I always thought that for the longest time too. But it's really Lindsey using some kind of voice manipulation. I believe he's been doing that kind of thing since Tusk actually.

The machine is called a VSO (variable speed oscillator - I believe). It allows you to speed up or slow down a vocal track so that your voice sounds higher or lower respectively.

I always wondered why felt the need to do the female parts himself. It's not like there was no one in the band who could do it for him. There's something a little disturbing, if you ask me, about his desire to sound like he's having sex with himself, lol.

I think he wanted people to think it was Stevie.
Remember Letterman playing it? He was always making jokes about "Stevie's love grunts." |

I agree. Although LB loves to play with it by himself, he did say Stevie was not around alot to help him out - So, maybe he wanted her there while he was grunting, but that is why he is making his own love grunts

I'm sure this would be next to impossible to locate, but I remember when "Big Love" was out as a single, I read a little blurb in People magazine about "who does the love grunts?" It might have been written in response to David Letterman's on-going joke. Anyway, the blurb "revealed" that it was Cheri Caspari, Lindsey Buckingham's girlfriend. And someone is quoted (maybe it was Lindsey himself--but I doubt it) as saying that she was a little embarrassed about it. Then of course we all find out later that it was Lindsey the whole time. I never forgot that snippet because at the time (I was 17) I was jealous as hell of this "Cheri" woman!!! ![]()

I don't have the People blurb, but I do have a 1987 interview with Laura Gross in which Lindsey acknowledged that the grunts were attributed to Cheri in an article, but that it wasn't untrue.
"That's what has been printed, but as we know you can't believe everything you read," he said. He didn't say it in this interview with Gross, but he did say somewhere else that Cheri was not thrilled that she was named as being on the track. ![]()
