Words You Just Hate For No Good Reason

I wasn't going to bring this up, but since Paula already went there...

I had a female friend who hated the word "pussy."
And I'm not even talking in just the slang sense... she would flip if you said "pussycat," "pussy willow," etc.
Seriously, her daughter is growing up thinking "Puss 'N Boots" is called "Kitty 'N Boots."

Myself and another friend had some good laughs at her expense one night though, because she threw a fit over us discussing Bond movies, and mentioning "Octopussy."
So... we found a way to work that word into the title of EVERY Bond movie.
Some were merely groaners, but others were hysterical.

Anyway...
I'm with Deanna... I usually "hate" the way people pronounce words, rather than actual words themselves. But I'll admit that, in discussions about the members of Fleetwood Mac, I find myself hating the word "better."

I was the same way, until my daughter was told by her babysitter that girls wear panties; boys wear underwear. So that has been what we call them ever since, but I still prefer underwear.

It bothers me, too, when people butcher words and use things like uh-huh, huh-uh, gonna, wanna. They mainly bother me at work when a witness uses them, because with some of them I have to pause and think how to write it, because it's just not natural for me.
A couple words that came up this week: feets, foots, ranned.

That reminds me of the movie Serial Mom with Kathleen Turner, Ricki Lake and Sam Waterson. One of the women Kathleen wanted to murder HATED the word so she prank called her and would say it to her. Everytime I hear, "pussywillow," I think of Kathleen Turner in the movie

Words that drive me nuts...One tops the list : Polenta. I hate this word not only because is does not fit the item it describes, but also because it sounds so much like PLACENTA. There is also a city in So Cal called Placentia, which reminds me of both Placenta and Polenta, which makes it almost worse than the other two combined.

I still can't believe Kathleen and Sam were in it. It does have hysterical moments for sure but it's completely twisted and totally sick and raunchy. I've seen it several times

I can't think of words I hate...what I hate more is the way people mispronounce words...it's becoming more and more common and it really ticks me off..

Examples: people who say "Aks (axe)" instead of "Ask"....Ex-scape instead of Escape...Supposably instead of supposedly....and my HUGE pet peeve is when people drop certain parts of words...like "Fou-en" instead of fountain..."MOU-EN" instead of Mountain...haha..I don't know if I explained that last one well...that one's hard without the benefit of actually hearing the examples...


So yeah...I can't think of words I don't like...it's mostly the way people say them...

I'm a real tyrant for correct speech in my classroom.
BTW, "supposably" reminded me of that Friends episode.
