Default Juicy Stevie & Lindsey quotes in the new Rolling Stone

Sorry if someone has mentioned this already...

In the latest issue of Rolling Stone (50 Greatest Photos And The Stories Behind Them or something), Stevie and Lindsey talk very openly about the shoot for the pic of the five of them in bed together. I can't help being gossipy and specifically mentioning that Stevie says she and LB talked and made out for 2 hours after the session was finished until Annie Lebowitz finally told them they had to leave.....

I went to the RS website but they only put up details about a few of the photos--not FM's, sadly. I guess this means I'm going to have to go and buy the issue. I'd love to read the story behind that photo and esp. if it's got juicy gossip!

Default Rs 958

There's only one picture, the cover shot that appeared on the March 24, 1997 issue, but without the headlines. The issue is $5.95 + tax.

Here's a thumbnail of the original RS cover from 1977:

The Photographs
Page 88

Fleetwood Mac
Photographed by Annie Leibovitz
February 1977

It was a writer-as-shrink era,” says Cameron Crowe, who, barely out of his teens, wrote the Rolling Stone cover story on Fleetwood Mac during the recording of Rumours. “They were one of the first bands to understand that you could open up your life to a reporter, and it could serve everyone’s purpose. The writer isn’t trying to steal from you.”

“That album was almost like a play, with all of us singing about our lives,” says Lindsey Buckingham. Adds Mick Fleetwood, “Cameron probably couldn’t believe his luck, stumbling into this broiling cauldron of soap opera. And Annie [Leibovitz] got the consummate Rumours shot. Partner-swapping was in the ether.”

“I have a feeling the band had all gone through rehab or something,” says Leibovitz, “and I brought out huge amounts of drugs, thinking that’s what they wanted. They were not so happy about it, but everyone consumed everything, so we were all out to lunch. I brought the mattress and sheets.”

“I don’t remember the drugs,” says Stevie Nicks. “I thought it was a case of champagne. There were two ex-couples in the band. When Annie said she wanted us to lie down together on a big bed, it was like, ‘Hmm, hope you have a backup idea.’ But she said, “No, you’re going to look great, this will be fun, have a glass of champagne.’ I said, ‘OK, but I can’t curl up next to Mick for the next three hours while Annie is suspended over us on a platform.”

“Christine [McVie] really didn’t want to be next to John [McVie], because they were just divorced,” Nicks adds. “So he was the odd man out, reading the magazine. Afterwards, Lindsey and I got to talking about how amazing it was that not so long ago I was a waitress and he didn’t have a job, and now we were on the cover of ROLLING STONE with this huge record. And we lay there for two hours talking and making out. Finally, Annie had to tell us to leave, because she had rented the room for only so long. But in one afternoon she put Lindsey and me back together and also planted the seed for Mick and me, which happened a year later. You want to know the power of Annie Leibovitz, there you go.”

As for the Buckingham, he remembers the photo session a little differently. “For Stevie and me, the wounds and animosities were still very fresh,” he says. “So the idea for the photo wasn’t all that funny. We had to compartmentalize our feelings to keep the band functional, and at the end of the session, we had this moment of not being able to avoid all that had been lost. We embraced for about fifteen minutes, and Mick finally came over and said that people were starting to get uncomfortable. I don’t know how healthy all this display of our personal life was, but that’s showbiz.”

The differing responses/memories of S & L are so true to form. That's them in a nutshell, right there ! Psychologically, it explains the songs, the quotes we've heard over the years, etc. etc. - what a hoot.

Yes indeed. Now shall continue the speculation on who's in denial and who's romanticizing things even further.

Wow, pretty funny how those two accounts differ. Typical!! I suppose the truth lies somewhere in between!

FWIW John and Chris didn't actually have their divorce finalized until early 1978. So maybe what Stevie meant was that they had gone ahead w/ starting the legal process of actually doing it...? I think it took about a year back then for that kind of thing to be finalized. Poor John, all alone w/ his magazine.

FWIW I absolutely love that Cameron Crowe interview. I remember reading it over and over as a young teen and crying my eyes out at the emotional wallop it packed, especially (surprise surprise... ) at the stuff Chris had to say about John, and the way he was described as being so alone and depressed. it was fascinating, the contrast at the way she went on and on about him, her feelings, her memories etc...and then to go from that to the next section where John could only manage to spit out exactly three sentences about her before completely shutting down about it.....it was so heavy.

I was an emotional child.

Hey one question for those of you who have this original article-- in the photo of Chris at the bottom of page 50, who is that guy kissing her hand? Is that John? Curry? I have never quite been sure, the photo is so dark. Any ideas??

When I was little back in the 80s and I had first discovered Bette Midler thanks to my grandmother, there was a front page article in People about her. I forced my mother to read it to me before bed one night and in the middle of the article, it starts talking about how her sister got hit by a bus and died en route to seeing her perform on Broadway. I was traumatized, to say the least.

Lis, which picture on page 50 do you mean? The small picture of her at the pianet? John is sitting next to her, but he's not kissing her hand. I don't see anyone kissing her hand in that picture.

Thanks for transcribing that Daniel. It's wild to read their different versions of this shoot. The soap opera just never ends with them, does it--right down to the way in which they remember what happened!

>>Lis, which picture on page 50 do you mean? The small picture of her at the pianet? John is sitting next to her, but he's not kissing her hand. I don't see anyone kissing her hand in that picture.>>

That is odd. On my page 50 there is the big shot of her at the top on the couch, sort of of holding a pillow. Then at the bottom she is sitting at some cluttered table w/ some guy-- they are looking at each other and he is kissing her hand. You don't have this photo in your RS magazine? On the bottom of page 51 is John laying on the front of his boat. Let me go look at my other copy of this article.....

Sheesh you know what, there are TWO DIFFERENT VERSIONS!!! yes, this other one has the pic of her at the pianet w/ John. Here's a scan of the pic I'm talking about below. I wonder why they did 2 versions of this page....fascinating trivia LOL. BTW the upper right corner of the cover of the one w/ the pianet says '85cents/UK 50p' while the hand/kiss one says $1.00. Different prices on mags released at the some time? I must have a collector's item!?

To me it looks like John kissing her hand...

I love how Stevie says "We made out" and Lindsey says "We embraced for about 15 minutes". Cracks me up!
Maybe they embraced for about fifteen minutes and THEN made out!

Well, this is a shock You're right. There must be 2 different versions. In the upper right hand corner of my Rolling Stone it says 85centsUK50p. Do you have both versions? Is the text in both articles the same? Are there any other differences? By the way, my initial reaction to that picture is that it's Curry Grant, because of the hair. I even thought it could be Lindsey, but why would he be kissing her hand? But, you're right the picture is not all that clear.
