You are not alone! That is cool to hear that you relate to it as well. I wish none of us could relate to it. I wish I could have picked a happier life theme song.
You, Strandinthewind, and I can have a little "Sometimes It's A Bitch" understanding group.

AMERICAN GIRL
Well she was an american girl
Raised on promises
She couldn’t help thinkin that there
Was a little more to life
Somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
Yeah, an d if she had to die
Tryin’ she had one little promise
She was gonna keep

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an american girl

It was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
She could the cars roll by
Out on 441
Like waves crashin’ in the beach
And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God it’s so painful
Something that’s so close
And still so far out of reach

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an american girl

I love that song as well. That is a great choice! The lyrics are very true, I think, for a lot of "American Girls."

No Doubt - Comforting Lie

I started out on the wrong foot
Now I'm not myself
I am Jekyll, I am Hyde
Found this place to hide
Come seek me

Oh, so up and down
So back and forth
So insecure
Can't get this taste out of my mouth
Swallow it down
Pretend

Hold it, hold it all in
Let it build up
Build a bomb
Blow it, blow it away
Clear it all out
Just end it

I'm just a normal person
Without those problems
When did it change
Admissions so embarrassing
I'm on the verge of tears again

Hold it, hold it all in
Let it build up
Build a bomb
And blow it, blow it away
Clear it all out
Just end it

Oh look I took the Band-Aid off
Did I take it off too soon
Hysterical confession
My big courageous move

Don't gasp at the predictable
A comforting lie can't last
Preordained checklist of this awkward love
It's so sad

Hold it, hold it all in
Let it build up
Oh, build a bomb
Blow it, blow it away
Clear it all out
Just end it

Sort it, sort it out
Just give it back
No thank you
Toss it, toss it away
Eliminate
Just give up

I can't decide
This tug of war
I'm feeling weak, yeah

Why I'm relating to this song, I don't know. But I am, somehow.

The Pretenders - Never Do That.

Let me stay
One more day
It would mean so much to me
I won't make a sound
I'll just hang around
I'll sit where the last one sat
But oh no
I'd never do that

Take my mouth as far as you can see
It stretches father than I care to think
Put me out of my misery
If I could keep it shut
I wouldn't be in this rut
With less chance than a laboratory rat
Oh no
I'd never do that

You're a master of illusion
You say you do - but you don't
You think I will - I know I won't

When I see you sitting there
It sends a shock right through me
I never thought an ordinary chair
Could have such poetry
I don't deserve your time
I haven't got the tact
I live above my means in fact
Oh no
I'd never do that

I'd never do that
I'd never do that
I'd never do that

And, last but not least, U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own.

Tough, you think you've got the stuff
You're telling me and anyone
You're hard enough

You don't have to put up a fight
You don't have to always be right
Let me take some of the punches
For you tonight

Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go in alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

We fight all the time
You and I...that's alright
We're the same soul
I don't need...I don't need to hear you say
That if we weren't so alike
You'd like me a whole lot more

Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

I know that we don't talk
I'm sick of it all
Can you hear me when I
Sing, you're the reason I sing
You're the reason why the opera is in me...

Where are we now?
I've got to let you know
A house still doesn't make a home
Don't leave me here alone...

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you that makes it hard to let go
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
Sometimes you can't make it
The best you can do is to fake it
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

Woah. Holy moody lyrics, batman.

This song is pure magic, Tear in Your Hand by Tori, which just inspired me to write my own words, "music is the sixth sense".
All the world just stopped now
So you say you don’t wanna stay together any more
Let me take a deep breath babe
If you need me, me and Neil’ll be hangin’ out with the Dream King

Neil says hi by the way
I don’t believe you’re leaving cause
Me and Charles Manson like the same ice cream
I think it’s that girl
And I think there’re pieces of me you’ve never seen
Maybe she’s just pieces of me you’ve never seen well

All the world is
All I am
The black of the the blackest ocean
And that tear in your hand
All the world is danglin’ danglin’ danglin’ for me darlin'
You don’t know the power that you have with that
Tear in your hand
That tear in your hand

Maybe I ain’t used to
Maybes smashing in a cold room
Cutting my hands up
Everytime I touch you

Maybe it’s time to wave goodbye now
Time to wave goodbye now

Caught a ride with the moon
I know I know you well
Well better than I used to
Haze all clouded up my mind
In the daze of the why it could’ve never been
So you say and I say you know you’re full of wish
And your ’baby baby baby babies’
I tell you there’s peices of me you’ve never seen
Maybe she’s just pieces of me you’ve never seen well

All the world is
All I am
The black of the blackest ocean
And that tear in your hand
All the world is danglin’ danglin’ danglin’ for me darlin’
You don’t know the power that you have with that
Tear in your hand
That tear in your hand
Reading these I realize Tori uses "well"! This song is mine because of my ex fiance. When we broke up it was me that left but it was 50/50, half of me wanted to stay but that wasn't enough. So hard. Right away he started up with a mutual friend and this devastated me. I lost him, a friend, my home, my cats, it was such an awful time.

I saw Tori at the Wang here in Boston which is a beautiful old theater. When she did this song I cried and cried, the acoustics in that place are amazing and the intimacy staggering. It was evident that most were extremely moved. Her talent is extraordinary. The way the lighting was during that song just added to its gravity. I felt exorcized, hehe.

Tori is so imaginitive and I identify with that so much. Neil's music and catching a ride with the moon are brilliant escapes. Then there is her delivery which is so emotive.

Good for you. I can identify with that feeling too because I lived in a very small blue collar town with insane neighbors. I always felt like, "What am I doing here? I don't belong here." I'm just an hour away from there but I might as well be on another planet. I'm so much happier now. I think back to myself then and I think "That poor little girl." I was a very unhappy child.

Thumbs up Well...

the one song that lyrically has always seem to me as genius is "Innuendo" by Queen:

"While the sun hangs in the sky and the desert has sand
While the waves crash in the sea and meet the land
While there's a wind and the stars and the rainbow
Till the mountains crumble into the plain

Oh yes we'll keep on tryin'
Tread that fine line
Oh we'll keep on tryin yeah
Just passing our time

While we live according to race, colour or creed
While we rule by blind madness and pure greed
Our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion
Through the eons, and on and on
Oh yes we'll keep on tryin'
We'll tread that fine line
Oh oh we'll keep on tryin'
Till the end of time
Till the end of time

Through the sorrow all through our splendour
Don't take offence at my innuendo

You can be anything you want to be
Just turn yourself into anything you think that you could ever be
Be free with your tempo be free be free
Surrender your ego be free be free to yourself

Oooh ooh-
If there's a God or any kind of justice under the sky
If there's a point if there's a reason to live or die
If there's an answer to the questions we feel bound to ask
Show yourself - destroy our fears - release your mask

Oh yes we'll keep on trying
Hey tread that fine line
Yeah we'll keep on smiling yeah (yeah yeah)
And whatever will be will be
We'll keep on trying
We'll just keep on trying
Till the end of time
Till the end of time
Till the end of time"

Exclamation This is going to be excruciatingly long...

My choice for the one song that fits an event in my life might just surprise you: "Sara" by Fleetwood Mac. Well, the song choice part might surprise you; the artist should be no shocker. Not only is "Sara" a devastatingly beautiful song, it also lends itself very well to the events, emotions, and thoughts I experienced around the time when my cousin (coincidentally named Sara) committed suicide. Understandably, because of this, "Sara" affects me in a different way than any other song could ever hope to-Fleetwood Mac or otherwise.

Sara Elizabeth was barely 21 when she ended her life by taking a dose of cyanide. I spent an entire week and a half with her when we were little back in 1992; she was close to both my sister Kim and I. Sara was an incredibly sweet person...Every time that I hear the song "Sara" my heart is broken.

The opening chords of "Sara" are slightly ethereal and somehow have hopefulness about them. Then...
Wait a minute, baby...
Stay with me a while
Said you'd give me light
But you never told me about the fire
Oh...The times that I miss. Whenever I sense the loss of my cousin...My mind begged for her to stay for so long...I always was happy to see Sara, but I never had any idea of the pain she felt throughout the past few years of her life or the legacy of pain that her actions would leave...

At this point, I bite my lip, close my eyes, and take a deep breath. The rhythm section kicks in. Now the soaring feeling from opening swoops down as Stevie's clunky piano playing starts, hitting me in the chest.

Drowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
But now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter what for
When build your house
Then call me home
Sara was such an incredibly loved person...The scores of people who came together to celebrate her life were a testament to that. Yet now I realize that her well-meaning parents and immediate family sometimes were so forcefully loving that she felt smothered; above all she was very loved. But no one could ever have made her understand how loved and cherished she was. Many people yearn to be as loved as she was.

I try and try, time and again, to convince myself that why Sara ended her life isn’t important; that she is gone now and I should just get on with my life. I’m still grieving some over a year later...every day in my mind, I call out to her. Tell her that if she wants to give me a sign or something-anything-I’ll be ready. Whenever she has settled her affairs in the great beyond, I’ll be waiting to hear from her.
“Sara” only gets more beautiful at this point-a filigree of guitars begin dancing at the song’s edges. Pure-sounding voices rise and fall somewhere in the background.
And he was just like a great dark wing
Within the wings of a storm
I think I had met my match-he was singing
And undoing the laces
Undoing the laces

The truthfulness and validity of these words really smarts. Sara had a boyfriend who was also a minor criminal and a drug dealer. Despite all of his shortcomings, this guy really loved Sara. Trouble is, both he and Sara had heavy emotional problems. Both needed someone stable. Still, easy as it would be to blame the fact that this guy broke up with her for her suicide, Sara had her own problems. She was at the emotional maturity level or a 13-year-old, as was evidenced by the childish scrapbooks she made (which her parents painfully had out for everyone to view). Her boyfriend really was the great dark wing within the wings of a storm.

With this boyfriend, Sara was sure that she had found her match, her soul mate, the man she would marry and spend the rest of her life with. He was charming and good-looking but not good for her. He pressured her to do certain things and ended up undoing the laces of her already scattered life.

The voices in the background sway and bend before disappearing altogether. The rhythm section steadily becomes more prominent and the piano playing returns, along with the tide of the backing vocals. A vocal flourish from Miss Nicks adds to the atmosphere before...
Said Sara, you’re the poet in my heart
Never change, never start
But now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter what for
When you build your house
Call me home

My cousin was never my muse, but she is something that I always carry around with me. In her life, she was a very moral, religious person and was often pressured by her peers to be less so. Sara confided in my mother that she didn’t have boyfriends like everyone else because the boys weren’t interested when they found out she was going to stay a virgin until marriage. How sad that a sweet, smart and attractive girl like her couldn’t find love. She held her ground and maintained her values until she fell in love with the man who was eventually her undoing. And I’m still waiting for the time I’ll see her again.
Hold on
The night is coming and the starling flew for days
I’d stay home at night all the time
I’d go anywhere, anywhere
Ask me and I’m there, ‘cause I care

There’s a slight echo effect used in that part; it really enhances the passion in Miss Nicks’ voice.

Now...I wonder what I could do if I could turn back the clock. The lines, “hold on/the night is coming and the starling flew for days” have an undeniable resonance with me. The first line reminds me both of death as the “night” coming over Sara and also the “night” as the grief and sorrow washing over my being. The way Miss Nicks sings, “hold on” is very comforting to me. It lets me know that I will come out OK and in one piece.

“I’d stay home at night all the time/I’d go anywhere, anywhere/Ask me and I’m there, ‘cause I care.” Once again the meaning is twofold. I loved Sara so that I would have stayed home at night for her. But Sara was all the way in Michigan and I in California. I also had big time health problems to deal with and I still feel guilty...because I cared and I don’t think she knew I did.

This part also expresses how I grieved perfectly. I was like a little starling going against the wind. I flew for days, looking for answers and withdrawing into myself, becoming isolated as I flew high above everyone else trying to meet her halfway between heaven and earth somehow. All the while languishingly wanting to know that Sara understood how much she meant to me...
Drowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
But now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter anymore
If you build your house
Then please call me

And it keeps on going...My mind is haunted by what happened and keeps repeating everything over and over...The song gains power.
Sara, you’re the poet in my heart
Never change, and don’t you ever stop
Now it’s gone
No, it doesn’t matter anymore
When you build your house
I’ll come by

It all just becomes even more poignant...”Sara” becomes even better each time I hear it.

For a split second after the “I’ll come by”, when the harmony of the backing vocals is just hypnotic, “ahh...” And Christine’s singing of “crazy....” gently glides into the mix. Then, “Sara...” is sung in unison, and an endless number of Stevies singing her name rise and fall gently. “Crazy...” is sung again...So is “Sara...”

A muted Miss Nicks sings “Ooh and there’s a heartbeat and it never really died...” So true... “Dreaming...” and then, “never really died...” find their way into the song. “Would you swallow all your pride...”? From the left, “oh oh oh.” From the right, “would you speak a little louder.” Another “oh oh oh.” A barely audible “dreaming...” is there again. Then, crystal clear from somewhere behind you, “All I ever wanted was to know that you’d been dreaming...” Lastly, only if you turn the volume up can you hear, “there’s a heartbeat and it never really died...” The song is over.

Stevie Nicks had her own reasons for writing “Sara;” I have my own reasons for my reading of it. Yet it holds a common thread, I think: “Sara” is a song about a little girl who is gone now; we miss her; we regret our actions; we want to be with us again; we love her. The loss of “Sara” was an event that shattered whatever innocence we had and we’ll never be the same again. A part of us died then.

When I listen to music, I surrender myself to it. Live through it. Relate to it. That’s just the way I like to enjoy my music. Stevie Nicks’ “Sara” has an effect on me incomparable to any other song-it is as if I’m on a different plane of existence when hearing “Sara.” I like to think my first hearing "Sara" not long before my cousin ended her life was meant to be. I can’t listen to it too much because the emotions are so strong, but when I can the experience is life affirming.
-Justin

I'm so sorry about your cousin, Justin. What you wrote was very moving and I can tell heartfelt. ((((hugs)))))

A guy I dated in high school committed suicide a few weeks ago. It was devastating, even though I hadn't seen him in 3-4 years. In fact, that made it even harder.

Thank you, Krista.
My deepest condolences about your friend from high school. It must be so difficult when someone you grew up with and dated is gone...

Thanks Justin. I really appreciate it.

I felt so bad for his parents....they've really gone through a lot over the years. Aaron (that was his name) left behind a young daughter; I hope she can give them the strength they need.
