Dance Silver Springs -- Dub?

I'm watching Silver Springs on The Dance... I always thought something looked fishy, but now I'm positive that some of it's an overdub, since I've figured it out myself. It's easier to tell as a pianist, but look at what Christine is playing at the beginning compared to what you hear...

Some of the chords she is shown playing are actually not what is heard (playing low chords, but you hear them high), and some of it doesn't even line up at all.

I know The Dance was filmed/recorded so they could overdub, but this just proves one instance where it was done... and I wasn't tricked!

Alex you are so right. What she plays is totally different to what you hear, at least from what is shown of her playing in the intro. It may just have been a levels thing, but I think that what she played live was a bit clunkier than the lovely intro you actually hear. Meanwhile it suits me how The Dance was all scrubbed up and overdubbed (to an extent) ...it just sounds so damn good!

Yeah, I've always noticed this too. Christine seems so *nervous* in that bit, almost like she doesn't quite know where to put her hands. They almost seem to be shaking.
So yeah, I think we're lucky this bit was overdubbed.

Well, I'm either assuming that it's a dub, or they just put the shot in the wrong place. Once I learn that opening better, I should be able to tell :P.

I'm also going to check the Rhiannon intro more carefully.

I've also noticed other things, like how the audio levels are completely different on the DVD than the CD.

Take "You Make Loving Fun" for example. You can heard her Rhodes parts much more clearly than on the CD, and you can hardly hear the second keyboard.

What's most dissatisfying is that since they don't show her playing that killer piano solo on Don't Stop, that was probably dubbed in too...

Durring the chain, right after Lindsey's solo kicks in and he's about to start the "Chains keep us together" bit, he puts his face up to the mic and screams something, like a "yeah yeah yeah" or the like (as he frequently does) but alas, nothing is heard, which is impossible because its directly shouted into the mic. So, obviously, another edit there. Personally, I'd rather it sound bad but have it be the ORIGINAL and the REAL band playing live!

Oh well.

Well, keep in mind that they filmed/recorded three shows: the dress rehearsal, and two in front of live audiences.

So while there was some overdubbing and "sweetening" done, some of the continuity errors are also most likely caused by the use of film and audio from the multiple performances.

Another glaring example I've noticed is during "Bleed to Love Her." You can clearly hear Stevie's harmonies on parts of the chorus when she isn't anywhere near the microphone! I can't remember the specific part, but if you watch you'll notice.

I agree that it's dissatisfying that it doesn't show her playing it. It was totally drowned out by the brass band for most of it until that little solo. It seems as overdubbed as it gets, because of the pronounced fidelity and highered volume level creating a sort of 'isolated' aka studio sound. Also as you say it doesn't show her playing a note of it. But she was definitely jamming to some extent atthe concert because she puts her head down and concentrates for that bit.

I really don't particularly care that this whole this is dubbed I don't think The Dance was done as a representation of a normal live peformance.

Well, I was just going to make another topic about the Fleetwood Mac Live album in particular, but I may just post it here.


It is well known that they did not record it all on the Tusk tour, but I am very confused by the two or the 3 tracks I have from it (iTunes Music Store ).

The most confusing is Dreams. I think we have all seen the video that 'goes' with it. If you pay attention to the video, Chris and Lindsey aren't singing on the prechorus, and they do sing on the chorus. On the CD, they are heard singing the "Heart... Beat... Ooooooh" etc., in STEREO (Chris left, Lindsey right), and on the chorus the 3 of them are singing and in the center channel.

I'm also wondering how Chris is playing the Hohner Pianet with both hands (or so it sounds) and still finds time to do the B3 part. (I swear it's her playing... nobody else plays it right)

But this song seems to be chopped up often. The video I found online is from some sort of documentary, where the beginning of the song is played, but it goes right to the second verse and ends. I have to try and get this video again, because I lost it when doing my computer over.

Next question... Landslide: Is this actually from Tusk tour? I hear a second guitar which I figure would be Ray Lindsey. Also, the piano solo is NOT a Fender Rhodes... Chris never used them live (that I've seen/heard). It's also not a Hohner Pianet, because I can hear the notes sustaining at points, and the Pianet does not have a sustain feature. It must be the Yamaha CP-30.

As for Rhiannon... the bass is WAY out of tune at the end, and there is feedback at one point. I don't know why they picked that one.

Those backup vocals may have been added in post-production, since they're not present on other live recordings from that time.

She's playing the electric piano rhythm pattern with her left hand (she's left-handed) & the B3 with the right on the chorus.

Next question... Landslide: Is this actually from Tusk tour?

Yes, London June 1980.

Ray Lindsey didn't play "Landslide" with the band onstage.

Who said it was? On the Tusk Tour, she played the "Landslide" solo on the CP30. The Rhodes was used for the same part from 1975 to 1978.

It's not the best "Rhiannon" around in my view, although that's subjective. But the feedback during the vamp provides a very nice opportunity to "work" it into his guitar line, & I'm sure he was very aware of that & possibly even jazzed about that little disruption when he was compiling the live album -- similar to the way he left in the spontaneous tag-out stuff at the end of "Oh Daddy" (when Christine was essentially indicating to the engineers that the track was finished).

Bout the B3 part, yes, it sounds that way... I know the electric piano part by heart and it sounds like she's playing 'two handed' unless she's doing jumps from the bass to the chords... possible, but really hard.

I still swear I hear two guitars on Landslide... At first I thought it was a delay effect, which it may actually be... though it sounds like two different things are playing.

'bout the Rhodes... someone yelled at me once saying that she 'always does it on Rhodes.' I need to check my bootlegs, but I don't think I've ever heard her use one on stage. I know that she liked them on Rhiannon, but she always used the Pianet from my knowledge.

It was kind of amusing the first time I heard Say You Love Me played on the Pianet... I wasn't expecting that.
