I am registered Republican, but do not necessarily ascribe to the "right" philosophy on alot of things (such as capital punishment - I oppose it).

Sometimes I post on political threads, but I agree with Nancy that it can be somewhat disheartening when the threads disintigrate into personal attacks.
I think everyone has the right to an opinion, but I don't think that gives anyone the right to express it however they damn well please. Words can be weapons. I personally have a very open mind and welcome information from opposing viewpoints because it helps me learn more about why I have the opinions that I have. I don't think you can really have an educated opinion until you take the time to think through why you think the way that you do, and that means considering all points of view.

For me, an opinion is much more credible when it is communicated in a logical, non-threatening way. As soon as someone starts using personal attacks, the focus shifts to the tone of the opinion, instead of the substance of the opinion.

That's pretty much why I don't get involved. I'm not a confrontational person AT ALL and am not very good at getting my point across. It doesn't help things that I'm a bit airheaded and don't always understand political mumbo jumbo! But I do read quite a few of the political threads here and do find them interesting, at times.

Like I said, I don't like to get involved in political discussions.

Just the facts ma'am. I'll let them speak for themselves.

It's usually only me, Jason, Chris, sparky, Le Stew, DeeGeME, and Carne that participate in those threads for the most part, so please, tell me how we personally attack each other. Examples, please. I think that sometimes friendly ribbing gets mistaken for "attacking," for the most part.

I'd be lost without the dialogue between you and Jason. You both get me thinking.

Which one? The one in this thread? You thought that was mean-spirited? Maybe you're talking about the one in the Reagan thread?

I'm not trying to be a wet blanket - I just figured I owed it to my fellow Republicans to explain why I'm not out there getting their back in poltical threads. I haven't gone back and posted further on the Reagan thread, for instance, because I know it would upset me to see him ripped apart.

Arrow Dis...

I think alot of the Repubs on the board feel uhhhh....overpowered (not the right word, but my mind is mush right now. LOL) by you and the other Dems/Libs on the board. You guys are so vocal (not a bad thing), it's kinda harsh to some people, I guess.

JMO.

We can't make lemonade out of potatoes, after all.
Well, I remember it kind of like I made the statement that moderate Democrats don't go for reparations. I was then asked to back this statment up - a reasonable request, if my statement was incorrect. However, was it? According to your above answer, it wasn't (this answer was never given to me at the time). At any rate, I admitted that I didn't have numbers, but that I guessed it was true due to what Democratic candidates themselves were saying. I was then given laughing emoticons. At that point I appealed to someone simply to give me a guess as to whether moderate Democrats supported reparations. Around then Jason informed me that he could find no statement on the issue at all.

But thank you for being polite and informative in your reply here.

I must say I have been involved in quite a few of these political discussions, and while Dissention and others know my views are pretty different than theres, they HAVE ALWAYS been respectful of my opinions, and I've never been bashed by anyone for having different views...I just thought this would be a good thread for the republicans on the board to express their views, since we DO get a lot of democrat-based views here...and not much republican..

That's just the thing though. No one ripped him apart. We discussed him using historical fact.
