Rhino Reissuing Classic Fleetwood Mac Sets

As tipped here in December, Rhino will roll out expanded reissues of three classic Fleetwood Mac albums on March 23. The sets -- 1975's self-titled album, 1977's "Rumours" and 1979's "Tusk" -- established the Mac as one of the most popular bands in the world. "Rumours" is the sixth-best selling album of all time according to the Recording Industry Association of America, which has certified it for U.S. shipments of 19 million copies.

"Fleetwood Mac" was the first album to feature vocalist Stevie Nicks and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. The pair made an immediate impact on the group's sound, best heard on such evergreens as "Landslide" and "Rhiannon." The expanded edition features single versions of the latter cut, "Say You Love Me," "Blue Letter" and "Over My Head."

By the time of "Rumours," the group's members had become famously entangled in romance and drug-fueled excess, but these travails manifested themselves into such rock radio hits as "The Chain," "You Make Loving Fun," "Dreams," "Go Your Own Way" and "Don't Stop." Although details are scant, the new version will include a second disc of 18 previously unreleased tracks, such as demos for "Gold Dust Woman" and "Never Going Back."

The double-album "Tusk" found Fleetwood Mac combating the pressure to follow-up the massive success of "Rumours" by balancing radio-ready fodder ("Sara," "Save Me the Place") with unusually experimental material (the title cut, featuring a marching band). A second disc of 21 previously unreleased demos and outtakes has been appended to the reissue.

Fleetwood Mac begins an Australian leg of its highly successful reunion tour Feb. 16 in Newcastle, Australia. The trek ends March 7 in Sydney.

This guy calls "Save Me a Place" radio fodder!? What the hell has he been drinking?

Let's put this in perspective. It's 1979 and "Save Me a Place" comes on the radio. You're the average listener. You go, "Uh!? I wonder what's on at 98.2."

yeah - it's frustrating when articles are written by non-fans and writers who don't do any fact-checking.

Save Me "The" Place is one of my favorite songs by Lindsey and one of my favorite on Tusk. I love how raw and demo-esque it is. I've also always loved how utterly non-commercial it is and how it would never make it onto Top 40 radio. This track is an example of the essence of Tusk - the band finally took some huge risks - and ended up with their greatest album. When I saw the band in New York in 1979, they did this and Stevie's harmony was so gorgeous with Lindsey's lead vocal.

Yep. The average music listener likes safe music...music that doesn't sound weird or unusual...GOD FORBID!!

I'm always fascinated at how someone who is 12 can connect with FM and people who've followed them since the beginning also connect.

Actually, to put "Save Me a Place," which is a good song, up with the likes of the brilliant "Sara" is a compliment

Timeless....

I was 13 when 'The Dance' came out, and I made a stong connection with the Mac's music and ever since then... so... does that make me a genious?

I'm thinking that Jonathan Cohen was probably having a hard time coming up with a "radio-ready" song of Lindsey's, in comparison to the offbeat "Tusk," so he just went with one of Lindsey's least discordant tracks.
How ever "experimental" it may or may not be.

But he should have just mentioned one of Christine's songs, and saved himself the trouble!

Also, I gotta say that to me Stevie was just resplendent in this era. IMO all three were great (and still are), but to me Stevie really just came into her own and IMO has never been this way again. I mean I like her now and before and since, but this era was just complete and total magic for her despite the throat probems during the tour, etc.

Again, I love the rest of the band and think all three are stellar. But this was Stevie's time for me, which is sort of sad because to me Tusk was all about the complete and total 100% genius of LB and then Stevie goes super nova

Oh - FM - the saga continues today

It was TOTALLY Stevie's great songwriting era. Every song of hers on Tusk is brilliance. Beautiful Child ALONE for me is just...WOW!! Tusk is my fave grouping of Stevie songs.

I think he did a good job with this article. Somehow he didn't realise that Tusk was obviously geared for radio (shocking radio, but radio nontheless) and that SMAP was surely geared as an album song, but he isn't questioning whether they're good or not.

Save Me The Place <----- I wonder if he has this mixed up with Save Me??? Now there's your radio fodder.
