Nancy - whenever Lindsey is singing at the mic, there's a good chance that the sound guys drop his sound level and boost those of Carlos and Neale. I spent my second 2 front rows confirming what I disbelievingly saw in the first.

I haven't seen this in action myself (I was too far away in my show) but from certain reviews I've gathered the impression that Lindsey frets the chords for the audience; all they have to do is strum. Of course, the quality of their strumming can obviously vary a lot.

I agree with you that it is better to have something different. The songs from the 1975-1980 tours and the Dance tour sound different on the bootlegs than on their officially released live album counterparts so I most certainly don't mind this even if it seems like the band is re-recording its stuff for the nth time. Like Johnny Stew is trying to make the best out of the Timespace remixes, I'm trying to make the best out of this too.

Further proof that the background players hinder the musicians ambitions. Only John needs no help with his parts and even he is often too low in the mix.

I can guarantee that that didn't happen at the September 24th show. It was pandemonium at the front of the stage that night.

That I noticed, he only did not play lead on Stand Back. From my vantage point, I could see everyone on stage except the secret drummer. I often looked at the two backing guitarists to see what they were doing. Usually, they were strumming. I remember specifically looking at them during Go Your Own Way and saw them strumming. The strums add a thick texture to the songs, so thick that in a couple of instances Lindsey's lead guitar was buried.

OK, now this is making sense to me. One of those instances, you see, was during the Go Your Own Way solo. It may be that his guitar is turned down because of the dissonant sounds he gets from the audience members mauling the instrument. If that's the case, it's still silly. If you're going to do it, do it in full glory. The other instance in which his guitar was too low was after the drum solo on World Turning. But as far as the short solos on various songs and the two extended solos -- I'm So Afraid and Come -- that's all Lindsey. On I'm So Afraid, the two backup guitarists are not on stage. On Come, Neal is playing the main riffs during the verses, then I am pretty sure he and Carlos are doing power chords doing the loud, obnoxious parts. There was no trading of leads during the solo that I could tell, not like Lindsey did with This Is the Time in the Cradle tour.

I also noticed that the I Know I'm not Wrong riff (is it a harmonica or an accordian?) is mysteriously heard though no one is playing it. Even Brett is playing guitar on that song. So you have three strummers and Lindsey doing the lead work. The riff is obviously programmed, much like some of the synth sounds on Everywhere in The Dance.

I am curious, though, Joe, when exactly did you think one of the backup guitarists was doing the lead?

Oh no, I know it when it happened. It's been a complaint of mine since the beginning. It just looks ridiculous. That's not what you'll find at an FM concert.

Exactly. Just like with The Dance, the energy didn't blow me away because the crowd was so boring and lethargic. For cripes sake, if they had fans there, there would've been a riot.

Yeah, I watched it going, "Get off yer butts!!!" Insane.

I think Lindsey's voice is strong and powerful this tour. Sure, he's had some off notes, nights, but everyone does. Listening to Say Goodbye back in England, I was mesmerized by that man's voice, it was so flawless.

BTW, I'm listening to this WBWC FM thing and WOW, they are playing the Mirage version of Not That Funny...ON THE RADIO!!!!!!! They rule!!!!!

Yeah, the soundman is probably responsible for it. And from the bootlegs I've assumed that some of the harmonies (that come from the cd version, not the LP version) are programmed as well. Brett Tuggle did mention in his current Q&A that "Red Rover" has similar procedure too.

BTW - there are at least two more "musicians" under the stage playing synth. I have seen them and that is what they looked like they were doing.

You guys I was there,

Ok, In that middle part yes he goes down to the audience but he does NOT let them play the guitar. He just sits on the little ledge right in front of the fans. Then at the end he lets them play.

bootleg (The ALD/IEM version) without a doubt, Proves that some background vocals were programmed in...It's very obvious on "Peacekeeper".

About Lindsey not playing...Just watch any of the SYW tour bootlegs on VHS/DVD and you can see a few times through each show were he is concentrating on the vocals more than the guitar and Neal & Carlos are there picking up the slack.

Strandie, do you mean in addition to the secret drummer?

And Mick doesn't feel the need to introduce them? I guess a soundman does a lot more nowadays than in the days of yore.

This makes sense. Because it definitely sounded to me like there were far more sounds coming out of that stage than the dinky keyboard and the guitar strums. It sounded considerably fuller than during The Dance tour.

I stil remember the Cradle tour as having the best version of Tusk, outside the two shows with the USC band.
