Default Damn you, Shackin'Up: IKINW Stuck in My Head

Darn it, Gerald. In looking for The Gourds' version of IKINW to send you the copy, the damn tune became deeply entrenched in my head and now that's all I hear in my mind's ear. For a full day!

I listened to all four Tusk versions on the way to work today. By the way, did you guys notice that one of the versions has a very prominent "pling pling" track, which sounds like a vibraphone? The pling pling appears on one of the other versions as well, but it's not quite as salient.

This got me to thinking -- dangerous as that prospect may sound to you -- that IKINW is a far more important song than I realized. The sound that Lindsey used in some may recordings after that appears to be taking shape here, the pling pling being a fine example. Sure, Rumours was layered with guitar upon guitar, but it seems that here is when Lindsey starts to look at other music-making objects or instruments for riffs and melodies. The vibraphone sounds appear in Mirage, Go Insane and Tango, in some variation or another. In some cases, they may even be tweaked guitars, or who knows, toy pianos, rather than the actual vibraphone.

For instance, compare Can't Go Back to that pling pling version of IKINW. It's as if one, Can't Go Back, is the offshoot of the other, IKNIW. The relationship is undeniable, even though the songs are in different keys.

And of course, IKINW and Not That Funny appeared to have been spawned in the same egg. They are twins. Lindsey is even singing Not That Funny lyrics in early versions of IKNIW. Of course the even final versions share some verses.

Anyway, IKINW = great song. IKINW bonus versions = great insight into how our genius works.

Gerald, by the way, did you get that version yet? It should be in your inbox.

Yep, I heard this fab version of The Song. It is a REAL good coverversion! I especially like the way they sing it: very honest to all those Lindseyvocals with that heartfelt please please etcetera. Thanks a lot Carne!!!

And for getting IKINW in your head all day: You're welcome . It is in my head a lot of times. For years and years now. It has something to do with being stubborn, selfcentered and creating your own identity through opinionbuilding. I just turned 15 when I heard this song for the first time, and I've always felt it was about me and my need to have a political and social identity and position in relationships. Having the guts to know you're not wrong. Of cause this has become more of a cynical view at myself after puberty, but I still relate to the song immensely. Maybe it is even about loving statements

Of course this is not a speculation on what lindsey meant: I couldn't care less. It's what I think the song means to ME. So I'm right. I'm sure.

Now all that remains is to check out the live performances of IKINW from the final three Tusk tour dress rehearsals, Oct. 18-20, 1979, when the song was the final full-band encore of the set. They should be posted in the coming months to a Web site near you!

Yes, I know what you mean, Its that fabulous beachboys-like instrumental version. Very intriguing. He used it a little to much after this, especially on TITN. There it is very clean sounding, but on this demoversion I like it a lot.

There's a cover of IKINW?!

I'm looking for it on Kazaa now but to no avail. Do you think you could send it to me, Carne? I'm assuming you mean send the mp3, not by mail!
It's [email protected] if you're able to.

I agree with everything you've all said. Yes, the pling pling in one of the 'draft versions'... It's that 'Gypsy' sound. I think it could be pentatonic, like in Gypsy. Hmmm.. 'pentatonic plucking'.

Cammie - a jazz concert? Classy!

Thanks again Gerald. As for whether I like the IKIKW cover... well, it's good. Very faithful though. I'm sure Lindsey would appreciate it for its folky sound. Funnily enough its sort of similar to how WATL was covered for the Visitor. I guess I would really like a IKINW cover that is more driven by the distorted guitars than the acccordion.

BTW at the moment I'm listening to the 'Out on The Road' demo from the Tusk reissue... it's better than the album version!

Yeah...Sounds like heaven. And the Gourds are VERY good with distorted guitars! But I really think this is a very good cover, alot better, imo, than WATL on the Visitor. Especially the vocals. It's the basic feel of the song that's kept alive in a very natural way, if you know what I mean....

I'll listen to out on the road today....
