I've got one word: Cracker.

I've seen this band more than any other performer. I've seen them on back-to-back nights. I've seen them in New York on Wednesday and Boston on Friday.

Each time, and I mean every single time, the show is different. They don't even use a setlist. Ever.

At most they'll play three or four songs in the same sequence from one night to the next. I've seen them open up with one of their sloooooowest numbers, and still get the crowd in a tizzy when they break into the second, faster number. I've seen them do mostly country stuff for the first half hour of a show and still bring the crowd along. Hell, once they stopped in the middle of a six-minute slow song because singer/guitarist David Lowery said he lost his place in the song. Then they started the whole song over again! Later on that same show, they screwed up "Euro-Trash Girl," another long-ass number and one of their bigger hits. But this time, rather than start over, they broke into a Camper Van Beethoven ska instrumental. Now that's taking risks!

Showmanship. Spontaneity. That's what the Mac needs.

I've got 2 more words: Grateful Dead - I've never been a huge fan of theirs, but they were notorious for never playing the same show twice - hence the dead-head following from show to show....or wait, those folks were homeless, right?

And rightfully so. Out of every artist out there, Tom Petty has the most integrity. No one really compares to him, he's a legend, at least in my eyes.

And, I think the Allman Brothers Band has carried the torch that was passed when Jerry Garcia passed away. They RARELY play the same set EVER.

Little Feat is the same way, too. Completely different set night to night.

And Petty is not afraid to downplay his megastardom by playing small venues & launching tours without quite so much pomp & circumstance, which is something Fleetwood Mac would have to do if they want to approach the concert experience on entirely different terms.

You can't give it up like Cracker or the Grateful Dead if you trumpet your worldwide tour with the sort of heraldry usually reserved for royalty. If you want to play on a more elemental level & toss new ideas around, you probably need to ditch your million-dollar guarantees & your exorbitant ticket prices & all the rest of the brouhaha.

That would never happen. Being in Fleetwood Mac is all about getting the royal treatment; they can't ditch the luxury suites or the private massages. They can't live in poverty, man.

I think that solo tours are easier for them both to squirrel around with. During the OOTC tour, Lindsey shook the setlist up a bit. Stevie did some rare stuff on the, was it...Enchanted (?) tour. But, with Fleetwood Mac, they are expected to do a certain setlist. WTH they give two shiz's about people who aren't even real FANS, I'll NEVER know.

True, David, very true. And come to think of it, even the Stones still give in to a healthy level of spontaneity in their shows. And their supporting band is even bigger than FM's. Talk about rock royalty! Their last tour was especially cool from a performance standpoint, if not from a ticket price perspective, because they did small venues too.

When I saw them in 1998 (or 99?) they were doing songs requested by fans through the Internet. Hey, they added Gimme Shelter to the regular setlist because it was always being requested. I believe the night I saw them, they played Factory Girl! Think about that! Factory Girl. That had to come from some diehard fans.

Fleetwood Mac needs spontaneity and stage courage.

Christy, this is true, but he still played The Chain, Go Your Own Way, Tusk, Save Me a Place, Big Love and I'm So Afraid. I think it would have been OK to drop I'm So Afraid (sorry, I know you love that song) and The Chain.

Go Your Own Way and Tusk were fine because they are his signature songs. But he still relied too much on the FM catalogue, though he can be forgiven for Big Love and Save Me a Place. Both were done in fresh, exciting ways that sounded like new songs. Numbers from Go Insane (except for the reworked title track) and Law and Order were noticeably absent. He should have done at least one or two more from each album. Trouble was the only song from Law and Order.

Be that as it may, I am not really complaining about that show because it remains the best show I have ever seen. The only other shows that come close are one by the Stones and a few Cracker concerts. (Cracker is always kick-ass. I have never seen this band do anything less than 200 percent in their performances.) I was merely pointing out that falling back on the standards seems to be ingrained in Lindsey's very fiber. I think that he could have eschewed most of the FM stuff for his solo tour. After all, he had broken with the band and he was on this doing-what-I-want kick.

i don't expect this from FM....even in their earlier days i don't think they were this spontaneous. but if 10% of that leaked into macland we'd have a start.

Yup. Saw The Allman's on two consecutive nights a few years back and saw two completely different shows.

For many years has he refused to play the classics. He just recently started playing the popular stuff from the 70's, and the Let's Dance era! I almost lost my sh*t when I heard that he played Modern Love at one of the shows on this tour.

I would've paid $125 just to see him perform that song!!!

He's coming back to my area later this summer and I'm going to get down on my knees and pray that he plays it. HOWEVER - if he played Beauty and the Beast, I'd have a stroke!!!!!!!!
