Ellen Burstyn (she can do no wrong...ahem, "Requiem for a Dream")
Madeline Kahn (

I thought she was her best in "Clue")
Susan Sarandon (Atlantic City, White Palace, and Dead Man Walking especially)
Jessica Lange (Music Box is one of her best)
Sigourney Weaver (never made a movie I didn't like)
Holly Hunter (she can really do no wrong; she is truly gifted and one of the best in history)
Catherine Deneuve (so, so sexy)
Lesley Ann Warren (there's just something about her that I really love)
Jodie Foster (spellbinding is the only word that could describe her!)
Cate Blanchett (totally awesome, she made some GREAT movie last year)
Helen Mirren (what a class act)

I'm sure I'll think of many, many more!

She was beautiful and I always thought that she looked like she could be Margot Kidder's sister.

Harold and Maude is one of the best movies ever made!!!!

And you *really* need to rent yourself some Holly Hunter. If I was to recommend some, I'd go for these:

Miss Firecracker (you'll die laughing!)
The Positively True Adventures of the Texas Cheerleader Murdering Mom (oh...my...gah)
Living Out Loud (she's gorgeous in this movie!)
Raising Arizona
The Piano
Thirteen
Levity

She's amazing.

I liked Holly Hunter in Always... and total contrast in Copycat (which also had the wonderful Sigourney!

I can't believe I forgot Shirley MacLaine... she is fabulous!

I have a few favourites:

Bette Davis: (esp. in What Ever Happened To Baby Jane is an all time fave)

Joan Crawford: (probably moreso than Bette. I loved her in WEHTBJ, Queen Bee and Strait-Jacket)

Kathleen Turner: That voice! Great in War Of The Roses and Serial Mom

Sigourney Weaver: I love anything she's in esp. the Alien series, Gorillas In The Mist and Working Girl

and for some reason Melanie Griffith: I think she looks pretty weird nowadays but I really enjoy her acting. I thought she was great in Working Girl.

Finally I'd add in her mother Tippi Hedren. When I was a kid she was one of my first crushes after seeing The Birds on TV. I think she was underrated in Marnie. Even though I wouldn't call her a great actress, her turns in those two Hitchcock movies made her a favourite of mine.

As you said, Melanie is Tippi's daughter. When she visited her mom on a movie set (The Birds?), Hitchcock told little Melanie he had a present for her. It was a doll that was made to look like Tippi and it was in a small coffin. Tippi was furious with Hitchcock after that. Melanie talked about this incident in the 1980s and the interview is quoted in some book I own.
