Was Enchanted a sort of farewell?

It would have been impossible to realize at the time, but now when I look back on the Enchanted Tour and box set I wonder if it was a sort of (conscious or subconscious) farewell for Stevie to her career up to that point. Maybe "farewell" is the wrong word...more a closing of that chapter. It certainly seems that way: Release of a career-spanning CD set, (most notably) the Enchanted Tour setlist and her talking during the show ("This is probably the first and last time I will ever do this, guys"), and the last we saw of the "Stevie energy" (including, but not limited to, wardrobe ) of yesteryear, IMO. I am not harsh about this...I'm fine with the way she is now, too, and love her no matter what, but one cannot deny there is a difference. Anyone else made this observation? It's very profound to me...I just wish I would've been able to take it a little more seriously at the time!

She's done pretty damn good on this Fleetwood Mac tour I think tho...but you are right..there IS a difference

I agree...and I AM tired of all of the over-criticism of her SYW performances. Like I said, I still love and enjoy her just as much as always, but it is undeniable that something seems to have shifted inside of her...and it could be simply and wonderfully that she's the happiest she's ever been or she's just feeling like she's beginning a new chapter of her life. I want to stress again that this was just an observation and I am not being critical of the way she is now, just that she seems different (in a way that everyone changes throughout their life), and the changing point seemed to be Enchanted.

Hey, I can't complain the SYW Stevie is the only live stevie I will ever know, I'm just glad Fleetwood Mac was still around by the time I got around to discovering them as most bands I love are not together anymore. The important thing for me when watching performers is that they have FUN, and I can say Stevie and FM had alot of fun when I say them which made the show fun. Plus I would rather see her "normal" and not "coked" I have seen Red Rocks where she is too coked, it's a bit pitiful to watch in some cases. Although I adore the early clips of Rumors and Tusk days, but those will never be my memories, so I am happy with the SYW ones and I will say BC stands up to the earlier days perhaphs b/c it is such a bittersweet song it seems to have finally found the right time for her to perform it.

Though I also have my own memories of Dance, Enchanted, TISL and SYW Stevie (that sounds like they're each part of a doll series ), I found this post really touching as a 25-year-old who discovered Stevie/FM in '95 and have the same predicament of loving bands who broke up or died before I was born or old enoguh to see them. I have to admit, though, I've managed to do well with those who are still around!

Thanks Everyhour, I can't even tell you how excited I was that FM was touring again since I missed them on the Dance. What other bands do you love? And which have you seen?

well my fave bands are Fleetwood Mac, U2 and tom petty & the Heartbreakers.

I've seen the Mac 3 times (although minus Christine--I'll forever hate myself for not seeing them on The Dance tour). I saw U2 once back in 2001 and have not yet seen Tom Petty.

actually, i thought it was the start of a new beginning. i thought of it as stevie's "dance". she was riding high from FM's newfound popularity...and we knew that she would be coming back with a solo album of new material.

but i think her "farewell to an era" was during the RAL tour. her popularity (as a solo artist) was five years old at that point (the five year rule)...we know from mick's book, although, what can one believe from his somewhat distorted recollections, that stevie was planning on "cleaning up" after the tour. therefore, it was a "farewell" to that "crazy" lifestyle she was living.

i saw them when the TITN tour came around... she was calmer but i figured the situation was different in FM. it wasn't only her gig....christine was back in 'fine form', and the guys did a good job of preventing me from thinking about lindey's absence too much.

for some strange reason or hope, when stevie came out for OSOTM, i assumed she would rock out again. but no... i saw her at SPAC (saratoga, ny) where she was apprarently being grounded for having too much fun on the previous road trip. it sounded good, and actually it was refreshing from the crazy drunken banter from the previous summer.

so, "we'll flash forward to a few years later"....

on the "enchanted" tour, she was riding high on the success of "the dance" and the prospect of working on a new album with sheryl crow was hopeful.
the shows were great. i was at the hartford, holmdel, and nyc shows...nyc being the best 'live' stevie concert i have ever been to.

This is a really good point, though I still get That Farewell Feeling ( ) from Enchanted, I now view RAL as a seperate, additional chapter being closed.

Oh my, jadegypsy. I just recently compiled the ticket stubs from every concert I've ever been to into an album, and it was over 80 (so far...)! I love a WIDE variety of artists. Let's see...the artist I've seen the most times are The Everly Brothers (10 times), second being Stevie (if you combine FM and solo). I love so many artists that are either in Rock 'N' Roll Heaven now or have been at it for 20, 30 , 40 years that I would be here for a loooooooooong time if I listed them all! Are you able to tell me who you love and/or have seen without running into this predicament? Try if you wish, and then I'll chime in on those we have in common. You can send me a PM if you'd rather.
