But, I think that is why the teacher matters so much. I mean I have seen people embarrassed to the point of tears in Math To me - high school should be all about teaching as many different thigs as possible and studies do show that socialization is taught in PE. I do agree however, that if the schools cannot teach the basics and teach PE - then PE should go

Teaching the basics is very trendy right now, but there are some interesting and charmingly ineffective methods being shoved down some teachers' throats.

Mrs. Clapp was OVERSEXED. That's all she thought about, I swear. There was one class where she was discussing female condoms and went into this diatribe about how they were uncomfortable for girls...Then one time she started class off by saying "Protect yourselves! I remember my seventh grade English teacher talking about audiences at Shakespeare's globe, how restless they were, and how the tradition of intermissions became popular. He brought up smoking and said, "You'd be surprised, some of us folks can't go a few hours without a good butt in our faces." I'll never forget the roar of laughter when his words slipped out like that.

I used to work under a principal who would argue that homework was for assessment rather than for practice.

No, but he usually just sits there eating donuts and having a couple coffees while we go play. On occasion he will actually teach though.
