang so effortlessly and beautifully. She could do no wrong. If any of those rumors about her notorious stagefright were true, she covered it like a pro when I saw her.

Fast forward (nearly) ten years to last Friday. Carly, almost 60 years old, sauntered on stage with the demeanor of a rail-thin supermodel and a blinding smile full of impossibly white Chiclet teeth. I know much has been said about how youthful Stevie has remained, but Carly has really, really kept it together. Anyway, remembering how great she was ten years earlier, I was looking forward to a wonderful one-off performance by Carly.

Well, I'm not sure if it was due to a respiratory condition or just being rusty after being inactive for so long, but she appears to have finally lost her voice. A number of songs like "Jesse" and "Coming Around Again" were sung in much lower keys, yet she still struggled with the high falsetto parts, even hitting a bunch of bad notes. And when it came to singing the mini-opera "Let the River Run," (which was also notched down a few steps) she pretty much stopped singing and let the huge choir in the background handle the crescendos. And overall she didn't seem to have that animated spunk that made her previous performances so magical. In a nutshell, she looked phenomenal, but sounded horrendous.

Anyway, I guess the reason for posting this is that we should all be grateful that Stevie has retained as much of her facility as she has. She could easily be like Carly Simon and give in to her stagefright and never tour or give performances. And wouldn't we all be aghast if Stevie gave these one-off shows sounding hoarse and lethargic. Yes, she's not the spitfire of yesteryear, but she has held up amazingly well for someone who gives as many performances as she does. Let's see what Celine Dion sounds like in ten years after doing all of her trademark screeching in Las Vegas night after night.

I'm on her site everyday, like I am with this one. Her 1994 album Letters Never Sent is in my Top 10 albums of all time. She is brilliant and so interesting. I really respect her work and heard about her NYC concerts and wanted to know how they came out.

I thought this was by far the best holiday special I've seen in a long, long time. I suppose it helps that I'm a big fan of Chris Isaak's (loved him before I loved FM). The "false start" before "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" was priceless...My mom and I both thought that Miss Nicks was somehow underused, though. Mr. Isaak and Ms. Nicks were both by far the most vocally talented present; they also had more stage presence than Mr. McKnight or Mr. Buble. Long story short: I enjoyed the heck out of it!
