A response I didn't get when I played Stevie's new stuff, let me tell you!

I'm just convinced it would do well.

I know I made a few copies for other people as well. My brother, for one, always tells me it's one of his favorite albums. Then he asks me why all of Lindsey's songs from GOS appear on SYW. I've told him GOS was never released, and the songs are more or less unfinished. But he keeps asking me "why didn't Lindsey put some new songs on SYW?" He obviously doesn't listen to me.

LOL! Me too!

Carne - be flattered people are so astonished that you're not always perfect.

As for the idea - yeah, it's great. But I seriously doubt it will happen anytime soon.

Yeah, that’s a good point. Lindsey probably still thinks that albums are complete works of art in that late ‘60s sense; that there’s supposed to be a theme running through the songs or they’re supposed to represent different sides of his personality. One of our gracious moderators put it best in another thread:

That's something else I love about his work. It truly is impressionisitic in that way. Some of the songs alone may show a flash of something that can sometimes be nebulous, but when taken with the whole album, a portrait emerges.
He may use a stray song here and there (the National Lampoon ones, “Time Bomb Town”, “On The Wrong Side”, “Bleed To Love Her”, “My Little Demon”, even the limited releases of “Peacekeeper” and “Someone’s Gotta Change Your Mind”) but he still seems to care about the album format the most. Make him offer an entire album as Bit Torrent, with all the artwork coming along with it for us to print and it’s fine. Or maybe he just wants to keep it concrete, something that he can hold in his hand.

Yeah, but they also know it’s Lindsey Buckingham they’re dealing with.

All in all, I'm not so sure that staying with Warners was the best move for the band…
It’s the money again. Warners offered FM a bigger advance sum than Interscope did. And I’m not too sure if there’s the necessary skills to market LB’s work to the people that might be interested in it anywhere. Can you imagine ads of the same album in magazines with different target groups?

Whether it’s the attitude of the times or Lindsey’s refusal (or failure to see the changes in some areas) to adjust to them, is not known. I’d like him to be on smaller label, sure, but then he wouldn’t get to pocket all the cash from touring with FM and still pull out the tortured artist behaviour and still get away with it in my eyes. I’m sure he enjoys all that perversity.

I'm not a big fan of the idea that he should just throw out songs here and there. I may be old fashioned like LB, but I like albums. I like holding them in my hand, reading the liner notes, looking at the cover, all that stuff. Something gets lost with the whole dowloading thing, IMHO (although the convenience and accessibility of it is very compelling).

However, with that being said, LB needs to quit holding on to his stuff for so long. I can't tell you how disappointed I was throughout the mid-90's when I'd see release dates for GOS, and then have it be delayed or canceled. I know a lot of it was record company-related, but at a certain point you just have to say, "Here it is. If people like it, great. If they don't, it's the best I could do at that time." Lindsey, I love you man, but you don't have to obsess over every song for years on end. You didn't do that with Rumours and Tusk, why do it now?

While I would love to hear Lindsey's music I am not a big of fan of downloading songs. Yes I am an old fart. I also like to have photos, liner notes, etc. along with an actually CD.
I would rather just buy a friggin CD instead of waiting to hear a song a week. I don't like to wait. I just find downloading so impersonal.

I don't think he necessarily obsesses that much over them. If GOS was completed in 1998 and the tracks remained largely unchanged for SYW then there obviously were other issues involved. Feel free to imagine what they might be.

Thinking about it, what was stopping him releasing the songs he did for GOS on his own. If Warner's were not interested and he didn't have a deal with them - why not release it himself ??

People release music independently all the time, he's got the money to do it - so what's stopping him ?

I think its two things:

First - I think he does care about the money and fame associated with it. I think he saw FM as an avenue to acheive that. I do not balme him here or view that as a sellout. He is in business to make money to support his family in their lifestyle and there is nothing wrong with that IMO

Second - I think the main reason is he really wanted to work with FM mainly because he sought reconciliation with La Nicks. I mean he goes into this on the DR doc. when he starts crying (literally) when he is saying he hope she realized and noticed how thrilled he was and how great it is that he and La Nicks can work together and the same thing, perhaps to a lesser extent IMO, for FM. I think he saw and sees this last record as a closure type thing. LB is VERY emotionally complex and La Nicks is part of that forever IMO.

Just my $0.02

No, we all have tax and mortgages to pay, I don't have any issue with him wanting the best for his family - it's what we all strive for.

Does LB somehow look to Stevie for his success now...? Or is that heresy on this board

I di dnot say THAT above, but i suppose amongst some it probably is

I think he was just looking forward to working with her again becuase he likes her, they have a long history together, he thinks she is talented, etc.

But, others differ, etc.

Jason ITA. Maybe he fears that releasing solo stuff now would make it look like he was putting FM aside again? Which would be tragic considering how much the band (especially Liddy and La Nicks) have gone through to get to this point where they can work together on a functioning level again. On that note, I do think we'll see another FM album before Liddy releases a solo album, or perhaps, even better, we'll see some of those GOS songs that didn't make it to SYW get reworked a bit and released on a new FM album? (although I'm sure this would upset many of you here... so please don't stone me for that!) I guess I am in the school of thought that I'd rather hear all the GOS stuff released in finished form with FM than not at all!
