Here's a look at a slew of economic data released today:

http://www.lioninc.com/L/lion_market_commentary1

Treasuries are up slightly as the economic news released this morning was weaker than expected -- a plus for the market since it diminishes the case for a Fed interest rate hike. Stocks are slightly lower in early trading.

The Labor Department reported that the seasonally adjusted level of initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose by 6,000 last week to 363,000, its highest level in two months. The four-week moving average, which smoothes out some of the short-term volatility, rose by 5,000 to 350,500. The increases of the last two weeks has renewed speculation that progress in the employment situation has hit a snag. The increase in claims is a corroboration of the weaker than predicted job growth revealed in last Friday's employment report for January.

Not all of the claims news was bad. Continuing claims for the week of January 31 (continuing claims must be at least a week old) fell by 23,000 to 3.083 million, the lowest level since July of 2001.

But the bond market found additional support this morning when the Commerce Department reported that retail and food service sales fell by 0.3% in January, a weaker figure than the flat (0.0%) reading or slight gain that forecasters were predicting. However, excluding the large but volatile category of autos and parts, sales were up by a stronger than expected 0.9% for the month. Analysts had predicted an increase of about 0.4% or 0.5%. Sales for autos and parts fell by 3.9% last month.

Data revisions resulted in a 0.2% increase in December instead of the originally reported increase of 0.5%, but ex-auto sales rose by 0.2% instead of the originally reported 0.1%.

Today's report showed that the rise in oil prices translated into a 1.7% increase in sales at gas stations. But other categories also showed gains. Among them, sales at clothing stores rose 2.9%, food and beverage stores saw a 1.8% increase while food service and drinking places saw a 1.1% rise. But furniture and home furnishing stores saw a 0.9% drop in sales, as did building material / garden equipment & supplies dealers.

The other economic release this morning was bullish, but the information is somewhat dated and it has not had a significant impact on the markets. The Commerce Department said that business inventories rose by 0.3% in December following a 0.4% increase in November (originally reported as 0.3%). Sales remained firm, rising by 0.9% for the month and 7.0% on a year-to-year basis. The inventory-to-sales ratio, a measure of inventory leanness, dropped to a record low 1.34 in December. This means that at December's sales pace, the remaining inventory would be entirely depleted in 1.34 months. The figures suggest that the rising demand will require quick replacement as there is little excess to fall back on.

I agree with Carne as well. Also, the current immigration plan is an example of importing the slave labor to the jobs as opposed to exporting the jobs to the slave labor ALl I can say about the immigration plan is W once again could have made this great, but he instead put forth this atrocity

But unfortunately, most economists think it's bull****. The White House has even reprimanded their own economists for saying that Greenspan's assertion was horse****.

Last I heard, there were only around 200,000 jobs created, not half of a million.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. I think that's the motto of the Shrub administration.

Who honestly gives a **** about what they could have done? Personally, i'm more concerned with the garbage they have done.
